Since the current rate control schemes in H.264 do not present the capability of efficient GOP-level bit allocation, the video quality varies greatly for sequences with the scene change or the scene complexity varying from one GOP to another. To overcome the limitation, we propose a novel rate control scheme based on incremental PID algorithm. The incremental PID algorithm is introduced to minimize video quality variations in GOP-level bit allocation. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed rate control scheme, without expensive computational complexity added, decreases the average video quality variations by 15.07%.

Recently just noticeable distortion (JND) has been highly successful in improving the video coding efficiency. Foveated JND (FJND) is an extension of the JND by further exploiting the human vision characteristic. However, there is a challenge to quickly estimate the foveation point and accurately combine the foveation factor with the spatio-temporal JND model of DCT domain for FJND. In this paper, a new FJND model in DCT domain is proposed, which adaptively searches the foveation point by exploiting the property of image signature and builds a foveation model based on the contrast threshold. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposal model remarkably reduces the complexity of FJND in searching foveation. In a number of video coding experiments, we find that, in terms of coding efficiency, the proposed perceptual coding based on FJND for multiview video coding (MVC) significantly outperforms the existing algorithm.

A reference frame selection algorithm was proposed to fast determine the reference frames required by the current macroblock, which can avoid redundant reference frames. This algorithm can utilize the texture characteristic of sequence to estimate the possible number of reference frames, and further determine the best reference frame of 16 × 16, 8 × 8 and 4 × 4 modes according to the motion information and the monotony of RDO among different reference frames. So the likely reference frames of other modes may be adaptively chosen according to the correlation of reference frame selection with the above modes. The results showed that it can save about 30% of encoding time while maintaining nearly unchanged PSNR and bit-rate.

In order to measure the residual stress of thin film, an automatic measurement system based on single-beam light lever method was designed in this paper. The total system, composed of light path system, laser system, sample support system and speckle tracking measurement system, measured the variation of the sample's radius before and after depositing the thin film, which would be used to calculate the film residual stress based on Stoney formula. Taking optical concave reflectors with given radius as the samples, this method belonging to nondestructive test was compared to the contour method, and the results shown that the measuring precision of radius was within ± 2%, which was better than the contour method. In addition, the system was relatively simple, effective and low cost and the radius of curvature measurement range could be as low as 0.2 meter.
