Seismic Optimization for Hysteretic Damping-Tuned Mass Damper (HD-TMD) Subjected to White-Noise Excitation

The hysteretic damping tuned mass damper (HD-TMD) is composed of a spring element, a hysteretic damping (HD) element, and a mass. The HD force is proportional to the displacement of the tuned mass damper (TMD). Recently, the application of HD-TMD has emerged, but its optimal design is still lacking. To fill this academic gap, numerical solutions for optimal parameters of HD-TMD subjected to white-noise excitation were obtained based on the H2 optimization criterion. Performance balance optimization with a weighting factor was carried out to improve the response of a structure with the HD-TMD system. A set of earthquake records and harmonic excitations were conducted to prove the effectiveness of the optimal numerical solutions and the performance balance design. It was found that the performance of the HD-TMD is slightly better than that of the traditional optimized TMD. As a real TMD application of HD-TMD, the variable friction pendulum TMD (VFP-TMD) was selected to experience earthquakes with the proposed optimal methods. Results showed that the optimal solutions provided the best performance but raised the problem of difficulty in maintaining linearity with a large displacement. Nevertheless, the performance balance design helped reduce this defect and provided impressive seismic mitigation capacity. Compared with the optimal numerical solution results, the performance balance design demonstrated 2.847% of loss in the maximum structural displacement reduction rate and 3.709% of loss in the root mean square reduction rate during the earthquake-excited period, respectively. © 2023 Yue Xiang et al.

Adaptive Loose Optimization for Robust Question Answering

Question answering methods are well-known for leveraging data bias, such as the language prior in visual question answering and the position bias in machine reading comprehension (extractive question answering). Current debiasing methods often come at the cost of significant in-distribution performance to achieve favorable out-of-distribution generalization ability, while non-debiasing methods sacrifice a considerable amount of out-of-distribution performance in order to obtain high in-distribution performance. Therefore, it is challenging for them to deal with the complicated changing real-world situations. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective novel loss function with adaptive loose optimization, which seeks to make the best of both worlds for question answering. Our main technical contribution is to reduce the loss adaptively according to the ratio between the previous and the current optimization state on mini-batch training data. This loose optimization can be used to prevent non-debiasing methods from overlearning data bias while enabling debiasing methods to maintain slight bias learning. Experiments on the visual question answering datasets, including VQA v2, VQA-CP v1, VQA-CP v2, GQA-OOD, and the extractive question answering dataset SQuAD demonstrate that our approach enables QA methods to obtain state-of-the-art in- and out-of-distribution performance in most cases. The fifth generation (5G) mobile network is a new generation of broadband mobile communication technology with the potential to address the increasing demands of new user services and applications that have stringent low latency and high bandwidth requirements. Besides the enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) which is an evolution of broadband services from previous generations, the ultra reliable low latency communication (URLLC) service comes with stringent delay requirements that are needed to support new applications like autonomous vehicles, augmented/virtual reality, etc. Mobile or multiple access edge computing (MEC) emerged to provide services and computing resources for users at the network edge to provide faster access speeds and lower end-to-end delays. To better meet user needs and maximize resource utilization, network resources need to be allocated and managed efficiently. Admission control for user requests is one of the methods used that can effectively prevent network congestion, thereby improving the overall performance of the system. In this paper, we propose a RED-based Admission Control with Latency Considerations (REDAL) algorithm for user admission control that aims to increase throughput, meet users’ delay requirements and reduce packet discard rate. By explicitly accounting for user traffic delay constraints and bandwidth requirements, we are able to meet the strict delay constraints of URLLC traffic while meeting the bandwidth requirements of eMBB traffic. We validate our approach in an MEC scenario to demonstrate high resource utilization and also keeping the request discard rate below 20%.

Learning from Multi-Positive and Unlab.led (MPU) data has gradually attracted significant attention from practical applications. Unfortunately, the risk of MPU also suffer from the shift of minimum risk, particularly when the models are very flexible as shown in Fig.1. In this paper, to alleviate the shifting of minimum risk problem, we propose an Example Sieve Approach (ESA) to select examples for training a multi-class classifier. Specifically, we sieve out some examples by utilizing the Certain Loss (CL) value of each example in the training stage and analyze the consistency of the proposed risk estimator. Besides, we show that the estimation error of proposed ESA obtains the optimal parametric convergence rate. Multi-lab.l Pedestrian Attribute Recognition (PAR) involves identifying a series of semantic attributes in person images. Existing PAR solutions typically rely on CNN as the backbone network to extract pedestrian features. Unfortunately, CNNs process only one adjacent region at a time, resulting in the disappearance of long-range relations between different attribute-specific regions. To address this limitation, we adopt the Vision Transformer (ViT) instead of CNN as the backbone for PAR, aiming to build long-range relations and extract more robust features. However, PAR suffers from an inherent attribute imbalance issue, causing ViT to naturally focus more on attributes that appear frequently in the training set and ignore some pedestrian attributes that appear less. The native features extracted by ViT are not able to tolerate the imbalance attribute distribution issue. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel component and a dual-level loss: the Selective Feature Activation Method (SFAM), the Orthogonal Feature Activation Loss (OFALoss), and Orthogonal Weight Regularization Loss (OWRLoss). SFAM smartly suppresses the more informative attribute-specific features, thus compelling the PAR model to pay greater attention to attribute-specific regions that are often overlooked. The proposed OFALoss enforces an orthogonal constraint on the original feature extracted by ViT and the suppressed features from SFAM, promoting the comprehensiveness of feature representation in each attribute-specific region. Furthermore, OWRLoss is employed for decreasing correlations among entries of the last shared classification layer, which can alleviate the highly correlated of weight vectors caused by non-uniform distribution. This can prevent excessive mutual interference among different attributes during attribute recognition. Semi-autoregressive transformer for image captioning

