Robust mean-variance optimization for self-scheduling of thermal producer and its price of robustness

In deregulated electricity markets, generation companies with the aim of maximum revenue need to provide trading strategies to the electricity trading market, which contributed to a self-scheduling model. When considering the uncertainty of price, the trading strategies are required to maximize the revenue as well as minimizing the risks brought by uncertainties. In this paper, a multi-objective robust mean-variance model was proposed to solve the above problem and the Pareto frontier of the multi-objective optimization was obtained. Moreover, the proposed robust mean-variance model could be equivalently transformed into a non-robust mean-variance model which was casted as a second-order cone programming (SOCP) optimization. The price of robustness to benefits, risks, and the Pareto frontier were analyzed. Finally, the robust mean-variance model based self-scheduling model optimization and its budget of robustness were tested on a 30-bus system. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and analysis. © 2015 Chin. Soc. for Elec. Eng.

This paper improves on a noted square-root RTS Kalman smoothing algorithm proposed by Park and Kailath for the application purpose. This improved square-root RTS algorithm is able to additionally accommodate arbitrary exogenous known input, as such case is quite common in the real-world applications. In addition, hyperbolic Householder transformations are employed to avoid the computation of the difference of two positive semi-definite matrices. The Givens rotations based unitary transformations are further used to make the resulting algorithm have higher computational efficiency. The relevant implementation steps of this algorithm is also addressed. Finally, a numerical simulation is given to verify this improved algorithm.

Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) are becoming increasingly popular because of the environmental and economic benefits. However, high penetration of PEVs may overload the distribution network. In this paper, we propose a decentralized PWM-based algorithm to coordinate PEV charging. We first formulate the PEVs charging coordination problem as an optimization problem, with the objective to flatten the total demand curve as much as possible. Then, we design the control algorithm in two stages. In the first stage, we adopt the the water-filling-based algorithm proposed in our previous study, assuming the charging rate of PEVs takes a continuous value. In the second stage, the assumption is dropped by utilizing the pulse-width modulation (PWM) principle. The moving horizon idea is also introduced to alleviate the errors due to inaccurate forecast and quantization, as well as to tackle the random arrival time of PEVs. Moreover, each PEV only needs to calculate its own power allocation, and hence its implementation requires low computational capacity. Numerical simulations are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm.

This paper studies the formation control problem for a leader-follower network in 3D. The objective is to control the agents to form a globally rigid formation, for which the sensing graph is directed and switching while the communication graph is undirected and switching. Under such a setup, a barycentric coordinate based approach is proposed for the design of formation control laws ensuring global convergence. A necessary and sufficient graphical condition is obtained to guarantee that the followers converge to form a globally rigid formation together with the leaders. By this approach, the formation of the whole group, namely, the orientation, translation and formation scale, can be reconfigured by the leaders.

In this paper, we study the flow-level performance of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM)-based cellular network with underlay D2D, where the uplink cellular spectrum is shared by the cellular and D2D users. In specific, we formulate a coupled processor queuing system with two types of queues to model the flow-level system behavior, where the service rates are derived based on the stochastic point processes of user positions. Since the state space of the queuing model grows exponentially with the number of D2D users and cells, we use the model decomposition and iteration technique to derive its approximate steady-state solution and obtain the flow-level performance in terms of mean delay and energy consumption. Simulations are performed to verify the analytical results under different traffic loads. The proposed flow-level performance model has practical implications for the network deployment and parameter tuning with regard to D2D communications.

In order to distinguish and diagnose aircraft accident through cockpit voices, especial the background sounds, three methods are systematically described and applied in this paper from actual cockpit voices recorded by Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). Firstly, using listening and distinguishing cockpit voices based on Cockpit Voice Decoding System (CVDS), some typical background sounds are obtained and classified. Then, some time-frequency analysis methods are used to extract the characteristics of these sounds. Through these methods, some typical background sounds' special characteristics about frequency value, spectral density, frequency line numbers are depurated. Thirdly, the fault trees methods of one main information fusion are obtained. The researches provide the scientific evidence to protect the flight security. In this paper, the envelope-constrained H∗ filtering problem is investigated for a class of discrete time-varying stochastic systems over a finite horizon. The system under consideration involves fading measurements, randomly occurring nonlinearities (RONs) and mixed (multiplicative and additive) noises. A novel envelope-constrained performance criterion is proposed to better quantify the transient dynamics of the filtering error process over the finite horizon. The purpose of the problem addressed is to design a time-varying filter such that both the H∗ performance and the desired envelope constraints are achieved at each time step. By utilizing the stochastic analysis techniques combined with the ellipsoid description on the estimation errors, sufficient conditions are established in the form of recursive matrix inequalities (RMIs) reflecting both the envelope information and the desired H∗ performance index. The filter gain matrix is characterized by means of the solvability of the deduced RMIs. Finally, a simulation example is provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed filtering design scheme. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Robot force control is an essential issue in robotic intelligence. There is much high uncertainty when robot end-effector contacts with the environment. Because of the environment stiffness effects on the system of the robot end-effector contact with environment, the adaptive generalized predictive control algorithm based on quantitative feedback theory is designed for robot end-point contact force system. The controller of the internal loop is designed on the foundation of QFT to control the uncertainty of the system. An adaptive GPC algorithm is used to design external loop controller to improve the performance and the robustness of the system. Two closed loops used in the design approach realize the systems performance and improve the robustness. The simulation results show that the algorithm of the robot end-effector contacting force control system is effective. © 2014 ISA. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this study we modified the local binary pattern operator (LBP) to obtain the robust invariant texture patterns for image texture classification. The modified method will be able to calculate patterns which are invariant for translation, scaling, rotation and reflection. Therefore, the modified LBP is called R-LBP. Although many variation of LBP have been proposed, most of them cannot detect and recognize the patterns of reflection. Both clockwise and counter clockwise coding is used in the proposed R-LBP operator in order to derive a minimum code to representing the pattern. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective in determining the invariant patterns for image texture classification. © 2015 ACM.
