A Robust Measurement Placement Method for Active Distribution system State Estimation Considering Network Reconfiguration

The influences of network reconfiguration and distributed generations (DGs) on distribution system state estimation (DSSE) and measurement placement should not be ignored in active distribution systems. In this paper, considering network reconfiguration and the output uncertainties of DGs, a robust measurement placement method for active distribution systems is proposed based on measurement saturation analysis and heuristic algorithm. First, the saturation number determined by measurement saturation characteristic is chosen as the measurement number. Then, the impacts of different network topologies are represented by various weights in the robust measurement placement model, which are computed by Markov chain and analytic hierarchy process. In addition, Gaussian mixture model is applied to approximate the power fluctuations of DGs. Uncertainties caused by measurements are considered by Monte Carlo simulations. The accuracy of DSSE in different network topologies can be guaranteed by the proposed robust measurement placement method. Simulation results based on the IEEE 33-bus and 119-bus distribution systems demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Eigen-Analysis of Large Delayed Cyber-Physical power system by Time Integration-Based Solution Operator Discretization Methods

In this paper, solution operator discretization methods with linear multistep and implicit Runge-Kutta (SOD-LMS/IRK) are presented for efficient eigen-analysis of large delayed cyber-physical power system (DCPPS). First, the time integration-based discretization generates highly structured approximate matrices to the solution operator. Exploitation of the structure ensures low computational burden and high efficiency in solving the matrix-inversion-vector product involved in eigenvalue computation. Second, the implicitly restarted Arnoldi algorithm is employed to compute critical eigenvalue from the solution operator's discretized matrices. SOD-LMS/IRK are endowed with scalability in analyzing very large DCPPS by fully utilizing the inherent sparsity in the augmented system state matrices. The main contribution of the presented SOD-LMS/IRK is the improved efficiency and scalability of existing SOD-PS (pseudo-spectral collocation) and SOD-LMS/IRK. Numerical results on the 16-generator 68-bus test system, a 516-bus, and a 33028-hus real-life large transmission systems validate the effectiveness of the proposed SOD-LMS/IRK.

With the rapid development of flexible DC transmission and multi-terminal high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) (MTDC) grid, the protection schemes of flexible DC transmission lines are still the traditional methods, which do not achieve the properties of fast and selective operation in the DC grid. In this study, using Zhangbei MTDC grid as the research object, the fast protection of DC transmission lines of MTDC grid has been studied. First, the voltage response characteristics of fault line and non-fault line at the boundary of DC lines are analysed. On the basis of this, using wavelet transform to extract the characteristic value of voltage pole-wave, this study put forward a high-speed non-unit protection criterion to identify the internal and external faults. In addition, two auxiliary criteria are constructed to identify lightning disturbance and faulted pole, respectively. Finally, a simulation model of Zhangbei MTDC grid is constructed, and the effectiveness of the proposed protection scheme is verified by extensive simulation results. © 2019 Institution of Engineering and *** right reserved.

For the dynamic reconfiguration problem of distribution networks, the handling of switching cost constraint and the division of time period are the two key aspects that affect the performance of the reconfiguration algorithm. In this paper, an improved temporal constrained hierarchical clustering algorithm for dynamic reconfiguration of distribution networks is proposed. Firstly, the improved hierarchical clustering approach considering the temporal constraint is used to divide the operating status of the distribution network into multiple time intervals according to the similarity of loads and the output power of distributed generations (DGs). The dynamic reconfiguration of distribution networks is then transformed into multiple single-stage static reconfiguration problems, and the cluster center is used to approximately represent the load state and DG output state of the period. In order to reduce the number of infeasible solutions and poor solutions, a coding method based on heuristic rules to reduce the solution space of distribution network reconfiguration is proposed. An improved fireworks algorithm based on heuristic rules is proposed to solve the reconfiguration problem. Finally, a modified IEEE-33 test system is used to verify the validity of the proposed method.

Fast Symmetrical Component Extraction From Unbalanced Three-Phase Signals Using Non-Nominal dq-Transformation

This letter proposes a new algorithm for the fast extraction of symmetrical components from unbalanced three-phase signals. Being different from the conventional methods for the decomposition of positive and negative sequence components commonly realized at the cost of introducing significant delay, the proposed algorithm assumes the non-nominal dq-transformation to first produce the special d-axis and q-axis components, which will become the pure high-frequency ac signals, and then uses the typical half-cycle delay method to remove the unwanted negative or positive sequence component. Finally, the proper amplitude and phase angle coefficients can be easily calculated to compensate the remaining high-frequency d-axis and q-axis components before transforming them to the expected d-axis and q-axis values of corresponding symmetrical components. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated through simulation and experiment results.