Current state-of-the-art image captioning models adopt autoregressive decoders, i.e. they generate each word by conditioning on previously generated words, which leads to heavy latency during inference. To tackle this issue, non-autoregressive image captioning models have recently been proposed to significantly accelerate the speed of inference by generating all words in parallel. However, these non-autoregressive models inevitably suffer from large generation quality degradation since they remove words dependence excessively. To make a better trade-off between speed and quality, we introduce a semi-autoregressive model for image captioning (dubbed as SATIC), which keeps the autoregressive property in global but generates words parallelly in local. Based on Transformer, there are only a few modifications needed to implement SATIC. Experimental results on the MSCOCO image captioning benchmark show that SATIC can achieve a good trade-off without bells and whistles. Code is availab.e at https://***/YuanEZhou/satic. Estimating Noisy Class Posterior with Part-level lab.ls for Noisy lab.l Learning

In noisy lab.l learning, estimating noisy class posteriors plays a fundamental role for developing consistent classifiers, as it forms the basis for estimating clean class posteriors and the transition matrix. Existing methods typically learn noisy class posteriors by training a classification model with noisy lab.ls. However, when lab.ls are incorrect, these models may be misled to overemphasize the feature parts that do not reflect the instance characteristics, resulting in significant errors in estimating noisy class posteriors. To address this issue, this paper proposes to augment the supervised information with part-level lab.ls, encouraging the model to focus on and integrate richer information from various parts. Specifically, our method first partitions features into distinct parts by cropping instances, yielding part-level lab.ls associated with these various parts. Subsequently, we introduce a novel single-to-multiple transition matrix to model the relationship between the noisy and part-level lab.ls, which incorporates part-level lab.ls into a classifier-consistent framework. Utilizing this framework with part-level lab.ls, we can learn the noisy class posteriors more precisely by guiding the model to integrate information from various parts, ultimately improving the classification performance. Delving Globally into Texture and Structure for Image Inpainting

Image inpainting has achieved remarkable progress and inspired abundant methods, where the critical bottleneck is identified as how to fulfill the high-frequency structure and low-frequency texture information on the masked regions with semantics. To this end, deep models exhibit powerful superiority to capture them, yet constrained on the local spatial regions. In this paper, we delve globally into texture and structure information to well capture the semantics for image inpainting. As opposed to the existing arts trapped on the independent local patches, the texture information of each patch is reconstructed from all other patches across the whole image, to match the coarsely filled information, especially the structure information over the masked regions. Unlike the current decoder-only transformer within the pixel level for image inpainting, our model adopts the transformer pipeline paired with both encoder and decoder. On one hand, the encoder captures the texture semantic correlations of all patches across image via self-attention module. On the other hand, an adaptive patch vocabulary is dynamically established in the decoder for the filled patches over the masked regions. Building on this, a structure-texture matching attention module anchored on the known regions comes up to marry the best of these two worlds for progressive inpainting via a probabilistic diffusion process. Our model is orthogonal to the fashionable arts, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Attention and Transformer model, from the perspective of texture and structure information for image inpainting. Emerging technologies in sixth generation (6G) of wireless communications, such as terahertz communication and ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output, present promising prospects. Despite the high data rate potential of millimeter wave communications, millimeter wave (mmWave) communications in urban low altitude economy (LAE) environments are constrained by challenges such as signal attenuation and multipath interference. Specially, in urban environments, mmWave communication experiences significant attenuation due to buildings, owing to its short wavelength, which necessitates developing innovative approaches to improve the robustness of such communications in LAE networking. In this paper, we explore the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-carried intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to support low altitude mmWave communication. Specifically, we consider a typical urban low altitude communication scenario where a UAV-carried IRS establishes a line-of-sight (LoS) channel between the mobile users and a source user (SU) despite the presence of obstacles. Subsequently, we formulate an optimization problem aimed at maximizing the transmission rates and minimizing the energy consumption of the UAV by jointly optimizing phase shifts of the IRS and UAV trajectory. Given the non-convex nature of the problem and its high dynamics, we propose a deep reinforcement learning-based approach incorporating neural episodic control, long short-term memory, and an IRS phase shift control method to enhance the stability and accelerate the convergence. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm effectively resolves the problem and surpasses other benchmark algorithms in various performances. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Dual-view gaze target estimation in classroom environments has not been thoroughly explored. Existing methods lack consideration of depth information, primarily focusing on 2D image information and neglecting the latent 3D spatial context, which could lead to suboptimal transformation and cause the gaze cone to intersect with an incorrect object. This paper introduces a novel dual-view gaze target estimation method tailored for classroom settings, leveraging depth-enhanced spatial transformations. By formulating a depth-enhanced 2D space, our method uses depth-enhanced spatial transformation to accurately project students’ gaze cones to the teacher-oriented image. Additionally, we collected a dataset named DVSGE, specifically for student gaze target estimation in dual-view classroom images. Experimental results demonstrate significant performance improvements of 9.8% in AUC and 19.9% in L2-Distance for our method, surpassing existing methods.
