Chitosan(CS) and anion polyacrylamide(APAM) have been used to build up polyelectrolyte multilayers on recycled fibers based on the technology of layer-by-layer self-assembly. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) was introduced to observe the morphology of the CS/APAM multilayers, zeta potential analyzer was adopted to monitor the dynamic features of pulp slurry during the polyelectrolyte multilayers build up, and FT-IR technique was used to investigate the formation mechanism. It was shown that chitosan (CS) and anion polyacrylamide(APAM) were alternately absorbed on negative fiber surface driven by electrostatic attraction. The fiber surface charge reversed due to the absorption of chitosan (CS) and anion polyacrylamide(APAM). The change of zeta potential of recycled fiber slurry can be believed as the indication of the process of layer-by-layer self-assembly. Strength measurements of the sheets including burst index and folding strength showed significant improvements ranging from 55 to 400%, which depend on the type of polyelectrolyte in the outer layer.

Similarity calculation has many applications, such as information retrieval, and collab.rative filtering, among many others. It has been shown that link-based similarity measure, such as SimRank, is very effective in characterizing the object similarities in networks, such as the Web, by exploiting the object-to-object relationship. Unfortunately, it is prohibitively expensive to compute the link-based similarity in a relatively large graph. In this paper, based on the observation that link-based similarity scores of real world graphs follow the power-law distribution, we propose a new approximate algorithm, namely Power-SimRank, with guaranteed error bound to efficiently compute link-based similarity measure. We also prove the convergence of the proposed algorithm. Extensive experiments conducted on real world datasets and synthetic datasets show that the proposed algorithm outperforms SimRank by four-five times in terms of efficiency while the error generated by the approximation is small.

This paper demonstrates an atmospheric correction method to process MODIS/Aqua (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) ocean color imagery over turbid coastal waters with the aid of concurrent CALIOP (Cloud-Aerosol LIdar with Orthogonal Polarization) aerosol data, assuming that there exists "nonturbid" water in the study area where MODIS aerosol optical properties can be retrieved accurately. Aerosol properties from CALIOP measurements were obtained and related to those from MODIS. This relationship, combined with CALIOP aerosol data, was extended to turbid water to derive MODIS aerosol properties, where atmospheric correction using MODIS data alone often fails. By combining MODIS and CALIOP data, aerosol signals were separated from the total signals at the satellite level, and water-leaving radiances in turbid waters were subsequently derived. This method was tested on several MODIS/Aqua ocean color images over South China turbid waters. Comparison with field data shows that this method was effective in reducing the errors in the retrieved water-leaving radiance values to some extent. In the Zhujiang (Pearl) River Estuary, this method did not overestimate the aerosol effects as severely, and provided far fewer negative water-leaving radiance values than the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) default methods that used MODIS data alone.

In light of the growing trend of various types of planned special events, it is necessary to study the traffic management during such events. By analyzing the characteristics of travel demand in these events, this paper divides traffic management procedures into three phases, namely the traffic management planning phase, the day-of-event management phase, and the post-event evaluation phase. In particular, based on the experiences of traffic management in Beijing Olympic Games, we present the main tasks in the traffic management planning phase and then discuss the detailed strategies of the day-of-event traffic management phase. The research results have meaningful implications for traffic control and management during similar planned special events in China. Copyright ASCE 2009.
