This paper presents a parameters-setting method for the synchronization of pumped-storage units under the pumping condition. The synchronizing process of the units is analyzed and the synchronizing parameters-setting principle of generating units is referred. Finally, the method is educed through mathematical formula derivation. Under the pumping condition, the setting value of the closing pulse leading time and the synchronizing process are both different from those of the generating condition, so the changes of voltage and frequency of pumping condition during closing pulse leading time are deduced. Then, the setting method of the allowable voltage difference, frequency difference and closing angular phase difference could be obtained. The parameters-setting method in this paper provides the theoretical foundation for synchronizing parameters setting of pumped storage unit. It is significant for decreasing the synchronizing impact current and heightening success rate of synchronization.

Deferrable loads can actively participate in the power system operation as a schedulable resource. The loads are modulated by shifting their demand characteristics along the time horizon, i.e., orchestrating the starting instants. Through flattening peaks and valleys of the demand curve, generating units are released from the burden of frequent output adjustments and a higher operating efficiency can be achieved. An optimal day-ahead dispatch strategy is proposed for deferrable loads. The next-day demand characteristics of the deferrable loads can be derived using historical data or behavior analysis. The starting instants of the loads are to be delicately delayed or advanced within the 24-h period. By such modulation, the aggregation of the controlled loads aims to closely track the dispatch objective that is assigned by the control center. An optimal model is constructed to describe the dispatch problem, which can be converted into a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) one. The coefficients of the MIQP problem are computed using MATlab. The solver SBB of GAMS is applied to solving the MIQP problem. Simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed optimal dispatch strategy. The aggregation of the controlled loads can closely track the dispatch objective.

With rapid increase of wind power installed capacity, the operation mode of power system has changed greatly, it is necessary to include modeling and simulation based on wind turbines and farms. Numerical simulation plays a unique role in power system operation and control, and its accuracy turns out to be the focus of electric industry. PSASP and PSS/E, as two main sorts of simulation analysis software at home and abroad respectively, both enable wind turbines electromechanical transient simulation. In this paper, Detailed comparisons are made between Doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) in PSS/E and PSASP. Finally, simulative results of power system including the models are compared and analyzed.

A robust measurement system can take account of the influence on Distribution system State Estimation (DSSE) caused by network reconfiguration. This paper proposes an optimization algorithm to determine the number and position of the measurement devices separately. The concept of measurement saturation is proposed, and the position of measurement devices is determined based on a heuristic algorithm constrained by the saturate number. Both network reconfiguration and the uncertainties introduced by the measurements are taken into account. The probabilities of different network configurations are given by Markov chain, and the uncertainties introduced by the measurements are simulated by Monte Carlo algorithm. The results obtained on IEEE33-bus system demonstrate that saturate number is usually one third of the number of nodes for a system, and the robust measurement placement method considering different network configurations can improve the precision of DSSE.

10kV distribution network is always a neutral point ungrounded system. Single-phase line break and grounding fault frequently occurs in 10kV distribution networks, threats the safe and stable operation of power grid and damages people's lives and properties. A methodology to differentiate type of single-phase line break fault is proposed in this paper, which uses sequence network and symmetrical components method to analyze and summarize the voltage and current variation when various single-phase line break fault occurs, then draw the voltage phasor diagram and current phasor diagram. The voltage and current variation and phasor diagrams will provide criteria for the detection and identification of single-phase line break fault in ungrounded distribution networks. Simulation results show the accuracy of the theoretical analysis in this paper.

Due to the increasing capacity of grid-connected photovoltaic systems in distribution networks, its impact on the voltage security can't be ignored. In this paper, based on the voltage stability criterion of maximum transmission power, and considering induction motor voltage response characteristic, the impact of dynamic behaviors of grid-connected photovoltaic systems on transient voltage stability is investigated. Three scenarios have been analyzed, respectively corresponding to three kinds of photovoltaic system's dynamic behaviors: stopping operation after voltage sags, low-voltage ride-through capability and dynamic voltage support. In addition, P-V curve is applied to do theoretical interpretation for the simulation results in the revised IEEE 33-bus distribution network, and it is testified that grid-connected photovoltaic systems equipped with low-voltage ride-through capability can remarkably improve distribution network transient voltage stability, and the effectiveness would be more prominent with the dynamic voltage support of photovoltaic systems.

A practical approach to long-term power system dynamics analysis should make a trade-off between result precision and time consumption. To address the time consuming issue of full scale numerical integration, an analysis method is proposed which tracks system evolving states interwoven by continuous dynamics and discrete events. Feasible operating states are solved by using temporal power flow (TPF) routines, which are convergent points of fast dynamics. TPF is driven by load growth that is embedded into the time horizon. Events are triggered and time stamped during the TPF routines, which involves OLTCs, exciter limiters and branch load encroachment, etc. Upon detecting instability or collapse, the routines are stopped. Simulation results on the New England 39-bus system verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper first develops a modified control loop to realize flux-weakening in PMSMs. For a given load torque, the modified control loop ensures the maximum speed of the PMSM is always reached at the optimized path. Next, a benchmark test system based on the co-simulation of Simulink, PSIM and Motor-Solve is developed to obtain a representative simulation of the PMSM traction drive. With the simulated currents, the 3-D simulation tool based on finite element analysis, MagNet, is used to predict the motor loss. Using this benchmark system, the influence of SVPWM and DPWM0-3 on the traction drive and motor losses, over the entire operating range is investigated. Furthermore, over-modulation of SVPWM is implemented to investigate its effect on control performance and holistic loss reduction. The simulation results validates the effect of over-modulation to reduce the inverter loss and motor loss in the flux-weakening region.

The Thevenin equivalent circuit parameters for the upstream system seen at a load bus plays an important role in the power system operation and planning. In order to accurately estimate the Thevenin equivalent parameters for the upstream supply system, an estimation method not requiring synchronized measurement is used in this paper. The characteristics of the probability curves of load voltage and impedance fluctuations have been analyzed, based on which the data selection criteria has been established. The field measurement data from different substations are processed by the proposed methods, and abnormal data has been filtered out in order to increase the accuracy of the estimated parameters. The validity and accuracy of the proposed method has been verified by both the simulation and field measurement data.

In this paper a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) is proposed to solve the dynamic economic dispatch (DED) with valve-point effect (VPE), prohibited operation zones (POZs), and multiple fuel option (MFO). The non-convex, non-continuous cost functions caused by VPE, POZs, and MFO are piecewise linearized and solved by a MIQP. The effects of VPE, POZs, and MFO on the computation efficiency are analyzed. It shown that the VPE has much larger impact on the computation efficiency than POZs and MFO. The proposed method is tested on a 10-unit system.
