Earthquakes pose significant perils to the built environment in urban *** avert the calamitous aftermath of earthquakes,it is imperative to construct seismic resilient *** to the intricacy of the concept of urban seismic resilience(USR),its assessment is a large-scale system engineering *** assessment of USR should be based on the notion of urban seismic capacity(USC)assessment,which includes casualties,economic loss,and recovery time as *** loss is also included in the assessment of USR in addition to these *** assessment indicator system comprising five dimensions(building and lifeline infrastructure,environment,society,economy,and institution)and 20 indicators has been devised to quantify *** analytical hierarchy process(AHP)is utilized to compute the weights of the criteria,dimensions,and indicators in the urban seismic resilience assessment(USRA)indicator *** the necessary data for a city are obtainable,the seismic resilience of that city can be assessed using this *** illustrate the proposed methodology,a moderate-sized city in China was selected as a case *** assessment results indicate a high level of USR,suggesting that the city possesses strong capabilities to withstand and recover from potential future earthquakes.

Application of low-temperature microwave radiation on the preparation of UHPC

This study investigates using low-temperature microwave radiation to prepare ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), aiming to contribute to sustainable and green concrete technology. Immediate microwave curing (IMC) accelerates the early hardening process, but rapid moisture loss challenges prolonged hydration and strength development. The research combines strength tests, X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and COMSOL simulations to understand these mechanisms. The findings reveal that microwaves' unique magnetic effects activate interactions between ions, leading to the formation of atypical phases such as hydrotalcite-like phase (HTlp), calcium silicide (CaSi2), and thaumasite-like phase (TSAlp). Unlike delayed microwave curing (DMC), IMC produces crystalline phases such as ettringite, HTlp, TSAlp, and gypsum, while calcium hydroxide (CH)—commonly observed in Portland cement hydration—is absent, reflecting distinct hydration pathways. These results suggest that IMC alters the hydration process and microstructure of UHPC. Curing regimes must address moisture retention to ensure sufficient hydration for improved mechanical and microstructural properties to enhance its performance. This study highlights the potential of IMC as a rapid curing method while emphasizing the need for strategies to mitigate its limitations. © The Author(s) 2025.

This paper reports testing and numerical modeling program on high strength concrete-filled S700 cold-formed high strength steel (HCFHSS) built-up box-section stub columns to investigate their cross-sectional behavior and resistance. Twelve stub column tests were performed on HCFHSS built-up box-sections designed with three grades of high strength concretes, i.e. C60, C90 and C120. The ultimate loads, axial load–end shortening curves and failure modes of all test specimens were reported. The numerical program was then performed, in which stub column finite element models were developed and validated against the experimental observations, accounting for the confinement effect. Parametric studies incorporating 160 finite models were carried out for generating further numerical data. The test and numerical results were used to evaluate the applicability of the existing European Code (EC4), American Specification (AISC) and Chinese standard (GB) to HCFHSS built-up box-sections. The EC4 yielded overly conservative yet consistent predictions with a mean overprediction of 32 %, while the AISC design provisions were generally conservative by 26 % on average and exhibited notable inaccuracy, particularly for slender sections. In contrast, the GB design provisions provided the most accurate but unsafe predictions. To address the shortcomings, modified design provisions were thus proposed for HCFHSS built-up box-section stub columns and shown to yield improved design accuracy and consistency. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

In the long-term service of life, structural columns may experience mechanical performance degradation due to environmental erosion, various hazards, and functional modifications. This study proposes a novel concrete column reinforcement method utilizing square corrugated steel jackets as external confinement components, which significantly enhances both bearing capacity and ductility of original members. To investigate the mechanical performance improvement mechanisms and load-carry mode, 10 axially compressed short column specimens were designed. Detailed analyses were conducted surrounding the effects of connection methods for corrugated sheets, corrugated steel thickness, and damage levels on load-displacement curves, as well as stress and strain development patterns. A computational model for ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced sections was established. key findings include: (1) The use of corrugated steel sleeves can enhance the ultimate bearing capacity of the original short columns by 34.6% to 67.3%. (2) Considering that the confinement effect of square sleeves is not optimal, it is more material-efficient to use thinner corrugated steel plates to achieve similar results. (3) There is no significant difference in the effects of connection types on mechanical performance. (4) The cracking and softening of damaged concrete can enhance the confinement effect in corrugated steel-strengthened reinforced concrete columns. (5) The confined concrete strength model can be used to accurately predict the ultimate bearing capacity. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Octagonal hollow section, a novel type of polygonal hollow sections, combines the advantages of traditional circular and rectangular hollow sections while mitigating their limitations, with higher load-carrying capacities over rectangular hollow sections due to smaller plate element widths and better constructability over circular hollow sections owing to multiple flat faces providing operation platforms for welded and bolted connections. The present paper reports experimental and numerical studies on the local buckling behaviour of stainless steel octagonal hollow sections under axial compression. The testing programme included axial compression tests on fifteen stainless steel octagonal hollow section stub column specimens with five different outer cross-section dimensions and three different wall thicknesses, as well as tensile coupon tests and initial local geometric imperfection measurements. In parallel with the testing programme, a numerical modelling programme was carried out, with finite element models developed and validated against the test results and afterwards adopted to carry out parametric studies. The test and numerical data were used to evaluate the applicability of relevant design rules, as specified in the European code, American specification and ASCE standard, to stainless steel octagonal hollow sections. The evaluation results generally revealed that (i) the three sets of codified slenderness limits were unsafe when used for cross-section classification of stainless steel hexagonal hollow sections, (ii) the European code and American specification resulted in overall accurate and consistent cross-section compression resistance predictions for stainless steel octagonal hollow sections, but still with some overly conservative predictions for non-slender cross-sections and slightly unsafe predictions for those at the boundary of non-slender and slender cross-sections, and (iii) the ASCE standard provided overall scattered and inaccurate cross-sec

