Elastic scaling in response to changes on demand is a main benefit of serverless computing. When bursty workloads arrive, a serverless platform launches many new containers and initializes function environments (known as cold starts), which incurs significant startup latency. To reduce cold starts, platforms usually pause a container after it serves a request, and reuse this container for subsequent requests. However, this reuse strategy cannot efficiently reduce cold starts because the schedulers are agnostic of container lifecycle. For example, it may ignore soon available containers or evict soon needed containers. We propose a container lifecycle-aware scheduling strategy for serverless computing, CAS. The key idea is to control distribution of requests and determine creation or eviction of containers according to different lifecycle phases of containers. We implement a prototype of CAS on OpenWhisk. Our evaluation shows that CAS reduces 81% cold starts and therefore brings a 63% reduction at 95th percentile latency compared with native scheduling strategy in OpenWhisk when there is worker contention between workloads, and does not add significant performance overhead. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

In the archive of the Ground Wide Angle Camera(GWAC),we found 43 white light flares from 43 stars,among which,three are sympathetic or homologous flares,and one of them also has a quasi-periodic pulsation with a period of 13.0±1.5 *** these 43 flare stars,there are 19 new active stars and 41 stars that have available TESS and/or K2 light curves,from which we found 931 stellar *** also obtained rotational or orbital periods of 34 GWAC flare stars,of which 33 are less than 5.4 days,and ephemerides of three eclipsing binaries from these light *** with low resolution spectra from LAMOST and the Xinglong 2.16 m telescope,we found that L_(Hα)/L_(bol) are in the saturation region in the rotation-activity *** the LAMOST medium-resolution spectrum,we found that Star#3(HAT 178-02667)has double Hαemissions which imply it is a binary,and two components are both active *** stars have flare frequency distributions(FFDs)from TESS and/or K2 light *** FFDs show that the flares detected by GWAC can occur at a frequency of 0.5to 9.5 yr^(-1).The impact of flares on habitable planets was also studied based on these FFDs,and flares from some GWAC flare stars may produce enough energetic flares to destroy ozone layers,but none can trigger prebiotic chemistry on their habitable planets.

In recent years, receiver (RX) feedback communication has attracted increasing attention to enhance the charging performance for magnetic resonant coupling (MRC) based wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. People prefer to adopt the in-band implementation with minimal overhead costs. However, the influence of RX-RX coupling couldn't be directly ignored like that in the RFID field, i.e., strong couplings and relay phenomenon. In order to solve these two critical issues, we propose a Robust layer-level in-band parallel communication protocol for MIMO MRC-WPT systems (called Roland). Technically, we first utilize the observed channel decomposability to construct group-level channel relationship graph for eliminating the interference caused by strong RX-RX couplings. Then, we generalize such method to deal with the RX dependency due to relay phenomenon. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on a prototype testbed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. The results demonstrate that our Roland could provide ≥95% average decoding accuracy for concurrent feedback communication of 14 devices. Compared with the state-of-the-art solution, the proposed protocol Roland can achieve an average decoding accuracy improvement of 20.41%. © 2023 IEEE.

Pretraining data Detection for Large Language Models: A Divergence-based Calibration Method

As the scale of training corpora for large language models (LLMs) grows, model developers become increasingly reluctant to disclose details on their data. This lack of transparency poses challenges to scientific evaluation and ethical deployment. Recently, pretraining data detection approaches, which infer whether a given text was part of an LLM's training data through black-box access, have been explored. The Min-K% Prob method, which has achieved state-of-the-art results, assumes that a non-training example tends to contain a few outlier words with low token probabilities. However, the effectiveness may be limited as it tends to misclassify non-training texts that contain many common words with high probabilities predicted by LLMs. To address this issue, we introduce a divergence-based calibration method, inspired by the divergence-from-randomness concept, to calibrate token probabilities for pretraining data detection. We compute the cross-entropy (i.e., the divergence) between the token probability distribution and the token frequency distribution to derive a detection score. We have developed a Chinese-language benchmark, PatentMIA, to assess the performance of detection approaches for LLMs on Chinese text. Experimental results on English-language benchmarks and PatentMIA demonstrate that our proposed method significantly outperforms existing methods. In recent years, research has illuminated the potency of implicit data processing in enhancing user preferences. Nevertheless, barriers remain in breaking through the constraints of implicit information. This study aims to bridge this gap by firstly constructing a triangular stable node network model, tailored to manage implicit information with precision. Recognizing the challenge of pinpointing novel structures within large-scale graphs, we propose SLTSNN-a triangular stable node network based on self-supervised learning for personalized prediction. SLTSNN innovates by maximizing mutual information between graph-level and patch-level representations, while augmenting graph representations through extended enhanced representations. Additionally, it incorporates triangular data associations and introduces a triangular allocation attention network, which emphasizes strongly correlated preference features among similar users. Furthermore, SLTSNN employs contrastive learning to maximize mutual information between graph vectors and hidden representations, distinguishing between high-order global and local representations. The model's effectiveness in enhancing user preferences and capturing new graph structures is evidenced by its performance on hit rate and normalized discounted cumulative gain metrics across three datasets. © 2025 IEEE.

