Frequency response modeling and equivalent inertial estimation of induction machine

With the rapid development of renewable energy and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC), the power system is turning to be a low-inertia system. Due to insufficient inertia on the power side, the proportion of inertia on the load side increases. The frequency support ability of the induction machine in the inertial time scale needs to be investigated. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the time-varying characteristics of the effective inertia of induction machine and to estimate the frequency support ability of induction machine. In this paper, the induction machine model in electromechanical transient process is established, and its transfer function is deduced by using small-signal model, and the time-varying characteristics and affecting factors of the induction machine's inertia on the grid are analyzed. Besides, an evaluation model of the equivalent inertia of induction machine is proposed to quantify the inertial support ability of dynamic loads, and the frequency support ability of the model and the dynamic characteristics of induction machine are analyzed. Finally, the simulation model is conducted on MATlab/Simulink platform to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the model proposed in this paper. (c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Nine-arm modular multilevel converter (9A-MMC) is a compact modular multilevel converter (MMC) with two sets of three-phase output terminals, and it can be regarded as the integration of two conventional six-arm modular multilevel converters (6A-MMC) with double function middle arms. Compared with two 6A-MMCs, the required submodules (SMs) in 9A-MMC can be reduced, however, there will be some performance tradeoffs, and the performance tradeoffs of 9A-MMC have not yet been investigated in detail. Hence, this paper gives the comprehensive comparisons between 6A-MMC and 9A-MMC, including the required SMs number, the current stress of the semiconductor device, the maximum capacitor voltage ripple, and the power losses of the whole system. This paper can be a guide to make the best use of the advantages and avoid the disadvantages of 9A-MMC. Finally, the simulation results verify the mathematical analysis of the comparisons. © 2021 All rights reserved.

Modeling and stability analysis of grid-tied VSC considering the impact of voltage feed-forward

The single-input and single-output (SISO) transfer functions are proposed in this paper to analyze the impact of voltage feed-forward (VFF) loop on the stability of grid-tied voltage-source converter (VSC). Based on the SISO transfer functions, the VFF's impacts are analyzed by considering the influence of current control integral time constant (ITC) and the grid impedance ratio X/R. To be specific, the VFF can improve the stability when the VSC has a large ITC, while it can decrease the stability when the VSC has a small ITC. The impedance ratio X/R is another affecting factor to the VFF when the phase-locked loop (PLL) dynamics are included in the transfer function model. The closed-loop poles of the VSC without the VFF loop are sensitive to the decrease of X/R, while it is not very susceptible to the variation of X/R when the VFF loop is applied in VSC. The proposed SISO transfer functions and stability analysis are both verified through simulations.

With the development of communication technology and the wide-area measurement system, the prospect of incorporating active distribution networks (ADNs) with micro phasor measurement units (ttPMUs) to obtain integrated system information for state estimation and fault location, is becoming increasingly promising. This paper presents a fault location method for ADNs with finite ttPMUs. First, the configuration of the ttPMUs is optimized to ensure that the entire distribution network is considered and that the global phasor information can be comprehensively utilized. The fault section detection criterion for the unbalanced current component amplitude comparison, is used to locate the fault. Utilizing PSCAD/EMTDC and MATlab, it is verified that this method is not affected by the fault location and is suitable for multi-type faults and extreme disturbance. This method exhibits a high resilience to transition resistance and is robust when employed in the improved IEEE 33-node test system.

A power Grid Fault Diagnosis Method in the Case of Alarm Information Loss Based on the Top-k Skyline Query Algorithm

After the failure of the power system, a large amount of alarm information will flood into the dispatching terminal instantly. At the same time, there are inevitable problems, such as the abnormal operation of the protection and the circuit breaker, the lack of alarm information, and so on. This kind of uncertainty problem brings great trouble to the fault diagnosis algorithm. As a data processing algorithm for an uncertain information set, Top-k Skyline query algorithm can eliminate the data points that do not meet the requirements in the information set, and then output the final K results in order. Based on this background, this paper proposes a power grid fault diagnosis method based on the Top-k Skyline query algorithm considering alarm information loss. Firstly, the fault area is determined by using the information of the electrical quantity and switching value. Then, backward reasoning Petri nets are established for the nodes in the fault area to form the data set of fault hypotheses. Then, the Top-k Skyline query algorithm is used to sort the hypotheses and choose the hypothesis with higher reliability. Finally, an IEEE 39-bus system example is given to verify the reliability of the proposed method.

