Existing state-of-the-art approaches in video action recognition mostly adopt RGB images and optical flows as input and neglect the abundant information provided by human poses. In this paper, we present a novel method that highlights the essential area of human body and takes it as complementary input for existing action recognition pipelines. The method, called Pose Mask Network (PMN), leverages a 2D pose estimator to extract heatmaps from frames and utilizes them as Pose Masks on the original images. The Pose Masks are robust to the variance of background and focus on key information of human body. Experiments show that our Pose Mask yields a result far exceeding that of using simple pose representations. More importantly, PMN acts as a supplement to other RGB-based approaches. Combining our PMN with Temporal Segment Network, we obtain state-of-the-art performance on the HMDB51 and JHMDB datasets. © 2019 IEEE.

To reveal the change law of the simulation error of grey model GM(1,1) with translation transformation applying on the original sequence, in this paper, the experiments based on 55 real world data sequences have been conducted to study how the translation transformation influences the grey models' error characteristics. The results show that a larger translation transformation can make the total error between the model sequence and the original sequence toward zero, and the model precision remains independent. The conclusion implies that we can use translation transformation to change the original sequence data level to simplify the model building without changing the model precision. © 2013 IEEE.

Hot spot prediction in protein interfaces is very important for understanding the essence of protein interactions and may provide promising prospect for drug design. Since experimental approaches such as alanine scanning mutagenesis are cost-expensive and time-consuming, reliable computational methods are needed. In this paper, a systematic method based on least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) within the Bayesian evidence framework is proposed, where three levels Bayesian inferences are used to determine the model parameters and regularization hyper-parameters. Then a higher precision model for hot spots is constructed by optimizing these parameters. Compared with the previous methods, our model appears to be better performance. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Apart from servers, the energy consumed by enormous amount of network devices in data centers also emerges as a big problem. Existing work on energy- efficient data center networking primarily focuses on traffic engineering to consolidate flows and shut down unused devices, not considering another important factor, virtual machine assignment, which has been shown to have a big influence on traffic engineering. Moreover, the lack of information about upper layer applications leads to misunderstand the traffic patterns of the network. This may result in poor effectiveness in the traffic-based optimization in practice. In this paper, we aim to achieve better network energy efficiency in MapReduce systems by combining virtual machine assignment and traffic engineering. By exploiting the characteristics of MapReduce applications, we provide a unified model to describe this problem. Due to its NP-hardness, a general framework is proposed to solve it, where virtual machines are first clustered and then different virtual machine assignments are generated greedily and a local search procedure is used to improve them. The local search procedure depends on the results of an energy-efficient routing provided by GEERA. GEERA is an approximate algorithm designed to select routing paths for flows. Experimental results confirm the efficiency of GEERA, as well as the overall framework. By using this framework, up to 20% more energy savings can be achieved compared with sole traffic engineering solutions. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, we investigate the problem of controlling node sleep intervals so as to achieve the min-max energy fairness in asynchronous duty-cycling sensor networks. We propose a mathematical model to describe the energy efficiency of such networks and observe that traditional sleep interval setting strategy, i.e., operating sensor nodes with identical sleep intervals, or intuitive control heuristics, i.e., greedily increasing sleep intervals of sensor nodes with high energy consumption rates, hardly perform well in practice. There is an urgent need to develop an efficient sleep interval control strategy for achieving fair and high energy efficiency. To this end, we theoretically formulate the Sleep Interval Control (SIC) problem and find it a convex optimization problem. By utilizing the convex property, we decompose the original problem and propose a distributed algorithm, called GDSIC. In GDSIC, sensor nodes can tune sleep intervals through a local information exchange such that the maximum energy consumption rate in the network approaches to be minimized. The algorithm is self-adjustable to the traffic load variance and is able to serve as a unified framework for a variety of asynchronous duty-cycling MAC protocols. We implement our approach in a prototype system and test its feasibility and applicability on a 50-node testbed. We further conduct extensive trace-driven simulations to examine the efficiency and scalab.lity of our algorithm with various settings. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a distributed resource allocation framework for cognitive radio networks by using the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) modulation. We jointly consider the constraints of quality of service (QoS), maximum power, and minimum rates in the network to obtain optimal availab.e subcarrier sets and transmission power. The fairness of resource allocation is guaranteed by incorporating the probability that a subcarrier is occupied into the link capacity expression. We present a distributed subcarrier selection and power allocation algorithm and evaluate the algorithm through simulations. Our results confirm that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of throughput, the number of secondary links admitted, and the fairness of resource allocation. © 2011 IEEE.

In response to the high demand of big data analytics, several programming models on large and distributed cluster systems have been proposed and implemented, such as MapRe-duce, Dryad and Pregel. However, compared with high performance computing areas, the basis and principles of computation and communication behavior of big data analytics is not well studied. In this paper, we review the current big data computational model DOT and DOTA, and propose a more general and practical model p-DOT (p-phases DOT). p-DOT is not a simple extension, but with profound significance: for general aspects, any big data analytics job execution expressed in DOT model or BSP model can be represented by it; for practical aspects, it considers I/O behavior to evaluate performance overhead. Moreover, we provide a cost function implying that the optimal number of machines is near-linear to the square root of input size for a fixed algorithm and workload, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the function through several experiments.

In order to support mobile service of long-distance monitoring and controlling UPS based on Web, a kind of design and implementation solution of embedded UPS (EUPS) system is brought forward in this paper. The design and implementation of system is based on ATmega161 and RTL8019AS with TCP/IP protocol suite for communication. In the EUPS system, an embedded file system is designed and implemented which can store the data and index information on a serial EEPROM chip in structured way and communicate with MCU through I2C bus. By embedding the file system into UPS system or other information appliances, users can browse and manipulate local data on the web client side. Based on our experimental tests, the performance of EUPS can meet the requirements of Web-based mobile services. © 2010 Binary Information Press.

This paper presents our experience in developing an embedded processor core model for an SOC design. We developed an ARM1136 processor simulation environment based on the ARM's MaxCore tool and the SimpleScaclar simulator. A MaxCore ARM1136 instruction accurate (IA) model is developed to support application programmers for the writing application programs from the early design stage. The MaxCore ARM1136 processor model supports all ARMv4, ARMv5TE and ARM v6 instruction sets with 418 LISA instructions. This MaxCore IA Model can be integrated with the ARM's MaxSim system level design environment to develop application softwares and perform architecture explorations. A SimpleScalar ARM1136 cycle accurate (CA) model is also developed by enhancing the existing SimpleScalar-ARM version in the SimpleScalar 3.0. Most important micro-architectural features of ARM1136 processor are implemented in the enhanced SimpleScalar simulator. The accuracy of the developed SimpleScalar-ARM 1136 simulator is about 97% compared to ARM 1136 RTL simulation with the Dhrystone benchmark (100 iterations). © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.
