Accurate and robust power system state estimation (PSSE) is an essential prerequisite for reliable operation of smart power grids. In contrast to the commonly employed weighted least squares (WLS) one, the least-absolute-value (LAV) estimator is well documented for its robustness. Due to the non-convexity and non-smoothness however, existing LAV implementations are typically slow, thus inadequate for real-time system monitoring. In this context, this paper puts forward a novel LAV estimator leveraging recent algorithmic advances in composite optimization. Concretely, the estimator is based on a proximal linear procedure that deals with a sequence of convex quadratic problems, each efficiently solvable by means of either standard convex optimization methods, or the alternating direction method of multipliers. Simulated tests using two IEEE benchmark networks showcase its improved robustness and computational efficiency relative to several competing alternatives.

Multi-player pursuit–evasion games with one superior evader

Inspired by the hunting and foraging behaviors of group predators, this paper addresses a class of multi-player pursuit–evasion games with one superior evader, who moves faster than the pursuers. We are concerned with the conditions under which the pursuers can capture the evader, involving the minimum number and initial spatial distribution required as well as the cooperative strategies of the pursuers. We present some necessary or sufficient conditions to regularize the encirclement formed by the pursuers to the evader. Then we provide a cooperative scheme for the pursuers to maintain and shrink the encirclement until the evader is captured. Finally, we give some examples to illustrate the theoretical results.

This paper investigates the design and detection problems of stealthy false data injection (FDI) attacks against networked control systems from the different perspectives of an attacker and a defender, respectively. First, a Kalman filter-based output tracking control system is presented, where stealthy FDI attacks are designed for its feedback and forward channels so as to destroy the system performance while bypassing a traditional residual-based detector. Second, to successfully detect such two-channel stealthy attacks, an active data modification scheme is proposed, by which the measurement and control data are amended before transmitting them through communication networks. Theoretical analysis is then carried out for both ideal and practical cases to evaluate the effectiveness of the detection scheme. An interesting finding is that the attacks designed based on a false model obtained from those modified data can remain stealthy. Finally, simulation results are provided to validate the proposed attack design and detection schemes.

We have successfully achieved manipulation and assembly of microbeads having the size of 100μm diameter by hemispherical end-effectors with high stability and accuracy. The motivation of achieving assembly of actual cells lies in the great significance of it in tissue regeneration and cell analysis. Firstly, the most difficult problem we need to solve is the releasing problem caused by adhesion force. The viscosity on cell surface is much larger than the microbeads which makes cell releasing challenging. Secondly, the cell can generate its deformation, then contact area with end-effector will change during grasping process. This may influence the adhesion force and also bring problem to releasing. Thirdly, cell is much smaller, around 15μm in diameter, so we need to fabricate smaller end-effector to achieve successful manipulation and ensure the stability in the meantime. In this paper, we realize the manipulation by decreasing the adhesion forces and apply vibration to release a cell stably. We found the appropriate scale size for the end-effector is around 10μm diameter. It can not only grasp a 15μm cell but also bring little interference to the environment. As a demonstration of the proposed manipulation method, the repeated experiments were conducted to explore the dependence of adhesion force on the grasping distance, which can be helpful in the improvement of successful rate. Finally, we achieved automatic cell assembly using Hela cells.

Micromanipulation techniques that can achieve controlled fine operations at the micro scale play an important role in biomedical fields including embryo engineering, gene engineering, drug screening, and cell analysis. However, micromanipulation of biological micro-objects, such as cells and micro tissues, suffers from mechanical damage and low efficiency. Several techniques have been introduced to manipulate cells more easily, but most of them are restricted by expensive devices, limited work area, and potential damage to cellular structure. Here we develop a hydrodynamic manipulation method to rotate and transport mouse oocytes, which utilizes acoustic waves and micropipette to generate acoustic radiation force and excite microstreaming. This method can accomplish rotational and translational operations precisely and controllably. We tested the process of trapping, rotation, and transportation of the mouse oocytes, and measured rotational and translational speed with a range of applied voltage. The method was able to shorten the cost time of delivery and posture adjustment before oocyte injection. Our study provides an easy-to-use technique for oocyte manipulation without contact, and it has the potential to be universally applied in many cellular studies.

