The rapid construction nature and outstanding self-centring ability make the post-tensioned precast segmental (PTPS) bridge pier a promising alternative to traditional cast-in-place piers. In this paper, PTPS piers reinforced with both steel and fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) bars were numerically analyzed. This type of pier is referred to as a hybrid bars reinforced PTPS bridge pier in this paper. The steel bars which continuously cross the segment joints (referred to as ED bars) were expected to improve the energy dissipation ability of the PTPS piers, while the FRP bars were expected to increase the post-yield stiffness and to decrease the residual displacement. Monotonic and cyclic analyses on hybrid bars reinforced PTPS piers were subsequently conducted. Three parameters were investigated, namely, the mechanical properties of FRP bars, the FRP bar reinforcement ratio and the proportion of FRP bars to ED bars. According to the analysis results in this study, the FRP bars are effective on improving the self-centring ability of the hybrid bars reinforced PTPS piers. In seasonally frozen regions,freezing-and-thawing action is the main cause responsible for the destruction of canals,which is closely linked to the temperature gradient and water *** investigate the behaviour of soils under freezing-and-thawing actions,many numerical models have been established that consider the important coupling of moisture transport and temperature evolution;but they contain excessive parameters,some of which are rather difficult to *** on the well-known Harlan's theory,a simple moisture-heat coupling model was recently proposed to quantify the coupled moisture-heat transport performance of soils in terms of the central temperature and *** mathematical module of COMSOL Multiphysics was further employed to solve the governing equations *** validate our model,a thorough experimental scheme was carried out in our *** measured temperature distribution was found to be consistent with the predicted results.

Compared with traditional financing mode of construction, public-private-partnership (PPP) mode has the great opportunity that private enterprises develop rapidly and solved the shortcomings that the amount of infrastructure investment is large and governments lack funds. Thus PPP mode is being adapted extensively. The keys to successfully implement PPP mode are effectively identifying and analyzing risks in PPP projects, in order to achieve the risk management of PPP projects. The research is aimed to establish a risk analysis model of PPP projects combining the sensitive analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. Then it uses a real case "Shijiazhuang International Exhibition Center" to verify this model and proposes strategies to deal with the main risks. The result of this case study proved effectiveness of the proposed model, which can be used in further risk analysis of PPP projects. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Externally wrapped fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) confinement has proven effective in improving the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. However, existing seismic design recommendations are primarily based on quasi-static cyclic test results applied along the principal axis of the column section, which cannot accurately reflect the true characteristics of earthquakes. In this study, two 1/2-scale FRP-retrofitted rectangular RC columns were subjected to shaking table tests with ground motion input directions at 30° and 60° to the strong axis of the cross-section, respectively. The seismic performance, including damage mode, natural frequency, acceleration, displacement and strain response, torsional effect, and energy dissipation, was thoroughly analyzed. The result found that FRP-retrofitted rectangular RC columns exhibited completely different damage modes under shaking table tests compared to quasi-static loading, from previous ductile flexural failure to unfavorable flexural-shear-torsional failure, with more and wider cracks, more significant deformation, and more severe damages. These findings suggest that conclusions drawn from quasi-static tests tend to overestimate the retrofitting effect of FRP, and retrofitting only the plastic hinge zone of RC columns is insufficient to ensure structural safety, which should be considered in future seismic strengthening design criteria for RC structures. © 2025

The present study investigated experimentally effects of temperature on drying shrinkage of concrete in different water cement ratio and containing mineral admixture. Concrete was exposed to a controlled environment of 20±1°C, 35±1°C, 50±1°C, and 60% ± 5 RH, respectively. The drying shrinkage of concretes with water cement ratio of 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 were evaluated. The resuluts showed that with the increase of temperature from 20 °C to 50 °C, the influence of water cement ratio on drying shrinkage of concrete was gradually weakened. The shrinkage strain of concretes with replacement of cement by 20% of ground granulated blast- furnace slag (GGBS), 10% of silica fume (SF), and 20% of fly ash (FA)were measured, respectively. Test results showed that GGBS had a little impact on drying shrinkage of concrete;Silica fume could increase the drying shrinkage of concrete significantly in the early and later ages, especially when concrete was subjected to high temperature;Fly ash reduced drying shrinkage in early ages and increased drying shrinkage of concrete in the later ages. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The distribution and fluctuation of wind load on large-span dry coal sheds are complicated. Wind load on typical shape of roofs can be sometimes determined based on the wind tunnel tests carried out on roofs of similar shape. To expand the application scope of the test data, Generalized Regression Neural Network (GRNN) is introduced. The prediction models on large-span dry coal are given, where the wind load is expressed by eight parameters: mean, RMS, skewness, kurtosis of wind pressure coefficients, three auto-spectral parameters (including descendent slope in high frequency range, peak reduced spectrum and reduced peak frequency) and coherence exponent for cross-spectra. Cross validation and trails are carried out to determine the parameter in the GRNN model. Further, the wind load prediction is applied on a dry coal shed shell. The wind-induced responses are calculated and compared with the results of wind tunnel tests, with extremely close result. Therefore, it can be concluded that GRNN is feasible in predicting wind load on roof structures. Copyright © 2017 ISEC Press.

Reactive powder concrete (RPC) is an advanced generation of concrete having superior qualities than traditional types of concretes. However, fire may severely affect its quality and strength. In this paper mechanical properties of RPC containing polypropylene (PP) fibers were studied experimentally after exposure to high temperature. The quality of concrete was also assessed by non-destructive testing (NDTs) such as ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) method and resonance frequency (RF) method. dynamic elastic modulus has been determined by available equation from NDTs measurements. The results show that an initial increase in strength was observed up to 300℃. However, a gradual decrease in strength occurred for temperature higher than 300℃. Constitutive relationships have been proposed for structural strength assessment through NDTs. © 2018 Czech Technical University in Prague. All rights reserved.

Ice action is the primary factor that affecting the navigation of icebreaker in the ice area. The ice-breaking load also directly impacts on the construction and design of the icebreaker. Therefore, reasonable calculation of ice-breaking load has become the most important issue at present. Focusing on ice cover, this paper presented a theoretical model for calculating the ice-breaking resistance of the icebreaker. The presented model is based on the combination of semi-infinite beam and infinite beam along and perpendicular to the moving direction of the icebreaker on elastic foundation, respectively. The influence factors such as buoyancy and ice failure criterion are considered in this model. Then, authors compared the theoretical calculation formula with the existing empirical formula and theoretical formula to verify the feasibility of the presented calculation model in this paper. This model can provide theoretical reference for the design and construction of polar region icebreakers. © 2019, Lulea University of Technology. All rights reserved.

To revise the national Code for Design of Timber structures GB 50005-2003, the methods for calculation of the stability coefficient in timber design codes of various countries were compared and analysed. Considering the characteristics of modern wood products, new and unified equations for calculation of the stability coefficient applicable to members made of various wood products were proposed, in which the traditional treatments of stability in the China national timber design code were kept, giving the newly issued Standard for Design of Timber structures GB 50005-2017 continuity and consistency. The constants in the unified equations were determined through regression with respect to different wood products, and the error in calculation of the stability coefficient was basically within 10%. This study facilitates reasonable design of members made of imported wood products in addition to the domestic timber. © WCTE 2018 Committee.
