Inexact proximal gradient algorithm with random reshuffling for nonsmooth optimization

Proximal gradient algorithms are popularly implemented to achieve convex optimization with nonsmooth regularization. Obtaining the exact solution of the proximal operator for nonsmooth regularization is challenging because errors exist in the computation of the gradient; consequently, the design and application of inexact proximal gradient algorithms have attracted considerable attention from researchers. This paper proposes computationally efficient basic and inexact proximal gradient descent algorithms with random reshuffling. The proposed stochastic algorithms take randomly reshuffled data to perform successive gradient descents and implement only one proximal operator after all data pass through. We prove the convergence results of the proposed proximal gradient algorithms under the sampling-without-replacement reshuffling *** computational errors exist in gradients and proximal operations, the proposed inexact proximal gradient algorithms can converge to an optimal solution neighborhood. Finally, we apply the proposed algorithms to compressed sensing and compare their efficiency with some popular algorithms.

A Unified Framework for Analysis and Optimization of RIS-Assisted MIMO Multiple Access Networks

Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are gaining increasing attention in communication systems due to their ability to adapt themself according to the wireless environment. Therefore, the communication systems with massive RIS deployments are able to extend high-quality coverage ubiquitously. This is especially beneficial for Internet of Things (IoT) systems as the IoT devices can be located in hard-to-reach area. On the other hand, current methods to analyze and optimize the performance of communication systems with multiple RISs deployment are ad hoc, which depends on the specific system configurations. There lacks a unified theoretical framework that provides general analytical treatment for both passive and active RIS-assisting systems, possibly having multiple concatenated reflections via RISs, which is typical in IoT communication scenarios. Thus, we investigate general uplink RIS-assisted multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) communication systems under general Rician fading channels, where the number of cascaded RIS panels are arbitrary and the RIS elements can be active or passive. By utilizing the linearization trick and the operator-valued free probability theory, a unified analytic expression of the ergodic sum rate for the considered MU-MIMO systems is derived. Then, we further propose a low-complexity optimization approach to design the RISs’ phase shifts, thus enhancing the ergodic sum rate. Numerical results verify the accuracy of the analytical results for RIS-assisted systems. In addition, the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed optimization algorithm are demonstrated. © 2014 IEEE.

Aiming at the problems of short duration,low intensity,and difficult detection of micro-expressions(MEs),the global and local features of ME video frames are extracted by combining spatial feature extraction and temporal feature *** on traditional convolution neural network(CNN)and long short-term memory(LSTM),a recognition method combining global identification attention network(GIA),block identification attention network(BIA)and bi-directional long short-term memory(Bi-LSTM)is *** the BIA,the ME video frame will be cropped,and the training will be carried out by cropping into 24 identification blocks(IBs),10 IBs and uncropped *** alleviate the overfitting problem in training,we first extract the basic features of the preprocessed sequence through the transfer learning layer,and then extract the global and local spatial features of the output data through the GIA layer and the BIA layer,*** the BIA layer,the input data will be cropped into local feature vectors with attention weights to extract the local features of the ME frames;in the GIA layer,the global features of the ME frames will be ***,after fusing the global and local feature vectors,the ME time-series information is extracted by *** experimental results show that using IBs can significantly improve the model’s ability to extract subtle facial features,and the model works best when 10 IBs are used.

In long-Term target tracking, target occlusion is an important factor that affects the performance of the tracker, and it is also an inevitable problem in long-Term target tracking. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt corresponding strategies for target occlusion to improve the robustness of the tracker in corresponding scenarios. In response to the problem of target loss in complex background scenarios such as target occlusion in current filtering based tracking algorithms, this paper studies the use of masking strategies and adaptive response fusion methods to improve the accuracy and robustness of tracking *** experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of various strategies in resisting occlusion in tracking algorithms. Selecting the appropriate matching area is one of the crucial tasks in scene matching systems, serving as the basis for trajectory planning. Currently, there are two main approaches for adaptation zone selection: Traditional statistical feature-based adaptation zone selection methods and deep learning-based adaptation zone selection methods. The former relies on multi-Threshold screening to choose adaptation zones, resulting in a complex and less accurate process. The latter employs model training to select adaptation zones, improving accuracy, but it tends to yield less stable results. Therefore, this paper utilizes the *** network to extract keypoints and their feature descriptors within the scene region as the initial feature set. It employs support vector regression as the matching probability prediction model and uses threshold segmentation on the predicted probabilities to ultimately determine the adaptability of the region. Experimental results demonstrate that the adaptation zone selection method proposed in this paper offers higher accuracy and stability. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. When estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) of wideband signals from multiple sources, the performance of sparse Bayesian methods is influenced by the frequency bands occupied by signals in different directions. This is particularly true when multiple signal frequency bands overlap. Message passing algorithms (MPA) with Dirichlet process (DP) prior can be employed in a sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) framework with high precision. However, existing methods suffer from either high complexity or low precision. To address this, we propose a low-complexity DOA estimation algorithm based on a factor graph. This approach introduces two strong constraints via a stretching transformation of the factor graph. The first constraint separates the observation from the DP prior, enabling the application of the unitary approximate message passing (UAMP) algorithm for simplified inference and mitigation of divergence issues. The second constraint compensates for the deviation in estimation angle caused by the grid mismatch problem. Compared to state-of-the-art algorithms, our proposed method offers higher estimation accuracy and lower complexity.