Power system state estimation via feasible point pursuit: Algorithms and Cramér-Rao bound

Accurately monitoring the system's operating point is central to the reliable and economic operation of an electric power grid. Power system state estimation (PSSE) aims to obtain complete voltage magnitude and angle information at each bus given a number of system variables at selected buses and lines. Power flow analysis is a special case of PSSE, and amounts to solving a set of noise-free power flow equations. Physical laws dictate quadratic relationships between available quantities and unknown voltages, rendering general instances of power flow and PSSE nonconvex and NP-hard. Past approaches are largely based on gradient-type iterative procedures or semidefinite relaxation (SDR). Due to nonconvexity, the solution obtained via gradienttype schemes depends on initialization, while SDR methods do not perform as desired in challenging scenarios. This paper puts forth novel feasible point pursuit (FPP)-based solvers for power flow and PSSE, which iteratively seek feasible solutions for a nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) reformulation of the weighted least-squares (WLS) problem. Relative to the prior art, the developed solvers offer superior performance at the cost of higher complexity. Furthermore, they converge to a stationary point of the WLS problem. As a baseline for comparing different estimators, the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived for the fundamental PSSE problem in this paper. Judicious numerical tests on several IEEE benchmark systems showcase markedly improved performance of our FPPbased solvers for both power flow and PSSE tasks over popular WLS-based Gauss-Newton iterations and SDR approaches. A new approach is proposed in this paper to recover the original image of an underwater scene from a given sequence distorted by water fluctuation. The contribution of our method is to use a motion field-based kernel regression to reconstruct an undistorted image. It first utilizes the image registration method to generate registered frames and the corresponding motion fields, and then detect a set of stationary patches from registered frames by calculating the movement energy of local regions. Finally, a temporal kernel regression is carried out to combine the detected stationary patches to reconstruct an undistorted stationary image. Experiments illustrate that this approach can effectively alleviate distortions and significantly improve visual quality of the distorted images. Copyright © 2014 Binary Information Press.

Due to the advantages of large unit capacity, high efficiency and high reliability, direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) wind turbines (WTs) have been widely used in the offshore wind power generation. The power loop controller aims to maintain the DC-Bus voltage of each PMSG-WT is equal to the others, guaranteeing that multiple WTs can be connected in DC serial parallel collection. In this paper, the DC-Port sequence impedance model of the PMSG-WT is established based on the harmonic linearization method, which takes the outer power loop into consideration. The impedance model is further verified by point-by-point scanning in MATlab/Simulink. The proposed DC-Port impedance model of the PMSG-WT facilitates the establishment of offshore direct-drive wind farms, and is of great significance for analyzing and improving the system stability.

Learning Hidden Markov Models for Linear Gaussian systems with Applications to Event-based State Estimation

This work attempts to approximate a linear Gaussian system with a finite-state hidden Markov model (HMM), which is found useful in solving sophisticated event-based state estimation problems. An indirect modeling approach is developed, wherein a state space model (SSM) is firstly identified for a Gaussian system and the SSM is then used as an emulator for learning an HMM. In the proposed method, the training data for the HMM are obtained from the data generated by the SSM through building a quantization mapping. Parameter learning algorithms are designed to learn the parameters of the HMM, through exploiting the periodical structural characteristics of the HMM. The convergence and asymptotic properties of the proposed algorithms are analyzed. The HMM learned using the proposed algorithms is applied to event-triggered state estimation, and numerical results on model learning and state estimation demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithms. This paper investigates a distributed finite-time attitude synchronization and tracking problem of multiple spacecraft when a time varying reference signal is available to only a subset of group members. Modified Rodrigues parameters are used for attitude representation. A two layer sliding mode surface with fast non-singular terminal sliding mode surface (FNTSMS) as the inner layer and terminal sliding mode surface (TSMS) as the outer layer is used to create a full order sliding mode surface. The proposed distributed attitude coordination control law guarantees attitude synchronization and tracking as long as their exists atleast one spacecraft that has a direct access to the virtual leader's time varying attitude. Finite-time stability of the closed loop system is guaranteed by Lyapunov-based stability method. Simulation results are presented to validate the performance of the proposed control strategy.
