As a unique biometric that can be perceived at a distance, gait has broad applications in person authentication, social security and so on. Existing gait recognition methods suffer from changes in viewpoint and clothing and barely consider extracting diverse motion features, a fundamental characteristic in gaits, from gait sequences. This paper proposes a novel motion modeling method to extract the discriminative and robust representation. Specifically, we first extract the motion features from the encoded motion sequences in the shallow layer. Then we continuously enhance the motion feature in deep layers. This motion modeling approach is independent of mainstream work in building network architectures. As a result, one can apply this motion modeling method to any backbone to improve gait recognition performance. In this paper, we combine motion modeling with one commonly used backbone (GaitGL) as GaitGL-M to illustrate motion modeling. Extensive experimental results on two commonly-used crossview gait datasets demonstrate the superior performance of GaitGL-M over existing state-of-the-art methods.

Noisy annotations such as missing annotations and location shifts often exist in crowd counting datasets due to multi-scale head sizes, high occlusion, etc. These noisy annotations severely affect the model training, especially for density map-based methods. To alleviate the negative impact of noisy annotations, we propose a novel crowd counting model with one convolution head and one transformer head, in which these two heads can supervise each other in noisy areas, called Cross-Head Supervision. The resultant model, CHS-Net, can synergize different types of inductive biases for better counting. In addition, we develop a progressive cross-head supervision learning strategy to stabilize the training process and provide more reliable supervision. Extensive experimental results on Shang-haiTech and QNRF datasets demonstrate superior performance over state-of-the-art methods. Code is availab.e at https://***/RaccoonDML/CHSNet.

Facial attribute manipulation (FAM) aims to edit the semantic attributes of facial images according to the user’s requirements. Unfortunately, the majority of existing FAM methods struggle in meeting at least one of the two requirements: high reconstruction quality and high irrelevance preservation. To alleviate these two limitations, we propose a novel Disentangled nOn-linear latent navigation framework for FAM, termed DO-FAM. To promote the reconstruction quality, we leverage hypernetworks to fine-tune a pre-trained StyleGAN2 generator. To decouple entangled attributes, we propose a novel Disentangled nOn-Linear Latent transformation module, named DOLL, which consists of three components: (1) a decomposer to factorize input latent codes into two parts: attribute-related and attribute-unrelated; (2) a non-linear Latent Transformation Network (LTNet) to navigate the attribute-related latent codes to the target one with respect to the designed attribute(s); and (3) a latent classifier tasked with predicting latent codes’ attributes to guide the latent code navigation. Extensive experimental results on a widely-used benchmark facial editing dataset, CelebA-HQ, demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art methods.

Bidirectional Logits Tree: Pursuing Granularity Reconcilement in Fine-Grained Classification

This paper addresses the challenge of Granularity Competition in fine-grained classification tasks, which arises due to the semantic gap between multi-granularity lab.ls. Existing approaches typically develop independent hierarchy-aware models based on shared features extracted from a common base encoder. However, because coarse-grained levels are inherently easier to learn than finer ones, the base encoder tends to prioritize coarse feature abstractions, which impedes the learning of fine-grained features. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel framework called the Bidirectional Logits Tree (BiLT) for Granularity Reconcilement. The key idea is to develop classifiers sequentially from the finest to the coarsest granularities, rather than parallelly constructing a set of classifiers based on the same input features. In this setup, the outputs of finer-grained classifiers serve as inputs for coarser-grained ones, facilitating the flow of hierarchical semantic information across different granularities. On top of this, we further introduce an Adaptive Intra-Granularity Difference Learning (AIGDL) approach to uncover subtle semantic differences between classes within the same granularity. Zoom Out and Observe: News Environment Perception for Fake News Detection

Fake news detection is crucial for preventing the dissemination of misinformation on social media. To differentiate fake news from real ones, existing methods observe the language patterns of the news post and "zoom in" to verify its content with knowledge sources or check its readers' replies. However, these methods neglect the information in the external news environment where a fake news post is created and disseminated. The news environment represents recent mainstream media opinion and public attention, which is an important inspiration of fake news fabrication because fake news is often designed to ride the wave of popular events and catch public attention with unexpected novel content for greater exposure and spread. To capture the environmental signals of news posts, we "zoom out" to observe the news environment and propose the News Environment Perception Framework (NEP). For each post, we construct its macro and micro news environment from recent mainstream news. Then we design a popularity-oriented and a novelty-oriented module to perceive useful signals and further assist final prediction. Experiments on our newly built datasets show that the NEP can efficiently improve the performance of basic fake news detectors. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