The current China national standard Code for design of timber structures GB50005-2003 has not been revised for over a decade, and features incapability and shortcomings for the current design practice. To facilitate the revision of the code, theoretical and experimental studies were carried out on lateral resistance of bolt connections. Formulae for the coefficient of effective dowel bearing length were derived employing European Yield Modes (EYM). Test results reveal the applicability of the formulae derived, and the fact that plasticity of the bolts is not fully developed. The resistance partial factors for design were derived so as to obtain equivalent reliability level with current design code. In terms of reliability level, a concise comparison was made between the proposed design formulae for Standard GB 50005-2017 and the European and American codes. © WCTE 2018 Committee.

A new method to infill the opening in the RC precast fabricated concrete shear wall was applied in China. In this paper, three geometrically identical RC precast fabricated shear wall specimens were experimented under constant axial load and quasi-statie cyclic lateral loading. The methods to infill the opening of the wall were respectively integration infill, masonry infill and without infill. Hysteretic curves, skeleton curves, failure process, variation of rebar strain, stiffness, ductility and energy-dissipating capacity were obtained. The results showed that the integration shear wall owns good seismic performance. Its bearing capacity, stiffness, energy-dissipating capacity are excellent while ductility is relatively poor. Masonry infilled wall and wall without infill also own good seismic performance. Meanwhile, numerical simulation of three specimens was conducted by using finite element (FE) software OpenSees. Based on the reasonable modeling and the application of multi-layer shell element, the FE results were verified with the experimental results.

Steel-recycled aggregate concrete composite beams (SRACCBs) are preferred components for the recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) application. Due to their superior spanning ability and load-bearing capacity, steel-concrete composite beams (SCCBs) are typically more slender than traditional beam components, which makes them more sensitive to concrete shrinkage and creep. Furthermore, the incorporation of recycled aggregate (RA) significantly increases the shrinkage and creep deformation of the concrete. Therefore, the long-term properties of RAC significantly affect the application of SRACCBs. In fact, the shrinkage and creep of RAC are closely related to the boundary conditions, and the sealing effect of the steel deck and decorative layer can directly influence the long-term deformation of SCCBs. However, relevant research is currently unavailab.e. In this context, a 500-day long-term performance test of continuous SRACCB (4 m × 2 spans) was conducted in this paper. The test quantified the effects of incorporating RA and installing decorative layers on the mid-span deflection and end relative slip of the SRACCBs. By considering the cracking, shrinkage, and creep of RAC and long-term slip at the interface, a Direct Stiffness Method Finite Element Model (DSMFEM) for SRACCBs was established. Test results indicate that using 100 % RA can increase the mid-span deflection of the specimen by 27.9 % and the relative slip by 54.8 %; a 90-day installation of the decoration layer can lead to a 16.3 % decrease in the mid-span deflection and an 11.5 % decrease in the relative slip. The verification results of 12 sets of experimental data indicate that the proposed DSMFEM has high computational efficiency and can effectively predict the deflection and relative slip of simply-supported and continuous SCCBs. The maximum error in predicting the final mid-span deflection is 6.8 % for specimens with long-term loads and 18.4 % for specimens without loads.

Since the 9.11 incident, the impact of large commercial airliners on nuclear power plants and other important national facilities has attracted worldwide attention. The safety of flying objects hitting nuclear containment has become one of the important research topics in the field of nuclear power generation. In this paper, the impact resistance of non-prestressed and prestressed concrete slab. is studied through detailed experiments and numerical studies. By non-bonding rear sheeting, prestress of about 10MPa is applied to concrete slab. measuring 1400mm×600mm, which are then hit by hemispherical steel hammers (590kg) at heights of 2m and 4m above the center of the span. The impact force, displacement, and the reinforced concrete slab.and the prestressed concrete slab.are compared. In LS-DYNA finite element software, the CSCM concrete structure model is used to study the numerical values of the experiments carried out. It has been found that with the increase of impact energy, the deformation produced by reinforced concrete slab. increases and is not recoverable. On the other hand, after applying presession, the impact force of prestressed concrete slab. was increased by 53.8% and displacement was reduced by 45% due to the increase of the stiffness of the plate. The maximum reproduction deviation of the impact force and displacement values is 17% and 14%, respectively. The research results will be applied to the structural dynamic impact protection design of nuclear power plant containment. Copyright © 2022 by ASME.

Safety is an inevitable issue in all kinds of construction sites. The most effective way to insure human's safety is wearing safety helmet, thus whether wearing or not is a main problem of safety monitoring. This paper proposed an approach using deep learning-based computer vision techniques to detect workers (i.e., not wearing safety helmet) from image sequences shot by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Firstly training and testing dataset were created using lab.l tools as a size of 300×300. Then a fine-tune method based on single shot multibox detector network was employed to get high accuracy of detection. The effectiveness and accuracy of methods were validated and discussed. Finally, some visualization work has been done for a deeper understanding of the network. © APWSHM 2018. All rights reserved.
