This paper reports testing and numerical modeling program on high strength concrete-filled S700 cold-formed high strength steel (HCFHSS) built-up box-section stub columns to investigate their cross-sectional behavior and resistance. Twelve stub column tests were performed on HCFHSS built-up box-sections designed with three grades of high strength concretes, i.e. C60, C90 and C120. The ultimate loads, axial load–end shortening curves and failure modes of all test specimens were reported. The numerical program was then performed, in which stub column finite element models were developed and validated against the experimental observations, accounting for the confinement effect. Parametric studies incorporating 160 finite models were carried out for generating further numerical data. The test and numerical results were used to evaluate the applicability of the existing European Code (EC4), American Specification (AISC) and Chinese standard (GB) to HCFHSS built-up box-sections. The EC4 yielded overly conservative yet consistent predictions with a mean overprediction of 32 %, while the AISC design provisions were generally conservative by 26 % on average and exhibited notable inaccuracy, particularly for slender sections. In contrast, the GB design provisions provided the most accurate but unsafe predictions. To address the shortcomings, modified design provisions were thus proposed for HCFHSS built-up box-section stub columns and shown to yield improved design accuracy and consistency. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Externally wrapped fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) confinement has proven effective in improving the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. However, existing seismic design recommendations are primarily based on quasi-static cyclic test results applied along the principal axis of the column section, which cannot accurately reflect the true characteristics of earthquakes. In this study, two 1/2-scale FRP-retrofitted rectangular RC columns were subjected to shaking table tests with ground motion input directions at 30° and 60° to the strong axis of the cross-section, respectively. The seismic performance, including damage mode, natural frequency, acceleration, displacement and strain response, torsional effect, and energy dissipation, was thoroughly analyzed. The result found that FRP-retrofitted rectangular RC columns exhibited completely different damage modes under shaking table tests compared to quasi-static loading, from previous ductile flexural failure to unfavorable flexural-shear-torsional failure, with more and wider cracks, more significant deformation, and more severe damages. These findings suggest that conclusions drawn from quasi-static tests tend to overestimate the retrofitting effect of FRP, and retrofitting only the plastic hinge zone of RC columns is insufficient to ensure structural safety, which should be considered in future seismic strengthening design criteria for RC structures. © 2025

Fatigue performance of kiloton CFRP cable after hygrothermal and freeze–thaw cycles

The application of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) cable with light weight and high strength can improve the service performance of bridge structures in plateau harsh service environments. But the performance evolution behavior of CFRP cable under complicated service environments of fatigue load, hygrothermal and freeze–thaw cycles is unknown. In this paper, the tensile fatigue performance of CFRP rods used for cable before and after hygrothermal and freeze–thaw cycles is investigated experimentally. The tensile fatigue and residual tensile performances of kiloton CFRP cable are verified after hygrothermal and freeze–thaw cycles. Optical frequency domain reflectometry technology is employed to monitor the stiffness degradation of CFRP cables during fatigue loading. The results indicate that the hygrothermal and freeze–thaw cycles release the residual stress within CFRP rod, which improves the fatigue resistance. By contrast, the hygrothermal and freeze–thaw cycles have no significant effect on stiffness degradation of CFRP rod. The kiloton CFRP cable can withstand 2,000 k cycles of tensile fatigue after hygrothermal and freeze–thaw cycles, and the stiffness degradation of CFRP cable is negligible. The residual tensile bearing capacity of CFRP cable after fatigue is 10,731 kN, corresponding to a residual strength retention rate of 105 %. These findings provide essential validation data for the application of kiloton CFRP cables in bridge construction.

Steel-recycled aggregate concrete composite beams (SRACCBs) are preferred components for the recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) application. Due to their superior spanning ability and load-bearing capacity, steel-concrete composite beams (SCCBs) are typically more slender than traditional beam components, which makes them more sensitive to concrete shrinkage and creep. Furthermore, the incorporation of recycled aggregate (RA) significantly increases the shrinkage and creep deformation of the concrete. Therefore, the long-term properties of RAC significantly affect the application of SRACCBs. In fact, the shrinkage and creep of RAC are closely related to the boundary conditions, and the sealing effect of the steel deck and decorative layer can directly influence the long-term deformation of SCCBs. However, relevant research is currently unavailable. In this context, a 500-day long-term performance test of continuous SRACCB (4 m × 2 spans) was conducted in this paper. The test quantified the effects of incorporating RA and installing decorative layers on the mid-span deflection and end relative slip of the SRACCBs. By considering the cracking, shrinkage, and creep of RAC and long-term slip at the interface, a Direct Stiffness Method Finite Element Model (DSMFEM) for SRACCBs was established. Test results indicate that using 100 % RA can increase the mid-span deflection of the specimen by 27.9 % and the relative slip by 54.8 %; a 90-day installation of the decoration layer can lead to a 16.3 % decrease in the mid-span deflection and an 11.5 % decrease in the relative slip. The verification results of 12 sets of experimental data indicate that the proposed DSMFEM has high computational efficiency and can effectively predict the deflection and relative slip of simply-supported and continuous SCCBs. The maximum error in predicting the final mid-span deflection is 6.8 % for specimens with long-term loads and 18.4 % for specimens without loads.

