This paper explores modified strategies for MMH in the subset simulation for reliability assessment in ocean engineering. To improve the sampling efficiency in complex distributions comprising correlated or non-normal variables, this study proposes a modified approach involving a two-stage delayed rejection and an adaptive STD for the proposal distribution based on MMH. The acceptance rate of the candidate sample in two-stage delayed rejection approach is derived based on the reversibility condition of Markov chain to reduce the repeated samples. Additionally, the STD for all accepted samples is used as the STD for the proposal, which dominates the sampling scale and increases the acceptance rate. The Neal’s normal distribution, the Banana-shaped bivariate distribution, and the correlated joint distribution for wind and wave are adopted to study the sampling efficiency and ergodicity for MMHDR, AMMHDR, and AMMHDDR. Furthermore, three sampling algorithms are employed to generate conditional samples for estimating the probabilities of base shear failure and system failure in jacket platforms. The results indicate that the AMMHDDR can enhance the sampling efficiency, especially for complex distributions with correlated variables. Also, the AMMHDDR can be used in SS to improve the accuracy and reduce the variation when estimating failure probabilities of offshore structures. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Prestressed shear key splice connections are used for the assembly of prefabricated foundation modules in wind turbine towers. This study proposed a simplified section analysis to estimate the flexural moment strength of the shear key splice connections. The proposed method considered the structural deformation and unbonded prestressing tendon effect. Further, to investigate the effects of loading type, initial prestressing force, and shear span-to-depth ratio on the structural performance of the shear key splice connections, finite element analysis was performed on the precast segmental beams using the shear key splice connections. The section analysis results were compared to the finite element analysis results of the precast segmental beams under various initial prestressing forces, and the section analysis results agreed with the finite element analysis results. The shear span-to-depth ratio significantly affected the structural performance of the shear key splice connections. As the shear span-to-depth ratio decreased, the shear resistance increased because the failure mode changed from flexural failure due to the separated shear keys to direct shear failure of the shear keys. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Comparative study and optimal selection for different cable-stiffened latticed shells

The cable-stiffened latticed shell can be constructed in varied structural forms by diverse types of single-layer latticed shells and cable-strut systems. So, to provide references for model selection, this paper studied the efficient combination of latticed shells and cable-strut systems in different boundary conditions and proposed a performance evaluation method. The general modeling process was illustrated firstly, and several new structural forms with folded curved surfaces were proposed. Then, based on the improved equilibrium matrix theory, the force-finding analysis was carried out for the initial state, which can guarantee actual mechanical properties in the numerical model. Thus, the overall stiffness, the bearing capacity, and the cable reinforcement effect were obtained through the nonlinear stability analysis. And for the optimal selection from multiple structural forms, AHP-TOPSIS was used to judge the latticed shell system for the first time. The comprehensive structural performances were evaluated and ranked by this multi-attribute decision-making method. Finally, the results showed that the complicated cable-strut system could not necessarily lead to higher structural efficiency. Regardless of the cable-strut layouts, the spherical cable-stiffened latticed shell had a high bearing capacity when the ribbed grid was adopted. For the cylindrical structure, the folded latticed shell divided by orthogonal grids maximized the role of in-plane cables and was considered the best choice. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

To improve the computational efficiencies of the real-space orbital-free density functional theory, this work develops a new single-grid solver by directly providing the closed-form solution to the inner iteration and using an improved bisection method to accelerate the line search process in the outer iteration, and extended the single-grid solver to a multi-grid solver. Numerical examples show that the proposed single-grid solver can improve the computational efficiencies by two orders of magnitude comparing with the methods in the literature and the multi-grid solver can improve the computational efficiencies even once for the cases where high-resolution electron densities are needed. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