Detection and Feeder Identification of the High Impedance Fault at Distribution Networks Based on Synchronous Waveform Distortions

Diagnosis of high impedance fault (HIF) is a challenge for nowadays distribution network protections. The fault current of a HIF is much lower than that of a normal load, and fault feature is significantly affected by fault scenarios. A detection and feeder identification algorithm for HIFs is proposed in this paper, based on the high-resolution and synchronous waveform data. In the algorithm, an interval slope is defined to describe the waveform distortions, which guarantees a uniform feature description under various HIF nonlinearities and noise interferences. For three typical types of network neutrals, i.e., isolated neutral, resonant neutral, and low-resistor-earthed neutral, differences of the distorted components between the zero-sequence currents of healthy and faulty feeders are mathematically deduced, respectively. As a result, the proposed criterion, which is based on the distortion relationships between zero-sequence currents of feeders and the zero-sequence voltage at the substation, is theoretically supported. 28 HIFs grounded to various materials are tested in a 10kV distribution network with three neutral types, and are utilized to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Fault Modeling of IIDG Considering Inverter's Detailed Characteristics

As more and more inverter interfaced distributed generators (IIDGs) such as PV are connected to the distribution network (DN), the existing relay protection system may malfunction due to the impact of the IIDGs. In order to evaluate that impact, the fault analysis of the DN with IIDGs is needed and the fault modelling of IIDG is of great significant for the fault analysis and the protection system validation and improvement. This paper proposes a new fault modelling method of IIDG that could consider the detailed characteristics of the inverter in different situations including the limitation of the modulation. The symmetrical fault model of PQ controlled IIDG is deduced by the proposed method, based on which the symmetrical fault analysis of the DN with IIDGs is carried out. The proposed model depicts IIDG as a voltage-controlled current source or a voltage-controlled voltage source according to whether the modulation is limited, therefore covers the full characteristics of the inverter under different conditions, improving the modelling accuracy. The case study based on the modified IEEE 13 nodes system shows that the fault analysis results obtained from the proposed model are more consistent with electromagnetic transient simulation than that of the state-of-art fault model, verifying its effectiveness.

Sequence control strategy for hybrid energy storage system for wind smoothing

In this study, an advanced control strategy is proposed for hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) to smooth wind power generation fluctuations. Compared with the limited performance of solo energy storage system, the HESS, composing of lithium-ion battery (LiB) and a flywheel energy storage system (FESS), can comparatively show improved flexibility and adaptivity. A novel sequence control scheme for the HESS is proposed in this study to improve the overall economic and smoothing performances. Specifically, based on variable-interval reference outputs, the control horizon of the HESS is statistically determined. Afterwards, a sequence control scheme for the HESS is presented to improve the internal collaboration of HESS media. Especially when the LiB and FESS are synchronously charging/discharging to smooth wind power, the charge/discharge power are optimally distributed between the LiB and FESS via an optimiser to minimise the equivalent cost during each control cycle. Case studies are conducted to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

Single-ended MMC-MTDC line protection based on dual-frequency amplitude ratio of traveling wave

Fast and reliable DC line protection is an essential challenge for the modular multilevel converter (MMC) based multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) grid. This paper proposed a novel single-ended protection scheme for DC lines in MMC-MTDC grids. Firstly, the values of the initial voltage traveling wave (IVTW) generated by internal and external faults are calculated by using the equivalent model of the MTDC grid, respectively. Then a criterion for identifying internal and external faults is constructed based on the amplitude ratio of the low-frequency component of the IVTW to its high-frequency component. The amplitude of the IVTW in both frequency bands is concisely expressed by the modulus maximums of stationary wavelet transform (SWT). Additionally, the criteria for discriminating the fault direction and the faulted pole are also proposed, which are both based on the integral values of the fault component currents on positiveand negative-pole lines. Lastly, simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed protection scheme.

This paper presents a comprehensive distribution robust optimization model based on the distribution network risk index to address the distributional uncertainties of distributed generations (DGs) and loads. To analyze the security of active distribution network (ADN) systematically, a risk assessment method based on improved semi-invariant method and clustering technique is proposed. The risk assessment method is performed on the integrated dynamic reconfiguration and reactive power optimization model. This method can consider the correlation between distributed power sources, and when the injected power is large, the calculation results with higher accuracy can be obtained Case studies on the PG&E 69-bus system verify the robustness and feasibility of the proposed model.
