The applications and services are growing computation-intensive vary with the advent of wireless communication technology, whereas the computing resources and capabilities of mobile devices (MDs) are finite. Mobile edge computing (MEC) is a compelling way to offload applications from MDs to the cloudlets for performing, by means of deploying cloudlets nearby the MDs, which is capable of alleviating the computing burden of MDs and reducing the completion time of applications. However, MDs are irregularly dispersed in the Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (WMAN), and the service provider needs to recover the cost of the deployment and maintenance of cloudlets and achieve profitability. As a consequence, it poses a significant challenge to reasonably offload applications from MD to the proper cloudlet for MEC in the WMAN. In this paper, we study the user satisfaction of MDs, the profit of service provider and the resource utilization of cloudlets as a multi-objective optimization problem. In the sequel, we devise a profit-driven computation offloading method, under the collab.ration of MD-cloudlet-cloud, to obtain the optimal offloading strategy such that maximizes the user satisfaction of MDs, the profit of service provider and the resource utilization of cloudlets. To this end, we conduct comprehensive experiments to validate the efficiency of the proposed method. The numerical results demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm is prominent. © 2020 IEEE.

Context-Dependent Propagating-Based Video Recommendation in Multimodal Heterogeneous Information Networks

With the emergence of online social networks (OSNs), video recommendation has come to play a crucial role in mitigating the semantic gap between users and videos. Conventional approaches to video recommendation primarily focus on exploiting content features or simple user-video interactions to model the users’ preferences. Although these methods have achieved promising results, they fail to model the complex video context interdependency, which is obscure/hidden in heterogeneous auxiliary data from OSNs. In this paper, we study the problem of video recommendation in Heterogeneous Information Networks (HINs) due to its excellence in characterizing heterogeneous and complex context information. We propose a Context-Dependent Propagating Recommendation network (CDPRec) to obtain accurate video embedding and capture global context cues among videos in HINs. The CDPRec can iteratively propagate the contexts of a video along links in a graph-structured HIN and explore multiple types of dependencies among the surrounding video nodes. Then, each video is represented as the composition of the multimodal content feature and global dependency structure information using an attention network. The learned video embedding with sequential based recommendation are jointly optimized for the final rating prediction. Experimental results on real-world YouTube video recommendation scenarios demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods compared with strong baselines.

This paper explores the size-invariance of evaluation metrics in Salient Object Detection (SOD), especially when multiple targets of diverse sizes co-exist in the same image. We observe that current metrics are size-sensitive, where larger objects are focused, and smaller ones tend to be ignored. We argue that the evaluation should be size-invariant because bias based on size is unjustified without additional semantic information. In pursuit of this, we propose a generic approach that evaluates each salient object separately and then combines the results, effectively alleviating the imbalance. We further develop an optimization framework tailored to this goal, achieving considerable improvements in detecting objects of different sizes. Theoretically, we provide evidence supporting the validity of our new metrics and present the generalization analysis of SOD. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. The challenge of spatial resource allocation is pervasive across various domains such as transportation, industry, and daily life. As the scale of real-world issues continues to expand and demands for real-time solutions increase, traditional algorithms face significant computational pressures, struggling to achieve optimal efficiency and real-time capabilities. In recent years, with the escalating computational power of computers, the remarkable achievements of reinforcement learning in domains like Go and robotics have demonstrated its robust learning and sequential decision-making capabilities. Given these advancements, there has been a surge in novel methods employing reinforcement learning to tackle spatial resource allocation problems. These methods exhibit advantages such as rapid solution convergence and strong model generalization abilities, offering a new perspective on resolving spatial resource allocation problems. Therefore, this paper aims to summarize and review recent theoretical methods and applied research utilizing reinforcement learning to address spatial resource allocation problems. It provides a summary and comprehensive overview of its fundamental principles, related methodologies, and applied research. Photocatalytic methane combustion is a promising strategy to eliminate methane at ambient condition, but efficient photocatalysts are still lacking. Herein, we report that uniform anatase TiO2 nanocrystals predominantly enclosed with the {001} facets exhibit high activity in photocatalytic catalyzing methane combustion at RT in a flow-bed reactor. The photocatalytic methane reaction rate is 17.6 mmolCH4·h-1·gcatalyst-1, which is about 6 and 7 times of those catalyzed by TiO2 nanocrystals predominantly enclosed with the {100} facets or with the {101} facets. The valence band maximum and conduction band minimum were found to locate space-separately for TiO2-{001} nanocrystals terminated with the reconstructed (001)-(1 × 4) surface, at the surface and in the bulk, respectively. Meanwhile, the HOMO of methane adsorbed at the 4-fold-coordinated Ti4c site of reconstructed TiO2(001)-(1 × 4) surface is located at the valence band maximum of TiO2. Upon UV light illumination, TiO2-{001} nanocrystals exhibit spontaneous bulk-surface charge separation of photoexcited holes and electrons, leading to large concentrations of photoexcited holes on the surface, and subsequent facile interfacial hole transfer from TiO2(001) surface to adsorbed methane, leading to efficient methane combustion reaction. © 2022 American Chemical Society.

