IEEE 802.11 is a protocol standard widely used in wireless local area network (WLAN). For the distributed coordination function (DCF) of IEEE 802.11 MAC layer, the binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm has the defect of poor access fairness. To address this issue, the design criteria of backoff algorithm is generalized from the analysis of the key performance parameters of DCF, and then a logarithmic backoff (LB) algorithm based on dynamic contention window (CW) adjustment is proposed. The algorithm dynamically adjusts the initial value of CW and the backoff size of the CW by using the logarithmic function that takes the number of network competing nodes as the variable. Simulation results show that compared with the BEB algorithm, the LB algorithm can effectively improve the fairness performance and the throughput performance, and also reduce network delay.

The different approaches used for target decomposition (TD) theory in radar polarimetry are reviewed and three main types of theorems are introduced: those based on Mueller matrix, those using an eigenvector analysis of the coherency matrix, and those employing coherent decomposition of the scattering matrix. Support vector machine (SVM), as a novel approach in pattern recognition, has demonstrated success in many fields. A new algorithm of target classification, by combining target decomposition and the support vector machine, is proposed. To conduct the experiment, the polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are used. Experimental results show that it is feasible and efficient to target classification by applying target decomposition to extract scattering mechanisms, and the effects of kernel function and its parameters on the classification efficiency are significant.

We analyzed the seismic waveforms from the December 26, 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake recorded at broadband seismic stations in western Europe. Previous studies involving of the beam-forming technique and high frequency analysis suggest that the earthquake ruptured with a duration of around 500 s. This very long duration makes P wave overlap with later arrivals such as PP wave, which follows P in about 200 s. Since P waves are crucial for modeling earthquake processes, we propose an iterative method to separate P and PP waveforms. The separated P waveform confirms a second large energy release around 300 s after the initial rupture. The iterative signal separation technique is particularly useful for mixed signals that are not independent and the number of recording stations far exceeds number of mixed signal sources.
