Active contours have been one of the most successful methods for image segmentation during the last two decades, but one of the shortcomings of being unable to converge to concavity is a handicap to its effectiveness. In order to address this issue, the gradient vector flow (GVF) was put forth. Although there have been a great number of works on GVF, the image structure has seldom been incorporated into GVF algorithm. In this work, the image structure characterized by the Hessian matrix is incorporated into the GVF algorithm by reformulating the smoothness constraint of GVF into matrix form. In this way, the associated diffusion PDEs are anisotropic and the modified GVF snake can converge to very long concavity and preserve weak edge simultaneously. Experiments and comparisons are presented to demonstrate the properties of the proposed strategies.

Context-awareness is an essential feature of pervasive applications, and runtime detection of contextual properties is one of the primary approaches to enabling context awareness. However, existing context-aware middleware does not provide sufficient support for detection of contextual properties in asynchronous environments. We argue that in asynchronous environments, the concept of time needs to be reexamined. Instead of assuming the availability of global time or synchronous interaction, we should rely on logical time. To this end, we present the Middleware Infrastructure for Predicate detection in Asynchronous environments (MIPA), which supports context-awareness based on logical time. Design and operation of MIPA are explained in detail. We also evaluate MIPA with a comprehensive case study. The evaluation results show the cost-effectiveness and scalability of MIPA.

A method was presented to implement the detecting and tracking of moving targets through omnidirec-tional vision. The method combined optical flow with particle filter arithmetic, in which optical flow field was used to detect and locate moving targets and particle filter was used to track the detected moving objects. According to the circular image character of omnidirectional vision, the calculation equation of optical flow field and the tracking arithmetic of particle filter were improved based on the polar coordinates at the omnidirectional center. The edge of a randomly moving object could be detected by optical flow field and was surrounded by a reference region in the particle filter. A dynamic motion model was established to predict particle state. Histograms were used as the fea-tures in the reference region and candidate regions. The mutual information (MI) and Gaussian function were com-bined to calculate particle weights. Finally, the state of tracked object was computed by the total particle states with weights. Experiment results show that the proposed method could detect and track moving objects with better real-time performance and accuracy.
