According to defocus imaging theory, the amount of blur in the defocus images varies with depth of the object in the scene. So depth in the scene can be recovered by estimating the blur with the knowledge of the lens parameters. A novel application of the total variation principle is made for the estimation of the amount of blur in the defocus images. Three main processes are included: the process of image defocusing is modeled using the model of anisotropic heat diffusion, then the depth recovery problem is translated into the minimum problem of energy functional with total variation regularization, and the gradient flow is used to seek the optimal solution. The recovery of focus image and the excess restrictions are avoided. The experiment results show that the algorithm is quite effective and depth information in edge is well retained particularly. Compared with the least square algorithm, depth recovery error with the total variation algorithm is reduced about 40%.

We propose a structure called dependency forest for statistical machine translation. A dependency forest compactly represents multiple dependency trees. We develop new algorithms for extracting string-to dependency rules and training dependency language models. Our forest-based string-to-dependency system obtains significant improvements ranging from 1.36 to 1.46 BLEU points over the tree-based baseline on the NIST 2004/2005/2006 Chinese-English test sets.

As tokenization is usually ambiguous for many natural languages such as Chinese and Korean, tokenization errors might potentially introduce translation mistakes for translation systems that rely on 1-best tokenizations. While using lattices to offer more alternatives to translation systems have elegantly alleviated this problem, we take a further step to tokenize and translate jointly. Taking a sequence of atomic units that can be combined to form words in different ways as input, our joint decoder produces a tokenization on the source side and a translation on the target side simultaneously. By integrating tokenization and translation features in a discriminative framework, our joint decoder outperforms the baseline translation systems using 1-best tokenizations and lattices significantly on both Chinese- English and Korean-Chinese tasks. Interestingly, as a tokenizer, our joint decoder achieves significant improvements over monolingual Chinese tokenizers.

Ana\ysis of electromagnetic scattering characteristics from wire antennas using method of moments has been performed over the past decades. In this paper, an efficient technique is adopted to evaluate the potential and reaction integrals arising in radar cross section (RCS) computation of cylindrical antenna by method of moments. The singularity of potential and reaction integrals is extracted through the semi-analytical method. The induced current on the surface and RCS of cylindrical antenna are calculated. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the computational accuracy and efficiency of the proposed technique.
