Shot type is useful info.mation for semantic sports video analysis. Most existing approaches utilize predefined rules and domain knowledge to derive shot types in sports video. Although these methods have achieved promising results in some specific games, it is hard to extend them from one sport to another. To address this problem, we propose a generic approach to classify shots in sports video. Our approach utilizes bag of visual words model to represent key frame for each shot based on Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) feature points;either Support Vector Machine (SVM) or Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (PLSA) are then employed to classify key frame to determine shot type. As our approach relies little on domain knowledge, it can be more easily extended to different sports. We have evaluated our shot classification approach over five types of sports video and have achieved promising results. To show the usefulness and effectiveness of our shot classification, we apply the results of shot type to detect events in basketball video via a generative-discriminative model. In addition, we have observed that some common visual parts frequently appear across various shots in the same sport or even different but relevant sports. For instance, soccer and basketball are relevant sports in the sense of field-ball game. Motivated by this observation, we attempt to alleviate the problem of insufficient sports video data in some applications by sharing these visual parts across different but relevant kinds of sports. Manually annotated corpora are valuable but scarce resources, yet for many annotation tasks such as treebanking and sequence lab.ling there exist multiple corpora with different and incompatible annotation guidelines or standards. This seems to be a great waste of human efforts, and it would be nice to automatically adapt one annotation standard to another. We present a simple yet effective strategy that transfers knowledge from a differently annotated corpus to the corpus with desired annotation. We test the efficacy of this method in the context of Chinese word segmentation and part-of-speech tagging, where no segmentation and POS tagging standards are widely accepted due to the lack of morphology in Chinese. Experiments show that adaptation from the much larger People's Daily corpus to the smaller but more popular Penn Chinese Treebank results in significant improvements in both segmentation and tagging accuracies (with error reductions of 30.2% and 14%, respectively), which in turn helps improve Chinese parsing accuracy.

This paper presents a framework with two automatic tasks targeting large-scale and low quality sports video archives collected from online video streams. The framework is based on the bag of visual-words model using speeded-up robust features (SURF). The first task is sports genre categorization based on hierarchical structure. Following on the second task which is based on automatically obtained genre, views are classified using support vector machines (SVMs). As a consequence, the views classification result can be used in video parsing and highlight extraction. As compared with state-of-the-art methods, our approach is fully automatic as well as domain knowledge free and thus provides a better extensibility. Furthermore, our dataset consists of 14 sport genres with 6850 minutes in total. Both sport genre categorization and view type classification have more than 80% accuracy rates, which validate this framework's robustness and potential in web-based applications. Potential faults have greatly reduced the dependability of business processes, so fault diagnosis is becoming an important issue which aims at supporting self-healing service flow execution. The existing fault handling mechanism provided by BPEL can only identify the faults which have been pre-defined in standards or by users. However, unexpected faults are also the main cause of failures in service flow execution. Therefore an effective diagnosis approach is needed to solve this problem. In this paper, we propose a logic-based approach for diagnosing unexpected faults in Web service flows. This approach uses dynamic description logic (DDL) to model business processes, and diagnoses faults based on DDL reasoning. We provide the DDL-based diagnosing algorithm, which takes process description and runtime info.mation as inputs, and returns the related info.mation of possible faults as the result. Moreover, to improve the efficiency of online diagnosis, the incremental DDL-based diagnosing algorithm is presented. Experimental results on a demo system show the effectiveness of this approach.

A novel and efficient improving PWF method of speckle reduction in Polarimetrie SAR image by fusion based on nonsubsampled contourlet transform is proposed. First, the three complex elements (HH, HV, and W) of the Polarimetric scattering matrix were decorrelated to form a new elements matrix. Then we show that the sub-band decompositions of the three elements using nonsubsampled contourlet transform, and fusion factor is applied to the decomposed directional high-frequency coefficients to create new sub-band coefficients. Finally, we process and reconstruct multi-resolution contourlet coefficients according to the PWF method. Experimental results show that compared with PWF de-speckling algorithm, the proposed algorithm can achieve an excellent balance between suppresses speckle effectively and preserves image details, and the significant info.mation of original image like textures and contour details is well maintained. © 2008 IEEE.

