False claims that have been previously fact-checked can still spread on social media. To mitigate their continual spread, detecting previously fact-checked claims is indispensable. Given a claim, existing works retrieve fact-checking articles (FC-articles) for detection and focus on reranking candidate articles in the typical two-stage retrieval framework. However, their performance may be limited as they ignore the following characteristics of FC-articles: (1) claims are often quoted to describe the checked events, providing lexical information besides semantics;and (2) sentence templates to introduce or debunk claims are common across articles, providing pattern information. In this paper, we propose a novel reranker, MTM (Memoryenhanced Transformers for Matching), to rank FC-articles using key sentences selected using event (lexical and semantic) and pattern information. For event information, we propose to finetune the Transformer with regression of ROUGE. For pattern information, we generate pattern vectors as a memory bank to match with the parts containing patterns. By fusing event and pattern information, we select key sentences to represent an article and then predict if the article fact-checks the given claim using the claim, key sentences, and patterns. Experiments on two real-world datasets show that MTM outperforms existing methods. Human evaluation proves that MTM can capture key sentences for explanations. Emotion identification, which aims to determine a person’s affective state automatically, has immense potential value in many areas, such as action tendency, health care, psychological detection and human-computer (robot) interaction. In this paper, we propose a novel method for identifying emotion from natural walking. After obtaining the three-axis acceleration data of wrist and ankle recorded by smartphone, we run a moving average filter window with different length w, then cut actual data into slices. 114 features are extracted from each slice, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used for feature selection. We train SVM, Decision Tree, Multilayerperception, Random Tree and Random Forest classifiers, and compare the accuracy of emotion identification using different datasets (wrist vs. ankle) on different models. Results show that acceleration data from ankle has better performance in emotion identification than wrist. Among these models, SVM has the highest accuracy of 90.31 % for identifying anger vs. neutral, 89.76 % for happy vs. neutral, and 87.10 % for anger vs. happy. The model for identifying anger/neutral/happy yields the best accuracy of 85 %-78 %-78 %. The results show that we could identify people’s emotional states through the gait of walking with high accuracy. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

Knowledge Grid is a platform that enables uniform and effective knowledge sharing and management across the Internet. Based on this platform, this paper proposes a cooperative learning environment KGCL. It supports the knowledge-level cooperation between human and computer, and enables the enrichment of not only the resources in the Knowledge Grid but also the knowledge of users by means of knowledge refinement, knowledge reuse and drawing together online participants. Currently, the prototype of the KGCL has been implemented and is available for use online. Experiments show that the environment can promote the effectiveness of teamwork. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Energy consumption is an important issue in the design and use of networks. In this paper, we explore energy savings in networks via a rate adaptation model. This model can be represented by a cost-minimization network routing problem with discrete cost functions. We formulate this problem as an integer program, which is proved to be NP-hard. Then a constant approximation algorithm is developed. In our proposed method, we first transform the program into a continuous-cost network routing problem, and then we approximate the optimal solution by a two-step rounding process. We show by analysis that, for uniform demands, our method provides a constant approximation for the uniform network routing problem with discrete costs. A bicriteria network routing problem is also developed so that a trade-off can be made between energy consumption and network delay. Analytical results for this latter model are also presented. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Preventing explosion of rumors on the Internet asks for a quick automatic detection mechanism that can detect rumors according to the given true information. Previous automatic rumors detection models are mainly built by training a supervised classification model on a labeled dataset containing rumor samples and true information samples. However, in many real cases, there is only one short piece of available true information sample given by an authority in form of an explanation or a correction of a rumor. The explanation sample is often short and very similar to rumor samples, making it difficult to train a discriminative classifier to check whether a piece of information is a rumor or an explanation of rumors. It is necessary to build a model to detect whether a short text is a rumor text or an explanation of rumors, which can be used to as evidences for detecting and refuting rumors. In this paper, we presented a sentence preprocessing method that extracts the leftmost longest common sequence to obtain the common and difference subsequences between the rumor text and its explanation text to compose samples and train a supervised model for classification between rumors and explanation of rumors. Experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2022, IFIP International Federation for information processing.

Guaranteing the quality of face object in video call is the key task for video coding systems under the constrained bandwidth of network. Conventionally, the face object is divided into disperse blocks under the hybrid coding framework. Therefore, the characteristics of the complete face object have not been fully used. Meanwhile, it is difficult to predict the complex affine transformations such as rotation and scaling of the face object in neighboring frames based on the current translation motion model. In this paper, we propose an improved video coding scheme for video call. The complex transformation of complete face object is used to improve the compression effect. Experimental results show that our proposed method has better performance compared with HM12.0, the bits rate saving of face region is up to 19.59% under the similar visual quality. In this paper, we introduced an intelligent call center platform (ICCP) for communication enterprises. The platform is based on two broad suites of technologies: Knowledge management and natural language processing. First, we designed an enterprise knowledge modeling technology, and provided a knowledge management system for managing customer service knowledge. Then mobile customers are allowed to send Chinese queries, through either Internet tools (e.g. MSN, QQ, BBS and Fetion) or Wireless SM devices (e.g. mobile phones), to a multi-tier natural language understanding engine, and the engine retrieves the knowledge bases to find correct answers after understanding the queries. The ICCP has been successfully used in a domestic communication group since March 2009, and achieved a satisfactory performance. © 2010 IEEE.

We propose a novel locality sensitive vocabulary coding scheme to extract compact descriptors for low bit rate visual search. We employ Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to learn the topic vocabularies of lower dimension to generate compact descriptors. To deal with diverse datasets, LDA model is introduced to subdivide a dataset into groups of images with a topic model, where the code word distributions in each group produce coherent statistics from generative learning. Moreover, our empirical study has shown that the original Bag-of-Word (BoW) is sparse, and the occurrences of non-zero words is coherent within a topic. Our proposed topic-wise vocabulary learning yields a more compact yet discriminative codebook to search images. Given a query image, multiple topics are determined, which is fed into the topic vocabularies to generate more compact topical descriptor. Comparison experiments show our topic-wise locality sensitive vocabulary coding produces more compact and discriminative descriptors than the state-of-the-arts. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper we present a feature extraction approach by using ICA filters bank, which consists of the ICA basis images learned from the training images. On the basis of its ability to capture the inherent properties of textured image, we use the ICA filters bank as template model to extract the texture feature for segmentation. Experiments based on clustering and classifications are demonstrated to show the feasibility of this method. © 2009 IEEE.

In a Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) piconet, the master node controls the channel access by a simple polling scheme. Due to an absence of coordination among independent master nodes while accessing the wireless medium, devices will encounter high packet interference if many piconets are simultaneously operating in the same area. In this paper, we propose two schemes in the converged BTLE and cellular network, one is based on bad channel prediction for the BTLE piconets, and the other is based on frequency hopping sequences transformation. We compare the performance of the proposed algorithms with original scheme in the form of channel collision probability and new signaling overhead. The simulation results show that the proposed schemes can reduce channel collision probability significantly and simultaneously the new signaling overhead introduced to the downlink is not large. © 2011 IEEE.