Coastal bridges, as vital components of transportation networks, are vulnerable to damage from successive earthquake-tsunami (EQ-TS) events in rapidly developing coastal hazard-prone cities. Understanding how these bridges perform under the combined effects of earthquakes and tsunamis is crucial. Though studies have investigated coastal buildings facing these hazards, there is limited research on bridges experiencing extreme EQ-TS events, especially on the generation of load sequences, dynamic structural responses, and cumulative damage assessment. To overcome these limitations, this study aims to thoroughly examine the dynamic behavior of reinforced concrete coastal bridges subjected to successive EQ-TS hazards. To generate practical sequential EQ-TS loads, records of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and resulting tsunami heights, which are calculated based on the earthquake magnitude and epicentral distance, are utilized for analyses. The tsunami wave load time series for each earthquake record is created using a high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics model. Nonlinear time-history analyses are then performed for the bridge model in OpenSees under the synthetic EQ-TS sequences, quantifying structural responses and cumulative damage. Moreover, the comparative results of structural performance under single and successive hazard scenarios are presented and discussed. Results indicate that successive EQ-TS hazards not only induce much larger structural responses as compared to a single EQ hazard, but also produce considerable residual displacements for both bearings and decks. The wave height is more appropriate than the peak ground acceleration as an individual intensity measure for predicting the cumulative damage of bridges under cascading EQ-TS hazards. Relying solely on peak responses for assessing the dynamic performance of piers under successive EQ-TS sequences may underestimate the actual damage. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In the long-term service of life, structural columns may experience mechanical performance degradation due to environmental erosion, various hazards, and functional modifications. This study proposes a novel concrete column reinforcement method utilizing square corrugated steel jackets as external confinement components, which significantly enhances both bearing capacity and ductility of original members. To investigate the mechanical performance improvement mechanisms and load-carry mode, 10 axially compressed short column specimens were designed. Detailed analyses were conducted surrounding the effects of connection methods for corrugated sheets, corrugated steel thickness, and damage levels on load-displacement curves, as well as stress and strain development patterns. A computational model for ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced sections was established. key findings include: (1) The use of corrugated steel sleeves can enhance the ultimate bearing capacity of the original short columns by 34.6% to 67.3%. (2) Considering that the confinement effect of square sleeves is not optimal, it is more material-efficient to use thinner corrugated steel plates to achieve similar results. (3) There is no significant difference in the effects of connection types on mechanical performance. (4) The cracking and softening of damaged concrete can enhance the confinement effect in corrugated steel-strengthened reinforced concrete columns. (5) The confined concrete strength model can be used to accurately predict the ultimate bearing capacity. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The non-metallic lightning strike protection film covering carbon fiber reinforced polymers(NM-LSP covering CFRP)can reduce the weight and thus the fuel consumption of aircraft by replacing the traditional lightning strike protection(LSP)*** the present study,in order to study the environmental influence of utilizing NM-LSP covering CFRP in an aircraft elevator,a new elevator was designed and manufactured,replacing the aluminium net and glass fiber reinforced polymers(GFRP)with NM-LSP covering CFRP,with the same mechanical and LSP abilities.A comparative life cycle assessment was conducted between the two kinds of aircraft elevators,including material extraction,transportation,elevator manufacturing phase,service phase,and end-of-life ***,the environmental impacts of producing two LSP materials were compared by considering the environmental effects of different buy-to-fly ratios and recycling strategies on the production of aluminium *** analysis indicates that the new elevator achieved reduction for all the environmental impact categories used,such as human toxicity potential and marine aquatic ecotoxicity potential(3.83%and 3.20%reduction).Furthermore,it is found that the service phase makes the greatest contribution to the environmental impact of the elevators under *** recycling is excluded,NM-LSP covering CFRP is more environmentally friendly than the traditional *** the same time,CFRP prepreg and electricity from the production of NM-LSP covering CFRP contribute to a higher environmental impact compared to the NM-LSP *** the sensitivity analysis,it is believed that NM-LSP covering CFRP can reduce environmental impact compared with traditional LSP materials.

During the long service period of the transmission tower, the severe environment, material aging and fatigue effects result in the damage accumulation and resistance fading of the transmission tower, which even lead to the structural failure. In this paper, a stochastic subspace-based damage detection algorithm combined with statistical model is proposed for the damage identification of transmission tower structures through processing and analysing its vibration signals. Based on the structural modal parameters identified from the structural vibration response, the nominal modal parameters are defined. Considering that the Hankel matrixes constructed by the system observability matrix and the system output covariance matrix have the same kernel space, the damage index sensitive to the modal parameters is constructed. In the manuscript, firstly, the damage index establishment method and process of the algorithm are presented;and then the vibration data of transmission tower structure simulation under different damage conditions are obtained through numerical simulations;finally, above data are analysed to obtain the damage identification results of transmission tower. The results show that the method proposed in this work can effectively identify the local damage of transmission tower structure. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

No study has been reported on fire performance of steel tube confined reinforced concrete (STCRC) columns. Hence fire behaviour of circular STCRC columns is investigated in this paper. Fire tests and numerical studies of circular STCRC columns are briefly introduced. Five full-scale specimens, including four circular STCRC columns and one CFST column, were tested to failure under combined thermal and mechanical loading. Temperatures across the section, displacement versus time curves and fire resistance of these columns were monitored and recorded. A finite element (FE) model was developed using the program ABAQUS, and validated against the test results. Based on test and FE results, a simplified design method was proposed for predicting fire resistance of circular STCRC columns exposed to ISO 834 standard fire condition. It was found that load ratio has significant influence on the fire resistance of circular STCRC columns. Compared with CFST columns and reinforced concrete columns, circular STCRC columns have higher fire resistance than the former and lower fire resistance than the latter. Structural stochastic responses determination via a sample-based stochastic finite element method

This paper presents a new stochastic finite element method for computing structural stochastic responses. The method provides a new expansion of stochastic response and decouples the stochastic response into a combination of a series of deterministic responses with random variable coefficients. A dedicated iterative algorithm is proposed to determine the deterministic responses and corresponding random variable coefficients one by one. The algorithm computes the deterministic responses and corresponding random variable coefficients in their individual space and is insensitive to stochastic dimensions, thus it can be applied to high dimensional stochastic problems readily without extra difficulties. More importantly, the deterministic responses can be computed efficiently by use of existing Finite Element Method (FEM) solvers, thus the proposed method can be easy to embed into existing FEM structural analysis softwares. Three practical examples, including low-dimensional and high-dimensional stochastic problems, are given to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method.