The electroencephalogram (EEG) is widely used by physicians for interpretation and identification of physiological and pathological phenomena. However, the EEG signals are often corrupted by power line interferences noise and EMG induced noise. These artifacts strongly influence the utility of recorded EEGs and need to be removed for better clinical diagnosis. How to eliminate the effect of the noise is an important preprocessing problem in signal processing. In this paper, a novel and efficient power interferences reduction algorithm by the recently developed empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for the EEG signal is proposed. The principle of this method consists of decompositions of the EEG signal into a limited number of intrinsic mode function (IMF). This algorithm can effectively detect, separate and remove a wide variety of artifacts from EEG recording. Experimental results show that the proposed EMD-based algorithm is possible to achieve an excellent balance between suppresses power interference and EMG noise effectively and preserves as many target characteristics of original signal as possible.

Focused crawlers selectively retrieve Web documents that are relevant to a predefined set of topics. To intelligently make predictions and decisions about relevant URLs and web pages, different topic models have been introduced to represent topic-specific knowledge. Yet it is difficult to support semantic interoperability among different models. Moreover, some manually specified additional semantic info.mation, such as semantic markups and social annotations, could not be effectively used to improve crawling. This paper proposes to boost focused crawling with four kinds of semantic models and semantic info.mation, including thesauruses, categories, ontologies, and folksonomies. A statistical semantic association model is proposed to integrate different semantic models, represent heterogeneous semantic info.mation, and support semantic relevance computation. A focused crawling framework is developed which adopts both keyword based contents and different kinds of additional info.mation for relevance prediction and ranking. Experiments show that the proposed model and framework effectively integrates heterogeneous semantic info.mation for focused crawling. © 2008 IEEE.

In this paper, we describe a new reranking strategy named word lattice reranking, for the task of joint Chinese word segmentation and part-of-speech (POS) tagging. As a derivation of the forest reranking for parsing (Huang, 2008), this strategy reranks on the pruned word lattice, which potentially contains much more candidates while using less storage, compared with the traditional n-best list reranking. With a perceptron classifier trained with local features as the baseline, word lattice reranking performs reranking with non-local features that can't be easily incorporated into the perceptron baseline. Experimental results show that, this strategy achieves improvement on both segmentation and POS tagging, above the perceptron baseline and the n-best list reranking. © 2008. Licensed to the Coling.

In this paper, we present our solutions for the WikipediaMM task at ImageCLEF 2008. The aim of this task is to investigate effective retrieval approaches in the context of a large-scale and heterogeneous collection of Wikipedia images that are searched by textual queries (and/or sample images and/or concepts) describing a user's info.mation need. We first experimented with a text-based image retrieval approach with query extension, where the expansion terms are automatically selected from a knowledge base that is (semi-)automatically constructed from Wikipedia. We show how this open, constantly evolving encyclopedia can yield inexpensive knowledge structures that are specifically tailored to effectively enhance the semantics of queries. Encouragingly, the experimental results rank in the first place among all submitted runs. The second approach we experimented with is content-based image retrieval (CBIR), in which we first train 1-vs-all classifiers for all query concepts by using the training images obtained by Yahoo! search, and then treat the retrieval task as visual concept detection in the given Wikipedia image set. By comparison, this approach performs better than other submitted CBIR runs. Finally, we experimented with a cross-media image retrieval approach by combining and re-ranking text-based and content-based retrieval results. Despite the final experimental results were not formally submitted before the deadline, this approach performs remarkably better than the text-based retrieval or CBIR approaches.

We propose a cascaded linear model for joint Chinese word segmentation and partof- speech tagging. With a character-based perceptron as the core, combined with realvalued features such as language models, the cascaded model is able to efficiently utilize knowledge sources that are inconvenient to incorporate into the perceptron directly. Experiments show that the cascaded model achieves improved accuracies on both segmentation only and joint segmentation and part-of-speech tagging. On the Penn Chinese Treebank 5.0, we obtain an error reduction of 18.5% on segmentation and 12% on joint segmentation and part-of-speech tagging over the perceptron-only baseline. © 2008 Association for Computational Linguistics.
