Transformer-based large vision model for universal structural damage segmentation

Current structural damage segmentation models are often trained based on substantial pixel-level labels for specific structural components and damage types. To address this issue, this paper establishes a transformer-based large vision model for universal structural damage segmentation, incorporating a pre-trained transformer-based frozen backbone and a fine-tuned CNN-based segmentation head. A synthetic loss function of correlation loss and contrastive loss is proposed. A self-supervised correlation learning procedure is designed to ensure cross-level feature alignment. The contrastive loss across student-teacher networks is designed to learn intra-instance similarity and inter-instance separability. A contrastive learning strategy is employed to fine-tune the segmentation head by exponential moving average with momentum updating. The proposed method is validated on a multi-scale image dataset for cable-supported bridges, concrete bridges, and post-earthquake buildings. The recognition accuracy, generalization ability, robustness under complex background, and superiority to conventional supervised and unsupervised segmentation models are demonstrated. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Prefabricated shear walls are currently widely applied in mid-to-high-rise structures. As a new type of structural form of assembled shear walls, the ring connection assembled concrete shear wall has clear mechanical mechanism, easy construction and better performance and other significant advantages, which are gradually being applied in actual engineering. However, few systematic studies are carried on this new type of shear wall structure, and a complete theoretical system for guiding the design could not be given, especially in terms of mechanical mechanism and seismic performance, more detailed research work is needed. This paper uses numerical simulation as the main method to study the influence of different design variables such as shear span ratio, buckle size, axial compression ratio on the mechanical properties of the connection area in shear wall and the overall seismic performance of the structure. In this way, the theoretical basis for further optimizing the structural performance of the shear wall connection with ring connection. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Compared with traditional financing mode of construction, public-private-partnership (PPP) mode has the great opportunity that private enterprises develop rapidly and solved the shortcomings that the amount of infrastructure investment is large and governments lack funds. Thus PPP mode is being adapted extensively. The keys to successfully implement PPP mode are effectively identifying and analyzing risks in PPP projects, in order to achieve the risk management of PPP projects. The research is aimed to establish a risk analysis model of PPP projects combining the sensitive analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. Then it uses a real case "Shijiazhuang International Exhibition Center" to verify this model and proposes strategies to deal with the main risks. The result of this case study proved effectiveness of the proposed model, which can be used in further risk analysis of PPP projects. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) has taken advantages of the fiber reinforcement and resin matrix, possessing excellent mechanical properties and corrosive resistances, even in harsh environments. The lack of the knowledge of the durability performances of FRPs in various environmental conditions and the related degradation mechanisms of FRPs leads to significantly conservative design. Water ingress plays a critical effect on the durability of FRP, due to susceptibility of the bond between the fibers and resin matrices. In the present paper, molecular dynamics technique was used to model the moisture effect on the fiber-resin bond. The bonding performances of the epoxy on carbon fibers under dry and wet conditions were simulated. Free energy profiles were calculated to quantify interfacial adhesion. As shown from the decline of binding free energy, the water ingress led to remarkable deterioration of the fiber bonding to the resin matrix. The study is expected to be helpful for both the development of durable FRPs, and to predict the service life of a FRP subjected to hydrothermal aging accurately. Reactive powder concrete (RPC) is an advanced generation of concrete having superior qualities than traditional types of concretes. However, fire may severely affect its quality and strength. In this paper mechanical properties of RPC containing polypropylene (PP) fibers were studied experimentally after exposure to high temperature. The quality of concrete was also assessed by non-destructive testing (NDTs) such as ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) method and resonance frequency (RF) method. dynamic elastic modulus has been determined by available equation from NDTs measurements. The results show that an initial increase in strength was observed up to 300℃. However, a gradual decrease in strength occurred for temperature higher than 300℃. Constitutive relationships have been proposed for structural strength assessment through NDTs. © 2018 Czech Technical University in Prague. All rights reserved.

