The Area Under the ROC Curve (AUC) is a well-known metric for evaluating instance-level long-tail learning problems. In the past two decades, many AUC optimization methods have been proposed to improve model performance under long-tail distributions. In this paper, we explore AUC optimization methods in the context of pixel-level long-tail semantic segmentation, a much more complicated scenario. This task introduces two major challenges for AUC optimization techniques. On one hand, AUC optimization in a pixel-level task involves complex coupling across loss terms, with structured inner-image and pairwise inter-image dependencies, complicating theoretical analysis. On the other hand, we find that mini-batch estimation of AUC loss in this case requires a larger batch size, resulting in an unaffordable space complexity. To address these issues, we develop a pixel-level AUC loss function and conduct a dependency-graph-based theoretical analysis of the algorithm’s generalization ability. Additionally, we design a Tail-Classes Memory Bank (T-Memory Bank) to manage the significant memory demand. Finally, comprehensive experiments across various benchmarks confirm the effectiveness of our proposed AUCSeg method. The code is availab.e at https://***/boyuh/AUCSeg. © 2024, CC BY.

As one of the prominent networking paradigms in the realm of the Internet of Things (IoT), the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) facilitates seamless information dissemination and task processing among vehicles equipped with onboard sensing, communication, computing, and storage capabilities. With the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, there is a vision to achieve pervasive intelligence within the IoV ecosystem. Various network entities, including connected vehicles, wireless base stations, edge/cloud servers, and aerial/space-assisted devices (such as drones and satellites), are expected to interact efficiently to perceive, reason, and make intelligent decisions based on contextual awareness. These advancements aim to enhance networking and computing effectiveness. The realization of an intelligent, safe, and ubiquitous IoV heavily relies on highly responsive task computing, adaptive networking, and efficient resource control to meet the increasingly diverse requirements of vehicular applications.

Stable Attribute Group Editing for Reliable Few-shot Image Generation

Few-shot image generation aims to generate data of an unseen category based on only a few samples. Apart from basic content generation, a bunch of downstream applications hopefully benefit from this task, such as low-data detection and few-shot classification. To achieve this goal, the generated images should guarantee category retention for classification beyond the visual quality and diversity. In our preliminary work, we present an "editing-based" framework Attribute Group Editing (AGE) for reliable few-shot image generation, which largely improves the performance compared with existing methods that require re-training a GAN with limited data. Nevertheless, AGE's performance on downstream classification is not as satisfactory as expected. This paper investigates the class inconsistency problem and proposes Stable Attribute Group Editing (SAGE) for more stable class-relevant image generation. Different from AGE which directly edits from a one-shot image, SAGE takes use of all given few-shot images and estimates a class center embedding based on the category-relevant attribute dictionary. Meanwhile, according to the projection weights on the category-relevant attribute dictionary, we can select category-irrelevant attributes from the similar seen categories. Consequently, SAGE injects the whole distribution of the novel class into StyleGAN's latent space, thus largely remains the category retention and stability of the generated images. Going one step further, we find that class inconsistency is a common problem in GAN-generated images for downstream classification. Even though the generated images look photo-realistic and requires no category-relevant editing, they are usually of limited help for downstream classification. We systematically discuss this issue from both the generative model and classification model perspectives, and propose to boost the downstream classification performance of SAGE by enhancing the pixel and frequency components. Energy trading in distributed microgrids represents an effective means of enhancing the utilization of renewable energy. However, the aggregation of large-scale consumption data may encounter business scalab.lity issues and potential privacy exposure concerns, necessitating the development of novel secure and scalab.e frameworks for integrating consumption demands between prosumer and microgrid entities. we research focuses on providing a user-friendly transaction model for consumers and microgrid operators. Firstly, a privacy aggregation scheme for user resource requests is designed to ensure the security and decentralization of user data. In addition, the model employs a bidirectional heterogeneous resource allocation mechanism to support the optimal allocation of multiple resources, such as renewable energy, power assets, energy storage devices, and carbon credits, among different microgrids. Finally, a microgrid transaction prototype has been constructed on the Truffle development framework. In this context, smart contracts has been designed to ensure that the transactions are carried out automatically. Experimental results indicate that the scheme provides enhanced security for multi-resource trading in a cluster context relative to existing methodologies. The number of transactions increases linearly with the resource overhead, resulting in more efficient utilization of energy trading. Furthermore, the framework's scalab.lity has been demonstrated through both temporal and spatial considerations. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) assisted wireless communication is essential for the next-generation mobile networks. In coping with the increased dynamics in UAV networks, the design of control information transmission is essential, requiring ultra reliability, low latency, and high security. In this paper, considering both the large-scale path loss and the Nakagami-m small-scale fading, we investigate the secrecy performance of UAV control information transmission in a NOMA ground-air network with an external flying eavesdropper. A spherical secrecy protection zone is set, and the closed-form expressions for average secure BLER and average achievable secrecy throughput are derived. After that, the asymptotic performance in the high SNR regime is analyzed to get more insights. Ultimately, simulation results verify the accuracy of analysis.

