Analysis on the shear modulus of MR elastomer based on chain-like model

Magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) is a new kind of Magnetorheological material, which are mainly composed of polymer rubber and micron-sized magnetizable iron particles. Based on the magnetomechanics, the microstructure of chains consisting of polarized particles, and the interaction between particles, the shear stress distribution contributed by a single chain of polarized particles is formulated, and then the yield stress of magnetorheological elastomer is obtained under the assumption that the distribution of chains tends normally. The effects of the applied magnetic field intensity, the size of the particles, and the volume fraction of the particles on the macroscopic yield stress are analyzed. The proposed model is capable of analyzing the effects of other influencing factors on the yield criterion of MRE, which may assist the design and development of high-performance MRE.

In this correspondence, we study the application of network coding to opportunistic scheduling for wireless uplink channels. An important observation is that existing scheduling protocols occasionally have to allow the users which do not have the largest channel gain to be scheduled, which can maintain the fairness but reduce the throughput. The key idea proposed in this paper is to always schedule the user with best channel gain for transmission, and meantime the use of network coding encourages the scheduled users to help the ones which have not been served previously. Analytical and numerical results have been developed to show that the proposed network coding schedulers can achieve better tradeoff of fairness and system throughput than comparable schemes.

McPherson Suspension is researched with multi-body dynamics and Suspension Kinematics theory. When the front rubber bushing stiffness of lower control arm is changed, the suspension performance is analyzed and discussed in the vertical bounce, roll bounce, brake force and drive force. The conclusion is drawn that stiffness of front rubber bushing in all directions has no effect on the suspension performance in the vertical bounce and roll bounce. In the brake force and drive force radical stiffness of rubber bushing has heavy effect on the suspension performance and axial and torsion stiffness of rubber bushing has a little effect on the suspension performance. ©2009 IEEE.

What-if analysis can provide more meaningful information than classical OLAP. Multi-scenario hypothesis based on historical data needs efficient what-if data view support. In general, delta table for what-if analysis is more general than other solutions such as query re-writing prototype of Sesame. Delta table is independent of base table and is more suitable to represent complex hypothetical updates and multi-version hypothetical updates. Due to low efficiency of traditional delta table merging algorithm which is based on set operation, there are few researches focus on delta table merging algorithm but on query re-writing algorithm. By analyzing the difference between what-if query and what-if analysis and improving the delta table merging algorithm, we propose novel algorithms without set operation of difference. Considering the feature of aggregate operations in OLAP analysis, pre-merge algorithm is presented without the generation of what if data view before group-bys in the scenario of SUM, AVERAGE and COUNT function OLAP queries. In our experiments, the pre-merge algorithm greatly improved the efficiency of delta table merging procedure which is close to base group-by statement and superior to the re-writing algorithm. A complete comparison between all candidate delta table merging algorithms and re-writing algorithm with different what-if update conditions of update, deletion, insertion and mixed what-if updates is exhibited in our experiments, the policy of what-if analysis among different types is also discussed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

The decolorization of Reactive Red K-2BP wastewater with sponge iron was investigated through batch experiments. The decolorization process appeared to a pseudo-first order reaction. The observed first-order rate constants (k obs) varied from 0.087 to 0.033 /min with the dye concentration from 50 to 300 mg/l at 50 g/l sponge iron loading , and half-lives (t1/2) varied from 7.97 to 21 min. The decolorization efficiency increased with increments of sponge iron dosage, and decreased with the increments of particle size of the sponge iron and initial pH of dye concentration. Under optimal conditions, over 90% of decolorization efficiency could be obtained. Comparison of UV-vis spectra of Reactive Red K-2BP before and after reaction showed disappearance of the absorbance peaks in the visible region after reaction and appearance of a new absorbance peak at 202nm, indicating destruction of the azo bond and generation of many degradation intermediates. X-ray diffraction (XRD) of sponge iron showed magnetite (Fe+2Fe2+3O4) and lepidocrocite (Fe+3O(OH)) on the surface of sponge iron after the reaction. ©2009 IEEE.

