Impact of electromechanical coupling on shaft torsional dynamics

The electromechanical coupling model is employed to define the all-mode shape and torsional mode shape, and deduce the linear solutions of torques. Based on the solutions of torques, mode shapes of torques and mode contribution factors of torques are defined. The above physical concepts can directly describe shaft torsional dynamics, and get more insights than the mode shapes previously defined. Moreover, the theoretical basis and the physical implications of free vibration and forced vibration models are analyzed in detail. In light of the difference between the electromechanical coupling model and the free vibration model, the deviations between the calculated and measured values are explained for mode shapes and natural torsional frequencies. The difference between the dynamics of the electromechanical coupling and forced vibration models is analyzed as well. © 2010 Chin. Soc. for Elec. Eng.

Digital based data processing and protection and control system along with digital communication networks introduces new structures for substation protection and control systems and new methods for intelligent protection and control systems. This paper presents a unique vision for the future integration of protection and control systems. Firstly, the basic concept and configuration of the developed protection and control systems for smart substation is introduced. The features and functions of integrated protection and control systems for smart substation are then discussed and compared with that of the traditional substation in detail.

Distributed generation (DG) injects new vigor into the power system, but it sometimes brings unfavorable factors influencing the power quality of distribution network. In this paper, the dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is introduced to the distribution network to improve the power quality. In view of that the detection of voltage compensation is the key factor that influences the effect of voltage compensation, a voltage direct detection method based on mathematical morphology is proposed. Firstly, the positive-sequence voltage with harmonics can be extracted by the instantaneous sequence-component decomposer. And then the harmonics is filtered by mathematical morphology filter. Lastly, the control variable of voltage compensation needed by DVR can be calculated from the voltage direct-detecting algorithm. The simulation results show that this method has the characteristics of favorable accuracy, real-time performance and simplicity, and assures the voltage quality of load side after compensation by DVR.

Considering the operation of microgrids (MGs) composed of distributed generations (DGs) and loads, a service restoration model aiming at the restoration of the most load with giving priority to the important load power supply is built. On the basis of the proposed hierarchical control strategy, this paper builds up a multi-agent system (MAS) for service restoration of microgrid. Accordingly, the special functions and control strategies of each agent are discussed in detail. A simulation example of a particular microgrid based on the multi-agent system is performed to demonstrate that the efficiency and reliability of the microgrid can be improved by using MAS.

Available transfer capability (ATC) is defined as a measure of the system's capability for transfers of power for further commercial activity, over and above already committed uses. In practical power markets, ATC can provide important information for transmission customers, system operators and power marketers. The assessment of ATC should be carried out to assure the secure, economic, stable and reliable operation of power systems. Most of the existing ATC calculation are mainly focused on AC power system and based on deterministic techniques. As high voltage direct current (HVDC) power distribution systems have been extensively used in modem transmission network, less work has been done on evaluation of ATC in AC-DC hybrid power system. This paper is dealing with the evaluation of ATC for the integration of HVDC link with an AC power system. The mathematical model of ATC for AC-DC hybrid power system is proposed. Due to the stochastic nature of power system behaviors, it is important to assess ATC from a statistical and risk analysis point of view. Considering the dynamics, time-varying and uncertainties of hybrid power systems, several statistical indices are presented to evaluate ATC and they are calculated based on Monte Carlo simulation. States of system operation can be simulated, and the algorithm based on MATpower (A MATlab™ power system Simulation Package) is developed in the environment of MATlab 7.5. Case study with a modified IEEE 30-bus AC-DC hybrid power system is used to verify the presented approach. Sequential solution method is employed to deal with the AC-DC power flow. Five-number summary and other statistical indices of ATC are calculated. The results show that the proposed method is effective and practical. The research achievements are undergoing to transfer to the application in other hybrid power systems with different control style, and some new problems are suggested at the end of paper.

In practical power markets, Available Transfer Capability (ATC) is crucial for transmission customers, system operators and power marketers to make a good choice. It is an indication of the expected transfer capability remaining on the transmission network. In order to assure the secure, economic, stable and reliable operation of power systems, the assessment of ATC should be carried out instantly. Most of the existing ATC calculation are mainly focused on AC power systems and based on deterministic techniques. As high performance computing has been extensively used in scientific computation and technology, less work has been done on evaluation of ATC by using parallel algorithm. This paper is dealing with the evaluation of ATC by stochastic parallel algorithm in an AC power system. Due to the stochastic nature of power system behaviors, it is important to assess ATC from a statistical and risk analysis point of view. Considering the dynamics, time-varying and uncertainties of power systems, several statistical indices is presented to evaluate ATC. They are calculated based on Monte Carlo simulation and parallel computing. The system operation states can be simulated by Monte Carlo method, and the parallel algorithm based on MATpower (A MATlab™ power system Simulation Package) is developed. Case study with an IEEE 30-bus power system is used to verify the presented approach. Five-number summary and other statistical indices of ATC are calculated. The results show that the proposed method can elapse shorter computation time and it is more effective and practical. Some new attractive issues are suggested at the end.

In this paper, variable weight theory and set pair analysis (SPA) theory are applied to comprehensive evaluation of power quality. Among existing comprehensive evaluation methods of power quality, the problems about index uncertainty and imbalance case are less considered. The application of variable weight SPA, for ensuring identical discrepancy contrary (IDC) of unsure system, effectively reduces the complication of assessment process. Variable weight SPA uses the hybrid model of variable weight to modify power quality indices vector, and the final weights of indices could be determined. Then it takes advantage of new weight vector to compute the relativity coefficient of power quality assessment points. Finally the levels of power quality assessment points are assessed by their relativity coefficient. The results of the simulation show that the method used to carry out comprehensive evaluation of power quality is simple, and the classification is detailed. This method could effectively decrease the impact on index uncertainty to assessment results.

The issue of power quality in the distribution system is always in sense of the concern. With the high penetration of distributed generation (DG) currently, it tends to be more complicated. This paper presents a new approach to evaluate impacts of the DG on power quality of the distribution network. In the process an objective function will be modeled, which will be solved by the optimization toolbox, in order to calculate the result for the evaluating grade. Furthermore, the results of the overall evaluation will be given via the eigenvalue weighted method. The power quality ranking of each feeder with the distributed generators in the distribution network will be apparent with the given weight of influence caused by DGs divided in forms of energy resource.

Due to the complexity of power systems combined with other factors such as increasing susceptibility of equipment, power quality (PQ) is apt to waver. With electricity in growing demand, low PQ is on the rise. the method of resolve those problem about power quality must be considered. In accordance with the familiar PQ problem, such as voltage sag, voltage swell, short interruption of supply voltage, harmonic suppression and short circuit fault. Basing on the H bridge cascade connection method, this paper design a new type regulator for the multiple objective control. Through the simulation software of PSCAD/EMTDC, the device can resume the voltage and restrain the harmonic dynamically and effectively, when there are voltage disturbances in the power system side. This device also could confine the short circuit current to a supportable level, when there is short circuit fault in the load side.
