Weakly supervised learning is an essential problem in computer vision tasks, such as image classification, object recognition, etc., because it is expected to work in the scenarios where a large dataset with clean lab.ls is not availab.e. While there are a number of studies on weakly supervised image classification, they usually limited to either single-lab.l or multi-lab.l scenarios. In this work, we propose an effective approach for weakly supervised image classification utilizing massive noisy lab.led data with only a small set of clean lab.ls (e.g., 5%). The proposed approach consists of a clean net and a residual net, which aim to learn a mapping from feature space to clean lab.l space and a residual mapping from feature space to the residual between clean lab.ls and noisy lab.ls, respectively, in a multi-task learning manner. Thus, the residual net works as a regularization term to improve the clean net training. We evaluate the proposed approach on two multi-lab.l datasets (OpenImage and MS COCO2014) and a single-lab.l dataset (Clothing1M). Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods, and generalizes well to both single-lab.l and multi-lab.l scenarios.

In this paper, a chunk-based multi-strategy machine translation method is proposed. Firstly, an English-Chinese bilingual tree-bank is constructed. Then, a translation strategy based on the chunk that combines statistics and rules is used in the translation stage. Through hierarchical sub-chunks, the input sentence is divided into a set of chunk sequence. Each chunk searches the corresponding instance in the corpus. Translation is completed by recursive refinement from chunks to words. Conditional Random Fields model is used to divide chunks. An experimental English-Chinese translation system is deployed, and experimental results show that the system performs better than the Systran system. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Zero-shot Object Detection (ZSD) aims to locate and classify instances of unseen categories. Existing methods focus on learning the mapping from visual space to semantic space, while the learning of discriminative representations for ZSD has not gained enough attention. In this paper, we demonstrate the necessity to learn discriminative semantic representations for ZSD, and propose a new end-to-end framework for this task. Our framework is able to learn discriminative semantic representations in an augmented space introduced for both user-defined and latent attributes, and refine the user-defined attributes with the help of unseen and external classes. The proposed method is extensively evaluated on two challenging ZSD datasets, and the experimental results show that our method significantly outperforms several existing methods.

Neural quality estimation with multiple hypotheses for grammatical error correction

Grammatical Error Correction (GEC) aims to correct writing errors and help language learners improve their writing skills. However, existing GEC models tend to produce spurious corrections or fail to detect lots of errors. The quality estimation model is necessary to ensure learners get accurate GEC results and avoid misleading from poorly corrected sentences. Well-trained GEC models can generate several high-quality hypotheses through decoding, such as beam search, which provide valuable GEC evidence and can be used to evaluate GEC quality. However, existing models neglect the possible GEC evidence from different hypotheses. This paper presents the Neural Verification Network (VERNet) for GEC quality estimation with multiple hypotheses. VERNet establishes interactions among hypotheses with a reasoning graph and conducts two kinds of attention mechanisms to propagate GEC evidence to verify the quality of generated hypotheses. Our experiments on four GEC datasets show that VERNet achieves state-of-the-art grammatical error detection performance, achieves the best quality estimation results, and significantly improves GEC performance by reranking hypotheses. Energy efficiency basically refers to how effectively energy can be utilised or consumed by any virtualised data centre giving cloud administrations. Since Genetic Algorithm (GA) is an acceptable method to solve the VM placement problem, this research formulates the Virtual Machine (VM) placement problem as a constrained optimisation problem. A considerable amount of residual resources is availab.e for each new VM allocation, however they are distributed across multiple active PMs, rendering them inefficient. Our research focuses on improving a data centre’s energy and time efficiency by devising a technique to decrease PM’s residual resources and make them more valuable. As the most time consuming element of a GA is calculating the fitness function, this paper presents a new fitness function to simplify the fitness function calculation in GA. The results are compared to the standard GA and First Fit Decreasing (FFD) algorithm. The findings reveals a 8% energy savings for our GA compared to FFD and a 66% reduction in our GA execution time compared to the standard GA for virtualised data centres. The simulation experiments are conducted on small-, medium- and large-scale of the google data centre to demonstrate the effectiveness of our GA. © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Face presentation attack detection (PAD) has drawn increasing attentions to secure face recognition (FR) systems which are being widely used in many applications from access control to smartphone unlock. Traditional approaches for PAD may lack good generalization capability into new application scenarios due to the limited number of subjects and data modality. In this work, we propose an end-to-end multi-modal fusion approach via spatial and channel attention to improve PAD performance on CASIA-SURF. Specifically, we first build four branches integrated with spatial and channel attention module to obtain the uniform features of different modalities, i.e., RGB, Depth, IR and the fused modality with 9 channels which concatenating three modalities. Subsequently, the features extracted from the four branches are concatenated and fed into the shared layers to learn more discriminative features from the fusion perspective. Finally, we get the classification confidence scores w.r.t. PAD or not. The entire network is optimized with the joint of the center loss and softmax loss and SGRD solver to update the parameters. The proposed approach shows promising results on the CASIA-SURF dataset.