Action Status Based Novel Relative Feature Representations for Interaction Recognition

Skeleton-based action recognition has always been an important research topic in computer vision. Most of the researchers in this field currently pay more attention to actions performed by a single person while there is very little work dedicated to the identification of interactions between two people. However, the practical application of interaction recognition is actually more critical in our society considering that actions are often performed by multiple people. How to design an effective scheme to learn discriminative spatial and temporal representations for skeleton-based interaction recognition is still a challenging problem. Focusing on the characteristics of skeleton data for interactions, we first define the moving distance to distinguish the action status of the participants. Then some view-invariant relative features are proposed to fully represent the spatial and temporal relationship of the skeleton sequence. Further, a new coding method is proposed to obtain the novel relative feature representations. Finally, we design a three-stream CNN model to learn deep features for interaction recognition. We evaluate our method on SBU dataset, NTU RGB+D 60 dataset and NTU RGB+D 120 dataset. The experimental results also verify that our method is effective and exhibits great robustness compared with current state-of-the-art methods.

Gaining Technological Autonomy and Social-emotional Support: A Case Study of How and Why Chinese Older Adults Engage with a Semi-acquaintance Online Community

Older adults are often underserved and marginalized in technology engagement due to their reluctance and the barriers they face in adopting and engaging with mainstream technology. However, Pinxiaoquan, a social feature of an e-commerce platform in China, has gained a large number of older users. This work investigates how and why Chinese older adults use Pinxiaoquan, aiming to unveil the underlying logic and inspire technology-inclusive design for older adults. To this end, we conducted a mixed-methods qualitative study over two years, which included online observation, and semi-interview. We found that Pinxiaoquan’s success among Chinese older adults is mainly due to its ability to inspire technological autonomy and provide social-emotional support. Rather than simply lowering technical barriers or asking them to seek assistance outside the platform, Pinxiaoquan builds a semi-acquaintance online community based on location and social ties that allows older adults to realize technical support mutually. Pinxiaoquan also fulfills their social-emotional needs, such as free online expression, memory creation and preservation, relationship expansion and maintenance, and a sense of value. Our research contributes to the HCI community by highlighting the importance of improving older adults’ technology autonomy following their specific social and cultural background and social-emotional needs. This work also provides unique insights and implications for building inclusive technology for the growing aging population. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

The Gaussian homotopy method is a classical optimization approach for solving nonconvex problems. It applies Gaussian smoothing to a given problem, using varying smoothing factors to generate a series of proxy problems that are easier to solve, subsequently addressing them gradually from simpler to more complex ones. Traditional Gaussian homotopy methods typically utilize a predefined sequence or parameter to update a single smoothing factor serially. However, this sequential updating process is inefficient and unsuitable for parallel homotopy pipelines. Moreover, the utilization of predefined sequences or parameters leads to a lack of adaptability. To address the abovementioned challenges, we propose an adaptive parallel Gaussian homotopy optimization method. Initially, we introduce an adaptive model called Scaling. This model is formulated as a scaler that concurrently adjusts multiple smoothing factors, with each factor aligning to a homotopy level. It can be integrated easily into serial and parallel homotopy pipelines. Furthermore, we establish a collaborative training regimen to jointly train the Scaling model and a parallel homotopy model, named continuation path learning (CPL) [1] model. Throughout the training process, the Scaling model furnishes CPL with multiple scaled smoothing factors and updates CPL implicitly. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed Gaussian homotopy approach performs competitively. © 2024 IEEE.

The Inner Product Masking(IPM)scheme has been shown to provide higher theoretical security guarantees than the BooleanMasking(BM).This scheme aims to increase the algebraic complexity of the coding to achieve a higher level of *** previous work unfolds when certain(adversarial and implementation)conditions are met,and we seek to complement these investigations by understanding what happens when these conditions deviate from their expected *** this paper,we investigate the security characteristics of IPM under different *** adversarial condition,the security properties of first-order IPMs obtained through parametric characterization are preserved in the face of univariate and bivariate *** implementation condition,we construct two new polynomial leakage functions to observe the nonlinear leakage of the IPM and connect the security order amplification to the nonlinear *** observe that the security of IPMis affected by the degree and the linear component in the leakage *** addition,the comparison experiments from the coefficients,signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)and the public parameter show that the security properties of the IPM are highly implementation-dependent.
