Most of the previous works for web video topic detection(e.g., graph-based co-clustering method) always encounter the problem of real-time topic detection, since they all suffer from the high computation complexity. Therefore, a fast topic detection is needed to meet users' or administrators' requirement in real-world scenarios. Along this line, we propose a fast and effective topic detection framework, in which video streams are first partitioned into buckets using a time-window function, and then an incremental hierarchical clustering algorithm is developed, finally a video-based fusion strategy is used to integrate information from multiple modalities. Furthermore, a series of novel similarity metrics are defined in the framework. The experimental results on three months' YouTube videos demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. © 2012 IEEE.

Designing an efficient scheduling algorithm for P2PTV system

Scheduling the transmission of stream chunks is one of the main challenges in P2PTV system. In this paper, in order to improve the performance of push-based scheduling algorithm by exploiting chunk and peer's characteristics in the heterogeneous scenario, we first present a 2-stage buffer window model and define redistribution capacity factor to describe chunk and peer's characteristics. Then, we propose a new scheduling algorithm, called Urgent then Latest chunk / Redistribution Capacity peer (UL/RC). The UL/RC includes two components: UL chunk scheduler and RC peer scheduler. UL chunk scheduler uses the urgent chunk priority strategy to achieve low loss rate. RC peer scheduler employs high redistribution capacity peer priority strategy to achieve low delivery delay. Experimental results indicate that our scheduling algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art approaches. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Convolution kernels support the modeling of complex syntactic information in machinelearning tasks. However, such models are highly sensitive to the type and size of syntactic structure used. It is therefore an important challenge to automatically identify high impact sub-structures relevant to a given task. In this paper we present a systematic study investigating (combinations of) sequence and convolution kernels using different types of substructures in document-level sentiment classification. We show that minimal sub-structures extracted from constituency and dependency trees guided by a polarity lexicon show 1.45 point absolute improvement in accuracy over a bag-of-words classifier on a widely used sentiment corpus. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In the real world, images always have several visual objects instead of only one, which makes it difficult for traditional object recognition methods to deal with them. In this paper, we propose an ensemble method for multi-lab.l image classification. First, we construct an ensemble of k-lab.lset classifiers. A voting technique is then employed to make predictions for images based on the created ensemble of k-lab.lset classifiers. We evaluate our method on Corel dataset and demonstrate the precision, recall and F1 measure superior to the state-of-the-art methods. © 2012 IFIP International Federation for information processing.

Sparse representation has been validated to be a common phenomenon in many sensory neural systems, but its underlying neural mechanism still remains unclear. This paper proposes a neurally plausible model towards solving this problem. We find that lateral inhibition is the fundamental neural mechanism for sparse representation in the visual cortex, by which cortical neurons not only compete with each other so that the input signal can be represented sparsely but also cooperate with each other to make the representation more accurate. We integrate this result into the matching pursuit framework, a quite suitable solution for neural implementation, to illustrate how an input signal is sparsely represented in V1. Our simulation results show that lateral inhibition can evidently decrease the average squared error in the representation and then the input signal can be sparsely represented very well by the proposed algorithm. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

With the development of Internet and cloud computing, multimedia data, such as images and videos, has become one of the most common data types being processed. As the scale of multimedia data being still increasing, it is vitally important to efficiently extract useful information from such a huge amount of multimedia data. However, due to the complexity of the core algorithms, multimedia retrieval applications are not only data intensive but also computationally intensive. Therefore, it has been a major challenge to accelerate the processing speed of such applications to satisfy the real-time requirement. As Graphic processing Unit (GPU) has entered the general-propose computing domain (GPGPU), it has become one of the most popular accelerators for the applications with real-time requirements. In this paper, we parallelize a widely-used image retrieval algorithm called SURF on GPGPU, which is the core algorithm for many video and image retrieval applications. We first analyze the parallelism within SURF to guarantee that there are sufficient tasks being mapped to the large-scale computation resources in GPGPU. We then exploit some inherent GPGPU characteristics, such as 2D memory, to further boost the performance. Finally, we provide some optimization to the cooperation between CPU and GPGPU, which is generally ignored in previous designs. Experimental results show that our parallelization and optimization achieve a throughput of 340.5 frames/s on a NVIDIA GTX295 GPGPU, which is 15X faster than the maximal optimized CPU version. Compared to CUDA SURF, a state-of-the-art parallelization of SURF on GPGPU, our system achieves a speedup by a factor of 2.3X. © 2012 ACM.

Block transform coding using discrete cosine transform is the most popular approach for image compression. However, many annoying blocking artifacts are generated due to coarse quantization on transform coefficients independently. This paper proposes an effective blocking artifacts reduction method by estimating the transform coefficients from their quantized version. In the proposed scheme, we estimate the transform coefficients based on an image statistic model and non-local similarity among blocks in transform domain. The parameters used in our proposed scheme are discussed and adaptively selected. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed method significantly reduces blocking artifacts and improves the subjective and the objective quality of block transform coded images. © 2012 IEEE.

Web question answering (WQA) and Semantic Web services are currently two separate fields in intelligent web research, but in practical application, they are usually highly correlative. This article combines the techniques in Natural Language processing (NLP) and Hierarchical Task Network (HTN), and puts forward a WQA framework that is based on Semantic Web service composition. This framework uses NLP to analyze questions, describes the questions with predicate logic, maps them to relative Semantic Web services, and transforms question answering to a planning problem by constructing question domain and planning domain. It dynamically composites relative services making use of HTN system SHOP2, gets the planning series with Semantic Web services, and finally obtains the result that satisfied customers' need. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, an efficient two-stage segmentation framework was proposed to address the plant leaf image with overlapping phenomenon, which is built based on the leaf approximate symmetry and level set evolution theory. In the pre-segmentation stage, a straight line was manually set on the target leaf to approximate the principal leaf vein and the Local Chan-Vese (LCV) model was used on the global image region to help searching the so-called un-overlapping contour in target leaf. In the formal segmentation stage, the symmetry detection was performed based on the pre-defined approximated principal vein to obtain the narrow-band evolution region and the second initial contour. Next, the LCV model was once again used to find the complete target leaf contour in the narrow-band evolution region. Finally, experiments on some real leaf images with overlapping phenomenon have demonstrated the efficiency and robustness of the proposed segmentation framework. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents an extension of Chiang's hierarchical phrase-based (HPB) model, called Head-Driven HPB (HD-HPB), which incorporates head information in translation rules to better capture syntax-driven information, as well as improved reordering between any two neighboring non-terminals at any stage of a derivation to explore a larger reordering search space. Experiments on Chinese-English translation on four NIST MT test sets show that the HD-HPB model significantly outperforms Chiang's model with average gains of 1.91 points absolute in BLEU. © 2012 Association for Computational Linguistics.