Collab.rative Metric Learning (CML) has recently emerged as a popular method in recommendation systems (RS), closing the gap between metric learning and Collab.rative Filtering. Following the convention of RS, existing methods exploit unique user representation in their model design. This paper focuses on a challenging scenario where a user has multiple categories of interests. Under this setting, we argue that the unique user representation might induce preference bias, especially when the item category distribution is imbalanced. To address this issue, we propose a novel method called Diversity-Promoting Collab.rative Metric Learning (DPCML), with the hope of considering the commonly ignored minority interest of the user. The key idea behind DPCML is to include a multiple set of representations for each user in the system. Based on this embedding paradigm, user preference toward an item is aggregated from different embeddings by taking the minimum item-user distance among the user embedding set. Furthermore, we observe that the diversity of the embeddings for the same user also plays an essential role in the model. To this end, we propose a Diversity Control Regularization Scheme (DCRS) to accommodate the multi-vector representation strategy better. Theoretically, we show that DPCML could generalize well to unseen test data by tackling the challenge of the annoying operation that comes from the minimum value. Experiments over a range of benchmark datasets speak to the efficacy of DPCML.

Recently, graph convolutional network (GCN) has progressed significantly and gained increasing attention in hyperspectral image (HSI) classification due to its impressive representation power. However, existing GCN-based methods do not give full consideration to the multiscale spatial information, since the convolution operations are governed by fixed neighborhood. As a result, their performances can be limited, particularly in the regions with diverse land cover appearances. In this article, we develop a new dual interactive GCN (DIGCN) which introduces the dual GCN branches to capture spatial information at different scales. More significantly, the dual interactive module is embedded across the GCN branches, so that the correlation of multiscale spatial information can be leveraged to refine the graph information. To be concrete, the edge information contained in one GCN branch can be refined by incorporating the feature representations from the other branch. Analogously, improved feature representations can be generated in one GCN branch by fusing the edge information from the other branch. As such, the refined graph information can help enhance the representation power of the model. Furthermore, to avoid the negative effects of the manually constructed graph, our proposed model adaptively learns a discriminative region-induced graph, which also accelerates the convolution operation. We comprehensively evaluate the proposed method on four commonly used HSI benchmark data sets, and the state-of-the-art results can be achieved when compared with several typical HSI classification methods. © 1980-2012 IEEE.

Not All Diffusion Model Activations Have Been Evaluated as Discriminative Features

Diffusion models are initially designed for image generation. Recent research shows that the internal signals within their backbones, named activations, can also serve as dense features for various discriminative tasks such as semantic segmentation. Given numerous activations, selecting a small yet effective subset poses a fundamental problem. To this end, the early study of this field performs a large-scale quantitative comparison of the discriminative ability of the activations. However, we find that many potential activations have not been evaluated, such as the queries and keys used to compute attention scores. Moreover, recent advancements in diffusion architectures bring many new activations, such as those within embedded ViT modules. Both combined, activation selection remains unresolved but overlooked. To tackle this issue, this paper takes a further step with a much broader range of activations evaluated. Considering the significant increase in activations, a full-scale quantitative comparison is no longer operational. Instead, we seek to understand the properties of these activations, such that the activations that are clearly inferior can be filtered out in advance via simple qualitative evaluation. After careful analysis, we discover three properties universal among diffusion models, enabling this study to go beyond specific models. On top of this, we present effective feature selection solutions for several popular diffusion models. Finally, the experiments across multiple discriminative tasks validate the superiority of our method over the SOTA competitors. Our code is availab.e at this url. © 2024, CC BY.

Suppress Content Shift: Better Diffusion Features via Off-the-Shelf Generation Techniques

Diffusion models are powerful generative models, and this capability can also be applied to discrimination. The inner activations of a pre-trained diffusion model can serve as features for discriminative tasks, namely, diffusion feature. We discover that diffusion feature has been hindered by a hidden yet universal phenomenon that we call content shift. To be specific, there are content differences between features and the input image, such as the exact shape of a certain object. We locate the cause of content shift as one inherent characteristic of diffusion models, which suggests the broad existence of this phenomenon in diffusion feature. Further empirical study also indicates that its negative impact is not negligible even when content shift is not visually perceivable. Hence, we propose to suppress content shift to enhance the overall quality of diffusion features. Specifically, content shift is related to the information drift during the process of recovering an image from the noisy input, pointing out the possibility of turning off-the-shelf generation techniques into tools for content shift suppression. We further propose a practical guideline named GATE to efficiently evaluate the potential benefit of a technique and provide an implementation of our methodology. Despite the simplicity, the proposed approach has achieved superior results on various tasks and datasets, validating its potential as a generic booster for diffusion features.