A Hemicellulose-First Approach for Paper Mulberry Biorefinery to Co-Produce Amino Acid-Rich Xylo-Oligosaccharides and Fermentable Monosaccharides

A hemicellulose-first strategy of acetic acid pretreatment was applied for the protein-rich paper mulberry (PM) to produce amino acid-rich xylo-oligosaccharide (XOS). In addition, the pretreated PM was further used to produce fermentable monosaccharides by enzymatic hydrolysis. Results showed a yield of 18.2% was achieved for XOS in hydrolyzate under the optimal pretreatment conditions (168 ℃, 68 min, 1% acetic acid). Besides, it’s found that the obtained hydrolyzate contains 14.3% amino acids degraded from the protein in PM. Furthermore, an additional endo-xylanase step was used to upgrade the XOS with DP (2-6) in the hydrolysate, which could increase XOS yield to 29.8%. Amino acid contents were unchanged after post-enzymatic hydrolysis. Besides, a glucose yield of 51.7% (11.5 g/L glucose) could be achieved for the pretreated PM after enzymatic hydrolysis. This work serves as proof of concept for creating higher-value XOS from biorefinery processes considering protein-enriched low-value biomass feedstocks. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper demonstrates the design and fabrication of three-dimensional(3 D) hexagonally ordered microbowl arrays(MBAs) decorated with Cu In S2 nanosheets for enhanced photoelectrochemical(PEC) performance. The 3 D MBAs are fabricated by a micro-fabrication technique. The ultrathin CuInS2 nanosheets are grown on the 3 D electrodes by solvothermal transformation of Cu film. The photocurrent density of 3 D photocathode(CuInS2@MBAs) is about two times higher than that of the planar counterpart(CuInS2@Planar). The improved PEC performance can be ascribed to the elevated light trapping ability and the increased surface area for loading photocatalysts. In addition, CdS quantum dots as cocatalysts are modified onto the Cu In S2 nanosheets to further enhance the PEC activity because the formed p-n heterojunction can accelerate the separation of photogenerated carriers. As a result, the 3 D photocathode of CuInS2/CdS@MBAs shows an optimal incident photon to current efficiency of 10% at the wavelength of400 nm. It is believed that this work can be generalized to design other hierarchical 3 D photoelectrodes for improved solar water splitting.

Objectives: The literature regarding the use of diffusion-tensor imaging-derived metrics in the evaluation of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is controversial. This study attempted to assess the feasibility of a deep-learning-based method for detecting alterations in diffusion kurtosis measurements associated with PD. Methods: A total of 68 patients with PD and 77 healthy controls were scanned using scanner-A (3 T Skyra) (dataSET-1). Meanwhile, an additional five healthy volunteers were scanned with both scanner-A and an additional scanner-B (3 T Prisma) (dataSET-2). Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) of dataSET-2 had an extra b shell compared to dataSET-1. In addition, a 3D-convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained from dataSET-2 to harmonize the quality of scalar measures of scanner-A to a similar level as scanner-B. Whole-brain unpaired t test and Tract-Based Spatial Statistics (TBSS) were performed to validate the differences between the PD and control groups using the model-fitting method and CNN-based method, respectively. We further clarified the correlation between clinical assessments and DKI results. Results: An increase in mean diffusivity (MD) was found in the left substantia nigra (SN) in the PD group. In the right SN, fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean kurtosis (MK) values were negatively correlated with Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) scales. In the putamen (Put), FA values were positively correlated with the H&Y scales. It is worth noting that these findings were only observed with the deep learning method. There was neither a group difference nor a correlation with clinical assessments in the SN or striatum exceeding the significance level using the conventional model-fitting method. Conclusions: The CNN-based method improves the robustness of DKI and can help to explore PD-associated imaging features. © 2021, The Author(s).

To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to apply IoT technologies to transform the popular Mahjong game into a Digital Mahjong System (DMS) for digitally performing cognitive assessments. People have started exploring digital cognitive assessment tools for better objectivity and simplification. However, most of these tools are not friendly for older adults. This paper aims to address this issue by integrating IoT technologies with Mahjong to make cognitive assessment simpler and more engaging for older adults. DMS has the following features: 1) integrating motion tracking devices into Mahjong tiles and transferring them into Digital Mahjong Tiles (DMTs), which can precisely capture their moving trajectory during the assessment, 2) using a Near Field Communication reader to configure DMT’s primary data, 3) supporting Over-The-Air Device Firmware Update that can be done remotely via Bluetooth, and 4) developing a charging base that can charge 16 DMTs simultaneously using Qi wireless charging standard. With further testing, the DMS has the potential to become a digital platform to implement and test various cognitive assessment tools integrating Mahjong elements. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In recent years, the complex equipment system presents the rapid development of integration and intelligence, and it is easy to break down when it works in bad environment for a long time. The maintenance support ability and comprehensive maintenance economic benefit of the complex equipment system play an important role in the defense ability. Therefore, in order to improve the combat readiness of equipment, solve the current situation of economic loss and low operation ability caused by insufficient or excessive maintenance. In this paper, a dynamic maintenance strategy for complex equipment system is proposed. The goal of this maintenance strategy is to minimize the average cost in a short period of time,to update the running state of the system and the execution time of fault maintenance in real time. Finally, the effectiveness of the dynamic maintenance strategy proposed in this paper is verified by the analysis of maintenance model parameters. The dynamic maintenance strategy proposed in this paper considers the operation state and economic cost of complex equipment system, which is more applicable to practical engineering application. © 2020 IEEE.