During each summer, the super grid transformers (SGTs) inside GB transmission network are maintained according to the schedule which is determined by the asset management strategies. The outage of selected transformer often results in an increased loading on the rest of transformers in the adjacent circuits. Any type of faults occurring on circuits or other elements during this period of time is likely to cause overloads on the remaining transformers which could lead to a breach of the Security and Quality of Supply Standards (SQSS). The transformer operational tripping scheme (OTS) is a technique for protecting transformers from overloading by tripping pre-selected groups of generations so that the loading on the monitored transformers can be relieved during the contingencies. An event-based transformer OTS has been constantly armed in the GB network. This paper presents a novel technique to integrate the real time transformer temperature estimation into an existing transformer OTS. This technique improves the OTS by reducing the number of unnecessary generation tripping, which is initiated from the overly conservative transformer ratings. This novel scheme will generate enormous economic benefits as well as provide significant flexibility to the GB system operator - National Grid Electricity system Operator (NGESO). The new scheme is an example of a Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and control (WAMPAC) application.

Optimal scheduling of electricity-gas-heat integrated energy system with coordination of flexibility and reliability

With the increase of penetration rate of renewable energy sources (RESs), the uncertainty of RESs has raised higher requirements for the flexibility and reliability of energy system. This paper proposes a flexibility and reliability coordinated optimization scheduling model of electricity-gas-heat integrated energy system (IES) to fully exploit the potential of coupling and complementary coordination among electricity, gas and heat energy. According to the interval of net load diversification, the expressions of the flexibility demand and flexibility resources of the multi-energy system are derived, in which the dynamic characteristics (DCs) model of natural gas pipelines and heat flow are established respectively. The evaluation indices of IES operating flexibility and reliability are derived respectively, and the coordination index between flexibility and reliability are defined. Based on the cost-benefit analysis method and equal-response risk method, an IES optimal scheduling model is established, which takes into account the coordination effect of operational flexibility and energy supply reliability. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, simulations are conducted on the modified IES 24-2016 system and IES 118-20-16 system. The results demonstrate that this approach effectively balances the flexibility, reliability and economy of the system. (c) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes a new hybrid method to predict global horizontal irradiance (GHI) at temporal horizons of 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours, combining the satellite visible images and meteorological information. First, the satellite visible images are preprocessed to remove the diurnal effects caused by the solar zenith angle. Then the cloud cover factors are extracted from satellite visible images by using the modified convolutional neural network (CNN). After that, the GHI forecasting model is developed which is based on the combined use of meteorological information and cloud cover factors. The sensitivity of the prediction accuracy to a variety of CNN structures with different widths, depths, and pooling methods is also explored in the paper. Meanwhile, a cloud motion forecasting method using predicted wind speeds is developed. The forecasting skills of the proposed method for different time horizons are demonstrated by comparing with several benchmark models.

The rapid development of integrated wind power bring serious challenges to power system operation. In order to address the increasing wind power curtailment problem, the frequency-voltage characteristics concerned optimal dispatch for power system with large-scale wind power integration is proposed in this paper. Through integration of the optimization of frequency characteristics and voltage characteristics into the traditional power system economic dispatch model, the flexibility resources of generation side and load sides in power systems are mobilized to promote large-scale wind power accommodation. The formulated frequency-voltage characteristics concerned optimal dispatch mathematical model is a nonlinear programming model, which is solved by the GAMS platform. The numerical analysis for an actual provincial power grid indicates that the proposed frequency-voltage characteristics concerned optimal dispatch method can promote wind power utilization efficiency and improve the economy of power system operation.

Hybrid energy storage system (HESS) can stabilize renewable energy power generation, but unreasonable energy storage power distribution and photovoltaic-load forecast errors will affect the economic benefits of the whole system. Aiming at the microgrid (MG) composed of photovoltaic (PV) and HESS, an energy management strategy (EMS) of MG considering forecast errors is proposed. Firstly, an optimization model considering the depreciation cost of battery is established. Secondly, day-ahead EMS is implemented under multiple operating modes considering minimum fluctuation and optimal economy. Then, according to the real-time forecast results and the feedback of system operation status, the intraday rolling energy management strategy (REMS) is developed to alleviate the impact of forecast errors. Finally, the real-time state of charge (SOC) of the supercapacitor (SC) is introduced to adjust the filter coefficient, which avoids the SC working in the charge/discharge restricted area for a long time and improves the adjustment effect. The results of the case analysis show that the proposed intraday REMS can effectively reduce the influence of forecast errors on energy management. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