This paper presents a study on the numerical simulation methods and dent-model of circular steel tubes under transverse low-velocity impact. The study uses drop-hammer impact tests, numerical simulations, and theoretical analysis to develop a precise simulation method. It looks at how factors like mesh size, material properties, and simplifications in the impactor model affect key mechanical behaviors, such as failure modes, impact force, and displacement. A scientific simulation method of circular steel tube under low velocity transverse impact was proposed. The numerical simulation demonstrates close agreement with experimental observations in characterizing the dynamic response and failure mechanisms of circular steel-tube specimens. Critical parameters including peak impact force and displacement exhibit deviations below 10 %, verified the accuracy of the numerical model. On this foundation, a study was conducted on the cross-sectional dent-model of a circular steel tube at the impact position. In the study, the influence of hammer shape, impact velocity, circular steel pipe span, wall thickness, and diameter on it was explored. A theoretical dent-model of the cross-section at the impact position of the circular steel tube was established. Accurate estimation of the top and bottom concave displacement of the circular steel pipe at the impact position has been achieved, providing theoretical reference for structural safety assessment and accident prevention in practical engineering.

Study on Water Absorptivity and Frost Resistance Performance of Self-ignition Coal Gangue Autoclaved Aerated Concrete

Self-ignition coal gangue (SCG) used as one of precursors to fabricate aerated autoclaved concrete (AAC). Aiming at studying water absorptivity and frost resistance performance of self-ignition coal gangue aerated autoclaved concrete (SCGAAC), three-period water absorbing tests and freezing-thawing tests were carried out and the corresponding results were recorded and analyzed. In order to modify the water absorptivity of SCGAAC, foam stabilizer was applied to adjust pore structure while calcium stearate was expected to change hydrophilic feature of CG. It was demonstrated that the compressive strength of SCGAAC containing foam stabilizer or calcium stearate declined at different levels, although the porosity became lower slightly. For water absorptivity, foam stabilizer failed to decrease the water content at any period and even increased water absorbing rates. Calcium stearate controlled water absorbing rate successfully but the ultimate water content hardly reduced. All of the SCGAAC samples exhibited intact appearance after 50 freezing-thawing cycles and showed excellent frost resistance performance. Shaking table test on 1000kV frame by considering coupling effect of transmission lines under longitudinal excitations

To figure out the influence mechanism of the dynamic coupling effect of transmission lines on seismic responses of the 1000 kV outgoing line frame under longitudinal excitations and discuss the influence of sag-span ratios of transmission lines, shaking table tests were performed on a single-span 1000 kV outgoing line frame by considering the dynamic coupling effect of transmission lines with a scale factor of 1:***, transmission lines were simulated by the massless springs with equivalent dynamic stiffness. Test results indicate that the seismic responses of 1000 kV frame are reduced by the strong dynamic coupling effect of transmission lines;with the decrease in sag-span ratio, the energy dissipated by the suspended system increases and the elastic constraints of transmission lines on the frame enhance, resulting in further reducing the seismic responses of 1000 kV frame. Furthermore, the results of numerical reconstruction analysis of the experiments indicate that the finite element analysis can simulate the dynamic coupling effect between transmission lines and 1000 kV frame very well. © 2020, Editorial Office of China Civil Engineering Journal. Effects of pure carbonation on pore structure and water permeability of white cement mortars

The effects of carbonation on cement-based materials have drawn much attention because of its profound influences on durability performance of concrete structures. Most accelerated carbonation in lab is conducted at RH 50%–70%, which also dries out cement-based materials. The introduced drying action changes pore structure significantly, making the effects of carbonation obscure. To clarify the effects of pure carbonation, water permeability and related micro-structural characteristics are measured on mature mortars, which have been carbonated at water-saturated state. It is found that after carbonation, the porosity of mortars decreases slightly, with finer overall pore structure and lower characteristic pore size. The water permeability also decreases by roughly 40% on average. Based on the pore size distribution curves obtained through the low-field proton nuclear magnetic resonance technique, water permeability is predicted by the Katz-Thompson and Kozeny-Carman theories with satisfactory accuracy. The decrease of water permeability after carbonation agrees well with the reduced characteristic pore length, which quantitatively verifies the observed refinement of nanoscale pore structure due to pure carbonation.
