Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Hopf bifurcation control for a coupled nonlinear relative rotation system with time-delay feedbacks

This paper investigates the Hopf bifurcations resulting from time delay in a coupled relative-rotation system with time- delay feedbacks. Firstly, considering external excitation, the dynamical equation of relative rotation nonlinear dynamical system with primary resonance and 1：1 internal resonance under time-delay feedbacks is deduced. Secondly, the averaging equation is obtained by the multiple scales method. The periodic solution in a closed form is presented by a perturbation approach. At last, numerical simulations confirm that time-delay theoretical analyses have influence on the Hopf bifurcation point and the stability of periodic solution.

Hopf bifurcation and chaos of a nonlinear electromechanical coupling relative rotation system are studied in this paper. Considering the energy in air-gap field of AC motor, the dynamical equation of nonlinear electromechanical coupling relative rotation system is deduced by using the dissipation Lagrange equation. Choosing the electromagnetic stiffness as a bifurcation parameter, the necessary and sufficient conditions of Hopf bifurcation are given, and the bifurcation characteristics are studied. The mechanism and conditions of system parameters for chaotic motions are investigated rigorously based on the Silnikov method, and the homoclinic orbit is found by using the undetermined coefficient method. Therefore, Smale horseshoe chaos occurs when electromagnetic stiffness changes. Numerical simulations are also given, which confirm the analytical results.

Maximum consensus is useful in many applications such as leader selection and time synchronization, and it is advantageous for its decentralization and finite time convergence. However, without preservation mechanisms for maximum consensus, nodes' initial states and especially the identity of the node with the maximum initial state will be disclosed, which is undesirable in some application scenarios. To preserve the privacy of maximum consensus while maintaining its advantages, we propose a Privacy Preserving Maximum Consensus (PPMC) algorithm, where all nodes independently generate and transmit random numbers before sending out their initial states. We prove that PPMC converges in finite time. Meanwhile, explicit formulas are given to characterize the probability that the maximum state owner's identity is inferred by its neighbors. Extensive simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

The finite-time neural network adaptive control of under-actuated robot is investigated, and a kind of multistep control strategy is used. First the transformation of dynamics model is made, and the passive joints are driven to desire positions by the coupling among joints, then the passive joints are locked. When the passive joints are locked to other operating point, the system becomes the one with structure uncertain. Combining the theory of finite-time control with neural network adaptive control, a finite-time neural network adaptive controller is got which can make the position tracking of joint rapidly. The simulation shows the effectiveness of the controller. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Energy-aware routing for delay-sensitive underwater wireless sensor networks

The energy reduction is a challenging problem in the applications of underwater wireless sensor networks(UWSNs). The embedded battery is difficult to be replaced and it has an upper bound on its *** relay is a popular method to reduce energy consumption in data transmission. The energy minimum path from source to destination in the sensor networks can be obtained through the shortest path ***, because of the node mobility, the global path planning approach is not suitable for the routing in UWSNs. It calls for an energy-efficient routing protocol for the high dynamic UWSNs. In this paper, we propose the modified energy weight routing(MEWR) protocol to deal with the energy-efficient routing of delaysensitive UWSNs. MEWR is a low flooding routing protocol. It can tolerate the node mobility in UWSNs and achieve a low end-to-end packet delay. MEWR can provide lower energy consumption than the existing low delay routing protocols through the dynamic sending power adjustment. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of MEWR.

Linear active disturbance rejection control(LADRC) is used to control the fuel processing system(FPS) of fuel cells. Two LADRC schemes(with and without decoupler) are studied. LADRCs with decouplers are designed at three operating points. Step responses and Monte Carlo experiments show that good dynamic performance and strong robustness can be achieved. The result is further verified with bode plots of the closed-loop sys tems. Inspired by this result, LADRCs without decouplers are analyzed. Simulations show that a single decentralized ADRC can be enough to control three different models with satisfactory dynamic performance and good decoupling performance.

An equalization algorithm based on constellation matched phase error for M-ary phase shift keying signals

The inter-symbol interference (ISI) and phase error caused by non-ideal character of channel can result in severe degradation of bit error rate performance in communication system. The existing equalization algorithm can effectively eliminate the ISI of M-ary phase shift keying signals (MPSK), but do not inhibit the phase error. A new equalization algorithm that accomplishes blind equalization and phase information recovery simultaneously is proposed for MPSK signals. In the algorithm, the cost function is weighted sum of two separate well-defined terms: one is identical to the constant modulus algorithm case to enhance the robust of the algorithm, and another is a constellation matched phase error (CMPE) term that is constructed in this paper. The CMPE term is used to cancel the phase error of the equalizer output. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is effective in removing ISI and correcting phase error at the same time. © 2014 Binary Information Press.