The aim of the study was to determine the changes in the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) content during the forced-aeration composting of anaerobic digested sludge and sawdust. The content of 16 PAHs and some physical-chemical properties in composting products were monitored. Composting showed an efficient decrease of the content and the bioavailab.lity of individual PAH. The total PAH content (ΣPAHs) ranged from 7.846 to 1.790 mg/ (kg·dry sample) for 31 days of composting, and Four- and three-ring compounds were predominant during the composting. Biodegradation and sorption are suggested as the mainly degradation for PAHs with a low number of aromatic rings and PAHs with a large number of aromatic rings, respectively. Concentration, distribution pattern and degradation rate of PAHs in compost product were closely relative with PAHs features in the raw sludge. ©2009 IEEE.

This paper presented the effects of finite dimensions of the sample and non-zero heat capacity of the strip on thermal conductivity determination with the transient hot-strip (THS) method. Through numerical analysis of temperature field within the system composed of the samples and the strip, the temperature transients at the strip surface were obtained to calculate the thermal conductivities of materials, which were compared to the exact values. The effect of heat losses out of the external surfaces of the sample and the heat capacity of the strip on thermal conductivity determination were then analyzed comprehensively. It is shown that the sample finite dimensions have great effect on thermal conductivity determination, especially on the materials with relatively higher thermal diffusivities, and the measured thermal conductivity always lower than the exact value due to the lower convective heat transfer coefficient out of the external surfaces of the sample. The measurement error is estimated less than 2.2 percent for the material with thermal diffusivity less than 4.0 × 10-6 m2/s with the sample dimensions of 120 mm x 60 mm (width x thickness) and the fitting time interval of 20 - 450s. The non-zero heat capacity of the strip has great effect on thermal conductivity determinations of the materials with relatively lower thermal diffusivities. The measurement error is estimated less than 5 percent for the material with thermal diffusivity larger than 0.8 × 10-7 m2/s with Cr20Ni80 alloy as the strip. Copyright © 2009 by ASME.

According to the experimental results of side polished fiber (SPF), a three dimensional optical waveguide model with longitudinal side polished transition zones is built. Based on the model, characteristics of optical transmission are calculated and analyzed by three dimensional finite differential beam propagation method. The model describes the optical transmission characteristics because the calculation based on the model is fitted well with the experiments. The calculation shows that the length of side polished area affects the optical attenuation of optical fiber, but the attenuation does not increased monotonically with the length when the length is less than certain value. The relationship between optical attenuation of SPF and the thickness of residual side polished cladding is not a monotonie one as well. The refractive index of overly on the side polished area has much more effect on the optical attenuation. Both width and thickness of overlay on the side polished area cause the oscillated change of optical power attenuation in the fiber core. © 2009 SPIE.

At present, bidirectional transmission over a signal fiber is applied in many fields, such as WDM. Bidirectional transmission over a signal fiber can reduce the required number of fibers and uses one optical source, so it is lower cost than unidirectional transmission counterparts. In this paper, the phase-noise counteracting characteristic in the bidirectional transmission over a polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) due to different polarization rotating angle of counter-propagation light is analyzed. The analyzing results indicate that the bidirectional system with a special polarization rotating angle of counter- propagation light has a good property that can counteract phase noises coming from external factors such as temperature etc. reciprocal factors. Thus, phases' fluctuation can be reduced and it has the advantages of measuring phase change and achieving phase calibration. Based on the result, using Jones matrix, the established system is discussed and the phase difference owing to nonreciprocal parameters such as Faraday electromagnetic induction is obtained. So the calibration of phase is achieved according to the measured results. © 2009 SPIE.

Similarity calculation has many applications, such as information retrieval, and collab.rative filtering, among many others. It has been shown that link-based similarity measure, such as SimRank, is very effective in characterizing the object similarities in networks, such as the Web, by exploiting the object-to-object relationship. Unfortunately, it is prohibitively expensive to compute the link-based similarity in a relatively large graph. In this paper, based on the observation that link-based similarity scores of real world graphs follow the power-law distribution, we propose a new approximate algorithm, namely Power-SimRank, with guaranteed error bound to efficiently compute link-based similarity measure. We also prove the convergence of the proposed algorithm. Extensive experiments conducted on real world datasets and synthetic datasets show that the proposed algorithm outperforms SimRank by four-five times in terms of efficiency while the error generated by the approximation is small.
