Efficient image storage and transmission is in great demand for medical community. Compression techniques that achieve high quality for the regions important to medical diagnosis, and high overall compression ratio, may have the potential for widespread medical acceptance. JPEG 2000 provides two ROI encoding schemes: the maxshift and the implicit ROI encoding. In this paper, we present a new ROI coding scheme that not only retains advantages, but also alleviates the drawbacks of both ROI coding methods. We evaluate our method on the CT, MR, and ultrasound images, and demonstrate its coding efficiency and advantages.

This paper proposes a closed-loop approach for the solutions of the electrocardiographic inverse problem. An optimization algorithm is designed to recursively refine the inverse solutions. This method allows us to obtain detailed information on the cardiac electric events under a realistic and inhomogeneous heart-torso model. Simulation results show that it is feasible to identify and localize electric events for patients suffered from the old anteriorseptal and the old inferior myocardial infarction.

This paper presents a new method for region of interest (ROI) coding based on the embedded block coding with optimized truncation (EBCOT) paradigm. The proposed method reduces the priority of the less important region or background of an image, allowing the user to quickly view the ROI with higher quality without receiving the entire image. Thus, it substantially saves the transmission time, storage space, and computational cost of image compression. The unique characteristics of the new method lie in the combination of good ROI compression performance and low algorithm complexity. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method significantly outperforms the previous ROI coding schemes in overall ROI coding performance.

Nonlinear analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals provides a possible means for studying the dynamical changes in cortical networks related to mental activity. In this study, the correlation dimension (D2) was employed to investigate the quantitative complexity of EEG signals. In addition, fast GP algorithms for the computation of correlation dimension are described. EEGs were recorded in 20 normal subjects under four conditions: (1) passive eyes closed, (2) mental arithmetic with eyes closed, (3) passive eyes open, and (4) mental reasoning with eyes open. Results show that D2 increases during mental arithmetic with eyes closed and is significantly larger in the left brain than the right one during the mental reasoning with eyes open.

Heart rate variability (HRV) has become a useful tool for analyzing cardiovascular autonomic control from the electrocardiogram (ECG). Detection and analysis of HRV allows a quantitative and noninvasive method to obtain reliable and reproducible information on autonomie modulation of heart rate. Nonlinear methods (e.g., correlation dimension) are promising tools for HRV assessment. This paper presents a reliable estimation of correlation dimension (D2) for nonlinear HRV analysis. A modified GP correlation algorithm and the selection of parameters are presented. This nonlinear dynamical index is then employed for HRV characterization of the healthy subjects and hypertension patients. Results show that D2 in daytime of a healthy person is generally smaller than that at night, whereas the hypertension patients exhibit no specific trend between the D2 in daytime and that at night.

After analyzing integration. of SCADA with AM/FM/GIS in distribution management system (DMS), we point out that integrated on-line SCADA/AM/FM/GIS just monitors macroscopic run specificity of the electric power system, but does not take into account insulation run state and fault diagnosis situation of electrical equipment, so it has certain limitations. Meanwhile, the classification and function of an on-line monitoring system for electrical equipment are discussed in this paper, and a thought is proposed that integrates AM/FM/GIS with on-line monitoring system of electrical equipment. The new integrated system not only comprehensively reflects the run state of electric power system and equipment but also can monitor on-line insulation state of electrical equipment, so it has quite good economic and practical value. A few of methods to integrate AM/FM/GIS with equipment insulation on-line monitor system are proposed by studying the direction of modern software exploitation technique and practical application. The practical application instance shows that it has excellent effectiveness.

In this paper, magnetic solid acid catalyst of SO2-4/Co0.5Fe2.5O 4-ZrO2 with different molar ratios has been synthesized, and the influence of magnetic substrates Co0.5Fe2.5O4 on particle size, crystallizing temperature, and crystal structure of ZrO2 was investigated. The catalytic activity of the magnetic solid acid was studied for esterification reaction, and life, recovery and variation of magnetic property of the catalyst were tested. The results show that the addition of the magnetic substrate not only magnetizes but also delay the conversion from ZrO2(t) to ZrO2(m) during the formation of solid superacid, which makes acid sites on the surface of sample more stable and promotes its superacidity and catalytic activity. The conversion of esterification catalyzed by SO2-4/Co0.5Fe2.5O 4-ZrO2 can reach 97. 31% and 74. 69% conversion can be obtained after it was used for 6 times in the reaction and after it was regenerated, the conversion reaches 96. 25%, meaning that the catalytic activity of this catalyst may be recovered.
