This paper proposes a novel approach to search for the optimal combination of a measure function and feature weights using an evolutionary algorithm. Different combinations of measure function and feature weights are used to construct the searching space. Genetic Algorithm is applied as an evolutionary algorithm to search for the candidate solution, in which the classification rate of the K-Nearest Neighbor classifier is used as the fitness value. Three experiments are carefully designed to show the attractiveness of our approach. In the first experiment, an artificial data set is constructed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach by testing whether it could find the optimal combination of measure function and feature weights which satisfy the data set. In the second experiment, data sets from the University of California at Irvine are employed to verify the general applicability of the method. Finally, a prostate cancer data set is used to show its effectiveness on high-dimensional data. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Previous work using topic model for statistical machine translation (SMT) explore topic information at the word level. However, SMT has been advanced from word-based paradigm to phrase/rule-based paradigm. We therefore propose a topic similarity model to exploit topic information at the synchronous rule level for hierarchical phrase-based translation. We associate each synchronous rule with a topic distribution, and select desirable rules according to the similarity of their topic distributions with given documents. We show that our model significantly improves the translation performance over the baseline on NIST Chinese-to-English translation experiments. Our model also achieves a better performance and a faster speed than previous approaches that work at the word level. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Most software transactional memories employ optimistic concurrency control. A pessimistic semantics, however, is not without its benefits: its programming model is often much simpler to reason about and supports the execution of irreversible operations. We present a programming model that supports both optimistic and pessimistic concurrency control semantics. Our pessimistic transactions, guaranteed transactions (gatomics), afford a stronger semantics than that typically employed by pessimistic transactions by guaranteeing run once execution and safe encapsulation of the privatisation and publication idioms. We describe our mixed mode transactional programming language by giving a small step operational semantics. Using our semantics and their derived schedules of actions (reads and writes) we show that conflicting transactions (atomics) and gatomics are serialisable. We then go on to define schedules of actions in the form of Java's memory model (JMM) and show that the same properties that held under our restrictive memory model also hold under our modified JMM. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The goal of semantic dependency parsing is to build dependency structure and lab.l semantic relation between a head and its modifier. To attain this goal, we concentrate on obtaining better dependency structure to predict better semantic relations, and propose a method to combine the results of three state-of-The-Art dependency parsers. Unfortunately, we made a mistake when we generate the final output that results in a lower score of 56.31%in term of lab.led Attachment Score (LAS), reported by organizers. After giving golden testing set, we fix the bug and rerun the evaluation script, this time we obtain the score of 62.8% which is consistentwith the results on developing set. We will report detailed experimental results with correct program as a comparison standard for further research. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In this paper, we present our system description for the CoNLL-2012 coreference resolution task on English, Chinese and Arabic. We investigate a projection-based model in which we first translate Chinese and Arabic into English, run a publicly availab.e coreference system, and then use a new projection algorithm to map the coreferring entities back from English into mention candidates detected in the Chinese and Arabic source. We compare to a baseline that just runs the English coreference system on the supplied parses for Chinese and Arabic. Because our method does not beat the baseline system on the development set, we submit outputs generated by the baseline system as our final submission. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In this paper, we present our system description in task of Cross-lingual Textual Entailment. The goal of this task is to detect entailment relations between two sentences written in different languages. To accomplish this goal, we first translate sentences written in foreign languages into English. Then, we use EDITS1, an open source package, to recognize entailment relations. Since EDITS only draws monodirectional relations while the task requires bidirectional prediction, thus we exchange the hypothesis and test to detect entailment in another direction. Experimental results show that our method achieves promising results but not perfect results compared to other participants. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Cache sharing among multiple computing units on chip is common in today's multi-core processors, and a lot of research has focused on the effective management of shared cache. A software management method called page coloring is commonly used to divide the cache among different applications competing for the same cache entries. Both static and dynamic cache partition mechanism have been implemented in operating system or user-space level. However, few efforts have been made under virtualization environments. Our previous work has provided a static cache partition method based on page coloring in Xen, following that, a dynamic cache partition mechanism called Colored Page Migration (CoPaM) is presented in this paper. © 2012 IEEE.

Convolution kernels support the modeling of complex syntactic information in machinelearning tasks. However, such models are highly sensitive to the type and size of syntactic structure used. It is therefore an important challenge to automatically identify high impact sub-structures relevant to a given task. In this paper we present a systematic study investigating (combinations of) sequence and convolution kernels using different types of substructures in document-level sentiment classification. We show that minimal sub-structures extracted from constituency and dependency trees guided by a polarity lexicon show 1.45 point absolute improvement in accuracy over a bag-of-words classifier on a widely used sentiment corpus. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Virtualisation is a prevalent technology in current computing. Among the many aspects of virtualisation, it can be employed to reduce hardware costs by server consolidation, implement "green computing" by reducing power consumption and as an underpinning process for cloud computing enabling the creation of a range of virtual networks and virtual supercomputers. This paper presents performance measurements for a cloning system known as iVIC that has been developed in Beihang University, China. In an extension to earlier work, it focuses on the factors the limit the number of clones that can be successfully started. IVIC creates clusters of virtual computers that can communicate with each other through virtual switch mechanisms. The virtual switches can also allow communication between the clone environment and the physical world. Testing has been undertaken to identify the limiting factors for creating and starting numbers of clone machines, measure the power consumption of the physical system and the computational performance capability of the clones. © 2012 IEEE.

It is an important task to tune performance for sparse matrix vector multiplication (SpMV), but it is also a difficult task because of its irregularity. In this paper, we propose a cache blocking method to improve the performance of SpMV on the emerging GPU architecture. The sparse matrix is partitioned into many sub-blocks, which are stored in CSR format. With the blocking method, the corresponding part of vector x can be reused in the GPU cache, so the time spent on accessing the global memory for vector x is reduced heavily. Experimental results on GeForce GTX 480 show that SpMV kernel with the cache blocking method is 5x faster than the unblocked CSR kernel in the best case. © 2012 IEEE.