Vehicle Re-identification(Re-ID) refers to the task of matching a specific vehicle across multiple non-overlapping cameras. Precise vehicle Re-ID suffers from two main challenges: (1) different vehicle identities with a similar appearance of the same type have a subtle inter-instance discrepancy, (2) one vehicle usually has large intra-instance differences due to viewpoint and illumination variations. To address these challenges, in this paper, we proposed an Attention-based Framework for Vehicle Re-ID named AFVR, which combines the benefits of both the cross-entropy loss function and the triplet loss function. Experimental results on two popular vehicle Re-ID benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method, compared with the state of the arts. © 2019 IEEE.

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is one kind of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) possessing disagreeable odor, with a low olfactory threshold around 20 ppb. Highly sensitive detection of DMS at room temperature (RT) is critically needed for emerging application with low power consumption, but it remains a significant challenge owing to its low reactivity. Herein, UV photoactivated titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) have been employed for detecting DMS at RT. An eco-friendly ultrasonic crushing solution spray technique was developed to prepare TiO2 based sensors. An ultrahigh response of 30–500 ppb DMS and a low experimental limit of detection (Ra/Rg = 2.7@50 ppb) could be achieved at RT under UV light activation. This work opens a new avenue to achieve highly sensitive, energy-efficient sensors for trace VSCs detection at RT in ambient odor monitoring. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

In this paper, we propose a method for facial expression recognition for in-the-wild videos. Our method combines Deep Residual Network (ResNet) and Bidirectional Recurrent Neutral Network with Long-Short-Term Memory Unit (BLSTM). This method won the 2 nd place in the seven basic expression classification track of Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild Competition held in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition (FG) 2020, achieving 66.9% accuracy and 40.8% final metric on the test set. We also visualize the learned attention maps and analyze the importance of different regions in facial expression recognition.

Next-generation sequencing is increasingly being adopted as a valuable method for the detection of somatic variants in clinical oncology. However, it is still challenging to reach a satisfactory level of robustness and standardization in clinical practice when using the currently availab.e bioinformatics pipelines to detect variants from raw sequencing data. Moreover, appropriate reference data sets are lacking for clinical bioinformatics pipeline development, validation, and proficiency testing. Herein, we developed the Variant Benchmark tool (VarBen), an open-source software for variant simulation to generate customized reference data sets by directly editing the original sequencing reads. VarBen can introduce a variety of variants, including single-nucleotide variants, small insertions and deletions, and large structural variants, into targeted, exome, or whole-genome sequencing data, and can handle sequencing data from both the Illumina and Ion Torrent sequencing platforms. To demonstrate the feasibility and robustness of VarBen, we performed variant simulation on different sequencing data sets and compared the simulated variants with real-world data. The validation study showed that the simulated data are highly comparable to real-world data and that VarBen is a reliable tool for variant simulation. In addition, our collab.rative study of somatic variant calling in 20 lab.ratories emphasizes the need for lab.ratories to evaluate their bioinformatics pipelines with customized reference data sets. VarBen may help users develop and validate their bioinformatics pipelines using locally generated sequencing data.
