This paper proposes a method which is not for summarization but for extracting multiple facets from a text according to the keyword sets representing readers' interests, so that readers can obtain the interested facets and carry out faceted navigation on text. A facet is a meaningful combination of the subsets of the text. Previous text process technologies are mostly based on text features such as word frequency, sentence location, syntax analysis and discourse analysis. These approaches neglect the cognition process of human reading. The proposed method considers human reading process. Experiments show that the facet extraction is effective and robust. © 2012 IEEE.

Comic-like summaries exploit the narrative structure of comics to create intuitive and easily readable abstracts. However, real comics use complex composition techniques which are difficult to mimic in an unsupervised way as they involve high level semantic understanding. This paper explores the use of visual attention analysis and face detection to embed regions of interest in adjacent images, obtaining more compact yet informative representations. This paper also addresses the generation of the layout, which involves combinatorial optimization problems. In practice, using exhaustive search to solve the problem is not feasible due to the large number of images. A split and merge approach is proposed to effectively address the layout problem, thus the limitations of finding solutions in a wide range of row widths can be avoided. A user study conducted on several episodes of TV series confirmed the utility of the proposed approach. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper,a novel adaptive interference suppression algorithm is proposed for high dynamic GPS (global positioning system) *** new method incorporates derivative constraints on the inter-ference DOA (direction of arrival) into power minimization approach,which could broaden the width of nulls in the interferences directions and adapt to the rapid change of the interference *** with the traditional wide nulling algorithm based on the derivative constraints,the new method does not have to know or estimate the DOAs of the desired signal and the *** new method is firstly discussed in the context of spatial processing,and then extended to space-time adaptive processing to mitigate wideband diffusive multipath *** of the new method is verified via simulation examples.

Pivot probability induction for statistical machine translation with topic similarity

Previous works employ the pivot language approach to conduct statistical machine translation when encountering with limited amount of bilingual corpus. Conventional solutions based upon phrase-table combination overlook the semantic discrepancy between the source-pivot corpus and pivot-target corpus and consequently lead to probability estimation inaccuracy for the induced translation rules. In this paper, the latent topic structure of the document-level training data is learned automatically and each phrase translation rule is assigned to a topic distribution. Furthermore, the phrase probability induction is carried out on the basis of the topic similarity, allowing the translation system to consider the semantic relatedness among different rules. Using BLEU as a metric of translation accuracy, we find out our system is capable of achieving a absolute improvement in in-domain test compared with the baseline system. © 2013 Binary information Press.

In this paper, we present our system description for the CoNLL-2012 coreference resolution task on English, Chinese and Arabic. We investigate a projection-based model in which we first translate Chinese and Arabic into English, run a publicly available coreference system, and then use a new projection algorithm to map the coreferring entities back from English into mention candidates detected in the Chinese and Arabic source. We compare to a baseline that just runs the English coreference system on the supplied parses for Chinese and Arabic. Because our method does not beat the baseline system on the development set, we submit outputs generated by the baseline system as our final submission. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

The goal of semantic dependency parsing is to build dependency structure and label semantic relation between a head and its modifier. To attain this goal, we concentrate on obtaining better dependency structure to predict better semantic relations, and propose a method to combine the results of three state-of-The-Art dependency parsers. Unfortunately, we made a mistake when we generate the final output that results in a lower score of 56.31%in term of labeled Attachment Score (LAS), reported by organizers. After giving golden testing set, we fix the bug and rerun the evaluation script, this time we obtain the score of 62.8% which is consistentwith the results on developing set. We will report detailed experimental results with correct program as a comparison standard for further research. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In this paper, we present our system description in task of Cross-lingual Textual Entailment. The goal of this task is to detect entailment relations between two sentences written in different languages. To accomplish this goal, we first translate sentences written in foreign languages into English. Then, we use EDITS1, an open source package, to recognize entailment relations. Since EDITS only draws monodirectional relations while the task requires bidirectional prediction, thus we exchange the hypothesis and test to detect entailment in another direction. Experimental results show that our method achieves promising results but not perfect results compared to other participants. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Previous work using topic model for statistical machine translation (SMT) explore topic information at the word level. However, SMT has been advanced from word-based paradigm to phrase/rule-based paradigm. We therefore propose a topic similarity model to exploit topic information at the synchronous rule level for hierarchical phrase-based translation. We associate each synchronous rule with a topic distribution, and select desirable rules according to the similarity of their topic distributions with given documents. We show that our model significantly improves the translation performance over the baseline on NIST Chinese-to-English translation experiments. Our model also achieves a better performance and a faster speed than previous approaches that work at the word level. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.
