Not only in real societies, but also in virtual worlds, the spatial pattern of transport networks imposes important influences on the travel, work and living style of people or agents. To gain a deep understanding of such influences, this study simulates the developmental process of a transport network by deploying an algorithm of neighborhood-diffusion on an artificial society platform with characteristics of geographic systems. The finally developed spatial pattern of transport network differs significantly from that yielded previously from using a DLA algorithm. Importantly, it is demonstrated that the transportation network produced with the neighborhood-diffusion algorithm displays a spatial pattern very similar to the idealized agricultural land use style described by von Thiinen rings. Hence, the neighborhood-diffusion algorithm is more suitable for understanding the formative process of rural land use change, in contrast to the suitability of the DLA algorithm for explaining urban developmental process. © 2010 IEEE.

Global motion estimation for moving object extraction in MPEG video streams

In this paper, a novel moving object extraction scheme for MPEG video stream is proposed. Firstly, the DC and AC [1], AC [8] coefficients are extracted directly from MPEG video stream to re-construct the DC + 2AC image, which is used to obtain the contour feature of I frame. Secondly, the sparse motion vector field of P frame is interpolated to make it dense and then projected to I frame iteratively. Moving object is extracted by the fusion of spatio-temporal segmentation. The innovation lies in the global motion estimation (GME) algorithm in compressed domain to compensate the global motion caused by camera. Thus, the proposed approach is feasible for almost any sequence including the static scene and the dynamic scene. Since only the background blocks are used to estimate the motion parameters, the computational complexity is greatly reduced. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can obtain satisfactory segmentation results and can be used in real-time system because it is mainly implemented in the compressed domain. © 2009 Binary Information Press.

Identifying the spatial structure generated by urban movements contributes to a better understanding of urban dynamics and is crucial to urban planning applications. Despite a number of studies concerning functional urban space, related research is still in a development phase, especially using emerging urban movement data. This study proposes a centrality index and attractiveness indices for detecting the urban spatial structure of functional centers and their spatial impacts using transportation data. The basic idea of these indices is to build a relationship between the activity patterns (distribution, density, and diversity) and urban form. Accordingly, measurements, spatial analysis, and clustering methods are presented. Taking Singapore as a case study area, we applied the proposed indices and measurements to travel survey data of different years, through which centers of urban activities as well as the changing urban form are detected and compared quantitatively. Our approach yields important insights into urban phenomena generated by human movements. It represents a novel way of quantitative urban analysis and explicit urban change identification. Web service schema matching is the preliminary treatment phase of service composition and service mashup. With the entry and exit of large numbers of services on the Internet, it will be difficult to find and suggest the most relevant service candidates for new composition and mashup. In this work, we present an approach for web service schema matching based on characteristic vector consisted of multi-type service parameter information element. This schema matching approach is different form the main syntactical-based and semantic-based matching approaches, and will predict schema relationship more effectively and adaptable for web service. An experiment on real data shows the effectiveness of this approach. © 2011 IEEE.

The series of Where-What Networks (WWNs) is a brain-inspired developmental model that simulates the dorsal (where) stream and the ventral (what) stream that converge to the motor area in the frontal cortex. Since developmental learning is always incremental, the order of different stimuli should affect the outcome of learning. In contrast to the uniform distribution of stimuli across image frames used in prior WWN experiments, this work studies non-uniform distribution in the sense that during training one object is presented at all the image locations before another object is presented. A new mechanism called cell regenesis is introduced to enable a less-often used cell to recommit its neuronal resource to new stimuli. The experimental results shown in this paper indicate that WWN-6 can deal with object-wise incremental learning. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Generic object recognition is one of the most important fields in the artificial intelligence. Some cortex-like networks for generic object recognition are proposed these years. But most of them concentrated on the discussion about the recognition performance (such as recognition rate, number of objects to be recognized), not the practicability, i.e., implementation with ubiquitous devices and application in real time. This paper reports a try on implementation of a biologically-inspired where-what network (WWN), which integrates object recognition and attention in a single network, via parallelizing the various stages of the network training with CUDA on GPU to shorten the training time. The experiment on HAIBAO Robot exhibited in 2010 Shanghai Expo shows that this optimization can achieve a speedup of almost 16 times compared to the C-based program on an Intel Core 2 DUO 3.00 GHZ CPU in real environments. © 2012 Springer-Verlag GmbH.

Vision-based motion estimation is a key technique in autonomously mobile robot. This paper presents an integrated method for motion estimation of the mobile robot based on floor plane extraction. The whole processes include floor plane extraction, pose estimation of the onboard stereo vision system and motion estimation of the mobile robot. First, based on disparity map obtained from the onboard real-time stereo vision system, a two-stage method is used for fast floor plane extraction. Then all the points belong to the floor plane are transformed from disparity space to Euclidean space, and a simple least squares method is employed to fit the floor plane. The fitting parameters of the floor plane are used for the pose estimation of the onboard stereo vision system. Finally, the motion of the mobile robot is estimated with the tracking results of the points on floor plane. The proposed motion estimation method is intended to be used in the motion control of a wheeled mobile robot. Experimental results in real environments are presented. ©2009 IEEE.

Software architecture design is an important stage in the whole software development lifecycle. There are so many various concerns at architecture level which relate to all kinds of stakeholders and describe the all facets of problem domain. Unfortunately, they often tangle and scatter in the components and connectors, result in the final architecture solutions uneasy to evolve and reuse. So in this paper, we propose a generic model named "1+X" which can separate the concern at architecture level along multiple dimensions. Also, we provide specification for each dimension and concerns in a dimension. This makes it possible to effectively cope with the crosscutting concerns at architecture level, encapsulate those using aspects or design decisions in the later architecture design activities. © 2008 IEEE.

Currently, a majority of existing algorithms for sparse optimization problems are based on regularization framework. The main goal of these algorithms is to recover a sparse solution with k non-zero components(called k-sparse). In fact, the sparse optimization problem can also be regarded as a multi-objective optimization problem, which considers the minimization of two objectives (i.e., loss term and penalty term). In this paper, we proposed a revised version of MOEA/D based on iterative thresholding algorithm for sparse optimization. It only aims at finding a local part of trade-off solutions, which should include the k-sparse solution. Some experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness of MOEA/D for sparse signal recovery in compressive sensing. Our experimental results showed that MOEA/D is capable of identifying the sparsity degree without prior sparsity information. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Reducing the energy consumption of cellular wireless access networks is not only beneficial for the global environment but also makes commercial sense for telecommunication operators, our research focus on how to put forward a constructive energy saving method in the precondition of guaranteed service quality for customer. In this paper, we based on the signaling data and location data coming from one of Chinese main operator's customers, trying to analysis the law that with the increase of users in a district, how their demand for energy change. Through the use of the law, operators can make a basis when conducting the construction of the base station at the time of city expansion and the redundancy phenomenon of construction of base station can be effectively reduced and then make contributions to energy saving, the law can also be used to provide a reference for city Planning Bureau when they conducting the urban planning and the construction of Green city and then get the purpose of optimal allocation of resources. In our study, we carry out the statistics of 1558053 users from Chongqing city, finally we found that with the increase of customer' number of each special district, the number of total traffic in the city present a change of power function.
