Small-diameter round timber is a forestry by-product mainly from thinning of the artificial forest. It is not suitable for direct use as structural members due to the low quality. To make use of the by-product, a built-up stud fabricated with small-diameter round timber was proposed in this paper and was intended to be employed in a shear wall for light wood frame construction. The load-carrying capacity of the built-up stud was investigated experimentally by testing of the specimens under axial compression and testing of the specimens under eccentric compression, respectively. To predict the load-carrying capacity considering buckling, the equation for the modified slenderness ratio of the stud was derived. The predicted load-carrying capacity using the modified slenderness ratio correlated with the test very well. Some suggestions were then given to enhance the load-carrying capacity of the built-up stud. The study provides reference for incorporating the small-diameter round timber into a shear wall of light wood frame construction and thus promotes the application of small-diameter round timber as structural members.

A suit of real ground motion records are selected as inputs. The empirical thresholds provided by the Chinese seismic design code are adopted as the definitions of the concerned limit states. Then the seismic fragility analysis is conducted for the three-story, five-story and ten-story RC frames with and without infilled masonry walls. The limit state failure probabilities and the damage state failure probabilities conditioned on the frequent earthquake, the design-based earthquake and the major earthquake are calculated. As compared to the results from the RC bare frames we can find that the infilled masonry walls can effectively reduce the failure probability of the RC frame structures under various earthquakes and can consequently promote the safety levels against earthquake.

As an effective base isolation device, friction pendulum bearings (FPB) were finely modeled and applied in the K8 single-layer reticulated domes in this paper. First, influence of friction pendulum bearings was analyzed on the seismic performance of single-layer spherical reticulated shell from two aspects, the peak acceleration and earthquake energy. Moreover, the seismic performance of structure with FPB was studied under different ground motion intensities from three aspects, the dynamic stress, the nodal acceleration, and the vertical relative displacement of nodes. The result showed that the peak vertical acceleration was reduced and a part of earthquake energy was isolated by using FPBs. Under the different ground motion intensities, the seismic effect of a K8 single-layer spherical reticulated shell structure with FPB was similar.

In this paper, the mechanical property of damaged concrete after impact was investigated. Firstly, the specimen was crushed by using drop hammer impact test machine in order to cause initial damage. Then compression-after-impact tests were carried out to examine and compare the damage responses of the specimens, and some stress-strain curves of the specimens under different damage degrees were obtained. Test parameters, such as the strength grade, height of the fall and drop weight were studied. The damage behaviors of the 24 tested specimens with the acquired UT (ultrasonic test) data were analyzed. The experiment results indicate that using UT to test the damage of concrete is highly sensitive;Concrete elastic modulus and compressive strength after impact are reduced. Brittle fracture of the concrete specimen after impact is remarkable.