An In-Context Schema Understanding Method for Knowledge Base Question Answering

The Knowledge Base Question Answering (KBQA) task aims to answer natural language questions based on a given knowledge base. Recently, Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown strong capabilities in language understanding and can be used to solve this task. In doing so, a major challenge for LLMs is to overcome the immensity and heterogeneity of knowledge base schemas. Existing methods bypass this challenge by initially employing LLMs to generate drafts of logic forms without schema-specific details. Then, an extra module is used to inject schema information to these drafts. In contrast, in this paper, we propose a simple In-Context Schema Understanding (ICSU) method that enables LLMs to directly understand schemas by leveraging in-context learning. Specifically, ICSU provides schema information to LLMs using schema-related annotated examples. We investigate three example retrieval strategies based on raw questions, anonymized questions, and generated SPARQL queries. Experimental results show that ICSU demonstrates competitive performance compared to baseline methods on both the KQA Pro and WebQSP datasets. © 2023, CC BY.

QUITO-X: A New Perspective on Context Compression from the Information Bottleneck Theory

Generative large language models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable success in various industrial applications, owing to their promising In-Context Learning capabilities. However, the issue of long context in complex tasks poses a significant barrier to their wider adoption, manifested in two main aspects: (i) The excessively long context leads to high costs and inference delays. (ii) A substantial amount of task-irrelevant information introduced by long contexts exacerbates the "lost in the middle" problem. Existing methods compress context by removing redundant tokens using metrics such as self-information or perplexity (PPL), which is inconsistent with the objective of retaining the most important tokens when conditioning on a given query. In this study, we introduce information bottleneck theory (IB) to model the problem, offering a novel perspective that thoroughly addresses the essential properties required for context compression. Additionally, we propose a cross-attention-based approach to approximate mutual information in IB, which can be flexibly replaced with suitable alternatives in different scenarios. Extensive experiments on four datasets demonstrate that our method achieves a 25% increase in compression rate compared to the state-of-the-art, while maintaining question answering performance. In particular, the context compressed by our method even outperform the full context in some cases. © 2024, CC BY.

Dual-view gaze target estimation in classroom environments has not been thoroughly explored. Existing methods lack consideration of depth information, primarily focusing on 2D image information and neglecting the latent 3D spatial context, which could lead to suboptimal transformation and cause the gaze cone to intersect with an incorrect object. This paper introduces a novel dual-view gaze target estimation method tailored for classroom settings, leveraging depth-enhanced spatial transformations. By formulating a depth-enhanced 2D space, our method uses depth-enhanced spatial transformation to accurately project students' gaze cones to the teacher-oriented image. Additionally, we collected a dataset named DVSGE, specifically for student gaze target estimation in dual-view classroom images. Experimental results demonstrate significant performance improvements of 9.8% in AUC and 19.9% in L2-Distance for our method, surpassing existing methods. © 2025 IEEE.

EEG-based fatigue driving monitoring has important application value in road traffic safety, and the ultimate goal of the research is the development and use of wearable devices, and too many EEG channels in practical application scenarios is detrimental to device portability, and it will lead to problems such as large amount of data, complex calculation and long processing time, so it is especially important to study how to select the EEG channels highly correlated with fatigue. In this paper, a PLI-Relief-based channel selection algorithm by combining the PLI functional connectivity and the weighting idea of Relief algorithm is proposed, and it is applied to the channel selection of fatigue driving EEG. First, the PLI functional connectivity matrix is constructed for the EEG signals after preprocessing, and the binarized PLI matrix is mapped into a brain functional network, and the prime channels are selected by the degree property of the brain network. Then, the power spectral density features are extracted from the EEG signals of the prime channels, and the weights of each prime channel are obtained using the relief algorithm, then the number and the names of optimal channels are determined according to the recognition accuracy of different channel combinations. The proposed method was validated on the publicly available SEED-VIG dataset, and the data of the seven optimal channels is finally selected and obtains a classification accuracy of 81.25%. The framework proposed in this paper takes into account both the correlation between channels and the characteristics of the channel signals themselves in channel selection, which is a reference value for the development and application of wearable devices. © 2022 IEEE.

COVID-19 virus is a major worldwide pandemic that is growing at a fast pace throughout the world. The usual approach for diagnosing COVID-19 is the use of a real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) based nucleic acid test. However, RT-PCR has lower sensitivity in the early phases of COVID-19 detection. Recent studies have indicated that X-ray images may be useful throughout the early detection of the virus. Human screening has been shown to be cost-effective, susceptible to mistakes, and time-demanding, which has sparked an interest in using Convolutional Neural networks (CNNs) to automate the process. CNNs, on the other hand, fail to view the exact placement of features as advantageous in medical imaging. Furthermore, for successful training and prediction, CNNs need a huge quantity of datasets. CNNs are rapidly reducing picture resolution, resulting in worsening accuracy in classification. We used newly created capsule networks (CapsNets) in our study to circumvent these disadvantages. The primary contribution is to improve the identification of SARS-CoV-2 with images obtained from X-ray by coupling capsule network with a kernel support vector machine (KSVM). The technique was evaluated using a publicly available dataset, and the proposed model shows that the accuracy of the CapsNet-KSVM based model is improved by 94.6% accuracy, 95% sensitivity, and 98% specificity, which outperforms the traditional CNN and other existing ensemble models. The proposed CapsNet-KSVM based system can be employed to identify the presence of COVID-19 in the human body using X-ray images. © 2022 IEEE.