Ice action is the primary factor that affecting the navigation of icebreaker in the ice area. The ice-breaking load also directly impacts on the construction and design of the icebreaker. Therefore, reasonable calculation of ice-breaking load has become the most important issue at present. Focusing on ice cover, this paper presented a theoretical model for calculating the ice-breaking resistance of the icebreaker. The presented model is based on the combination of semi-infinite beam and infinite beam along and perpendicular to the moving direction of the icebreaker on elastic foundation, respectively. The influence factors such as buoyancy and ice failure criterion are considered in this model. Then, authors compared the theoretical calculation formula with the existing empirical formula and theoretical formula to verify the feasibility of the presented calculation model in this paper. This model can provide theoretical reference for the design and construction of polar region icebreakers. © 2019, Lulea University of Technology. All rights reserved.

Externally wrapped fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) confinement has proven effective in improving the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. However, existing seismic design recommendations are primarily based on quasi-static cyclic test results applied along the principal axis of the column section, which cannot accurately reflect the true characteristics of earthquakes. In this study, two 1/2-scale FRP-retrofitted rectangular RC columns were subjected to shaking table tests with ground motion input directions at 30° and 60° to the strong axis of the cross-section, respectively. The seismic performance, including damage mode, natural frequency, acceleration, displacement and strain response, torsional effect, and energy dissipation, was thoroughly analyzed. The result found that FRP-retrofitted rectangular RC columns exhibited completely different damage modes under shaking table tests compared to quasi-static loading, from previous ductile flexural failure to unfavorable flexural-shear-torsional failure, with more and wider cracks, more significant deformation, and more severe damages. These findings suggest that conclusions drawn from quasi-static tests tend to overestimate the retrofitting effect of FRP, and retrofitting only the plastic hinge zone of RC columns is insufficient to ensure structural safety, which should be considered in future seismic strengthening design criteria for RC structures. © 2025

Characteristics of aerodynamic force and flow structure behind single box girder under isolated slit control

An isolated slit was placed in a single box girder to obtain passive leading-edge suction and trailing-edge jet flow to control the unsteady aerodynamic force and modify the flow *** Great Belt East Bridge was used as a physical model at a geometric scale of 1:*** tunnel experiments were conducted at an incoming airflow speed of 10 m/s,and the Reynolds number was calculated as 2.3×104 using the test model height and wind *** surface pressure distribution was measured,and the aerodynamic force acting on the test model with and without the isolated slit was calculated by integrating the pressure *** was found that the control using an isolated slit can dramatically decrease the fluctuating surface pressure distribution and aerodynamic *** analysis on the power spectral density of the lift force revealed that the isolated slit accelerated vortex ***,high-speed particle image velocimetry was used to investigate the wake flow structure behind the test model.A vortex separated from the upper surface was pushed to a lower location and the wake flow structure was modified by the isolated slit.A proper orthogonal decomposition(POD)of the flow field showed that the first two POD modes in the controlled case contributed less energy than those in the uncontrolled case,indicating that more energy was transferred to higher modes,and small-scale vortices had more energy.A secondary instability structure was found in the wake flow for a nondimensional jet momentum coefficient J of 0.0667.

Improvement of sludge dewaterability with modified cinder via affecting EPS

The relationship between the improvement of sludge dewaterability and variation of organic matters has been studied in the process of sludge pre-conditioning with modified cinder, especially for extracellular polymeric substances （EPS） in the sludge. During the conditioning process, the decreases of total organic carbon （TOC） and soluble chemical oxygen demand （SCOD） were obviously in the supernatant especially for the acid modified cinder （ACMC）, which could be attributed to the processes of adsorption and sweeping. The reduction of polysaccharide and protein in supernatant indicated that ACMC might adsorb EPS so that the tightly bound EPS （TB-EPS） decreased in sludge. In the case of ACMC addition with 24 g·L^-1, SRF of the sludge decreased from 7.85 × 10^12 m·kg^-1 to 2.06× 10^12 m·kg^-1, and the filter cake moisture decreased from 85% to 60%. The reconstruction of ＂floc mass＂ was confirmed as the main sludge conditioning mechanism. ACMC promoted the dewatering performance through the charge neutralization and adsorption bridging with the negative EPS, and provided firm and dense structure for sludge floc as skeleton builder. The passages for water quick transmitting were built to avoid collapsing during the high-pressure process.