FakeSV: A Multimodal Benchmark with Rich Social Context for Fake News Detection on Short Video Platforms

Short video platforms have become an important channel for news sharing, but also a new breeding ground for fake news. To mitigate this problem, research of fake news video detection has recently received a lot of attention. Existing works face two roadblocks: the scarcity of comprehensive and large-scale datasets and insufficient utilization of multimodal information. Therefore, in this paper, we construct the largest Chinese short video dataset about fake news named FakeSV, which includes news content, user comments, and publisher profiles simultaneously. To understand the characteristics of fake news videos, we conduct exploratory analysis of FakeSV from different perspectives. Moreover, we provide a new multimodal detection model named SV-FEND, which exploits the cross-modal correlations to select the most informative features and utilizes the social context information for detection. Extensive experiments evaluate the superiority of the proposed method and provide detailed comparisons of different methods and modalities for future works. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. The 3D generative adversarial network (GAN) inversion converts an image into 3D representation to attain high-fidelity reconstruction and facilitate realistic image manipulation within the 3D latent space. However, previous approaches face challenges regarding the trade-off between the reconstruction ability and editability. That is, reversing a real-world image to a low-dimensional latent code would inevitably lead to information loss, and achieving a near-perfect reconstruction using high-rate triplane representation often limits the ability to manipulate the image freely in the latent space. To address these issues, we propose a novel latent conditioning encoder-based framework with the alignment between the low-dimensional latent and high-dimensional triplane. A non-semantic guided editing strategy bridges the intrinsic relation between the latent condition and triplane generation, making it possible to edit the high-dimensional representation by latent manipulation. As a result, our method can achieve high-fidelity reconstruction and editing simultaneously by directly controlling the latent code. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach excels in reconstruction and editing quality compared to previous 3D inversion methods. Furthermore, our method can also edit even real faces with large poses and out-of-domain cases.

In recent years, most of the studies have shown that the generalized iterated shrinkage thresholdings (GISTs) have become the commonly used first-order optimization algorithms in sparse learning problems. The nonconvex relaxations of the \ell _{0} -norm usually achieve better performance than the convex case (e.g., \ell _{1} -norm) since the former can achieve a nearly unbiased solver. To increase the calculation efficiency, this work further provides an accelerated GIST version, that is, AGIST, through the extrapolation-based acceleration technique, which can contribute to reduce the number of iterations when solving a family of nonconvex sparse learning problems. Besides, we present the algorithmic analysis, including both local and global convergence guarantees, as well as other intermediate results for the GIST and AGIST, denoted as (A)GIST, by virtue of the Kurdyka-Lojasiewica (KL) property and some milder assumptions. Numerical experiments on both synthetic data and real-world databases can demonstrate that the convergence results of objective function accord to the theoretical properties and nonconvex sparse learning methods can achieve superior performance over some convex ones. © 2013 IEEE.

Interactive medical image segmentation methods have become increasingly popular in recent years. These methods combine manual lab.ling and automatic segmentation, reducing the workload of annotation while maintaining high accuracy. However, most current interactive segmentation frameworks are limited to 2D image data, and are not suitable for 3D image data due to the large size and high complexity of 3D data, as well as the challenges posed by information asymmetry and sparse annotation. In this paper, we propose SliceProp, an interactive segmentation framework that implements slice-wise lab.l Bidirectional Propagation (LBP) for 3D medical image segmentation. SliceProp extends the interactive 2D image segmentation algorithm to 3D image segmentation, and can handle 3D data with large size and high complexity. Moreover, equipped with a Backtracking Feedback Check (BFC) module, SliceProp effectively addresses the issues of information asymmetry and spatial sparse annotation in 3D medical image segmentation. Additionally, we adopt an uncertainty-based criterion to pri-oritize the slices to be refined interactively, which enhances the efficiency of the interaction process by enabling the model to focus on the regions with the most unreliable predictions. SliceProp is evaluated on two datasets and achieves promising results compared to state-of-the-art methods. © 2023 IEEE.
