To study the methods for determination of residual mortar content adhered to recycled aggregate, this paper aims at three methods which are apparent density method, quench hot method and sulfate solution freezing-thawing method. These methods were compared by experiments and their basic principles were also respectively stated. The principles of the latter two methods are similar, which are to separate the residual mortar and aggregate by external factors. But the effects of the sulfate solution freezing-thawing method is better than that of quench hot method. Finally, the best method is chosen to provide some theoretical evidence and research methods in studies and uses of recycled concrete. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Steel-concrete composite slab., as efficient modern structural components, can incorporate coarse recycled aggregates (CRA) and fine recycled aggregates (FRA) as green alternatives to sand and gravel. However, existing studies have not sufficiently investigated the effects of recycled coarse and fine aggregates as well as loading history on the longitudinal shear capacity of composite slab., and the applicability of current design methods specified in existing codes for recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) composite slab. has yet to be systematically validated. Therefore, this study systematically investigates recycled aggregates (RAs) composite slab. through experimental testing and numerical modeling. Three full-scale specimens with closed steel decking were tested under varying RAs replacement ratios (coarse/fine aggregates) and sustained load durations (0–500 days). A validated finite element (FE) model incorporating interfacial bond-slip behavior was developed, enabling 136 parametric simulations to assess m-k and partial shear connection ( PSC ) approaches following Eurocode 4. The results show: (1) RAs incorporation reduces initial stiffness and cracking load by 14.3 % and 27.1 %, respectively, but negligibly affects ultimate shear capacity; (2) 500-day sustained loading enhances shear capacity, stiffness, and cracking load by 9.3 %, 26.3 %, and 16.1 % through concrete aging; (3) Both Eurocode 4 methods demonstrate satisfactory applicability for RAs composite slab.design. These results provide critical validation for sustainable composite slab.engineering using recycled materials.

To revise the national Code for Design of Timber structures GB 50005-2003, the methods for calculation of the stability coefficient in timber design codes of various countries were compared and analysed. Considering the characteristics of modern wood products, new and unified equations for calculation of the stability coefficient applicable to members made of various wood products were proposed, in which the traditional treatments of stability in the China national timber design code were kept, giving the newly issued Standard for Design of Timber structures GB 50005-2017 continuity and consistency. The constants in the unified equations were determined through regression with respect to different wood products, and the error in calculation of the stability coefficient was basically within 10%. This study facilitates reasonable design of members made of imported wood products in addition to the domestic timber. © WCTE 2018 Committee.

For providing likelihood to avoid the cracking of slab.on-ground of industrial plants and logistics warehouses, this investigation is on two aspects of materials and structure. In terms of materials, the mechanical properties, shrinkage, tensile strength, fiber distribution and the concrete stress-strain curves of PP-fiber reinforced alkali-activated materials were tested, with particular emphasis on the improvement in toughness after fiber reinforcement. In terms of structure, with using a commercial software package, the entire 3-dimensional finite element models were linear elastic structures. The prestressed structural layer and the surface layer were respectively made of fiber-reinforced and nonfiber- reinforced alkali-activated concrete, the interaction between two layers was considering by inplane shear experiment and the elastic modulus and poisson's ratio obtained from the stress-strain curve are taken as parameters of surface concrete. The sliding layer is used to reduce friction and the foundation is considered to be the Winkler model. The unidirectional and bidirectional mechanical properties and the load transfer efficiency (LTE) of the precast prestressed pavement after assembly were discussed under the complex stress state, including wheel load, stacking load, temperature stress and uneven settlement of foundation. © APFIS 2019. Optical fiber sensors have been proven that they have potential as ultrasonic guided waves sensor for structural health monitoring and damage detection. They can be used to receive acoustic emission signals from dynamic structural damages or guided waves propagating in waveguide and excited by ultrasonic actuators. Optical fiber sensors based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer were investigated in this work. Their sensing properties were explored experimentally using Lamb waves excited by a piezoelectric wafer in an aluminum plate. Spiral shape with different size was selected to increase their sensitivity. Experiments were also conducted to examine the voltage responses received by this type of sensor, and investigate results of tuning frequency. © 2015, International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure, ISHMII. The large-span spatial hub structure is an important urban lifeline project with complex structure form and many types of internal non-structural components. As one of the main non-structural components, the safety of the piping system is important to ensure the normal use of the overall function of the large span hub structure. Once damage occurs to the piping system under the action of earthquake, it will affect the traffic operation and urban rescue, resulting in incalculab.e casualties and property damage. To assess the impact of diverse connection locations on the piping system’s response, this study investigates acceleration and response amplification factors at various positions within the reticulated shell structure. Through this analysis, we underscore the critical need to consider the spatial coupling effect for the piping system within the reticulated shell structure. In this study, the seismic response and damage modes of the internal piping system in a prevalent type of reticulated shell structures are investigated. This is achieved by establishing a coupled finite element model of the reticulated shell structure and the piping system. Three distinct damage modes of the piping system and their corresponding computational signs are identified, facilitating the creation of fragility curves for the piping system. The results highlight significant variation in the damage degree of the piping system at different locations. Additionally, past studies have shown a notable probability of damage to piping systems, even under very slight ground shaking, emphasizing the necessity for careful consideration. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Comparative study and optimal selection for different cable-stiffened latticed shells

The cable-stiffened latticed shell can be constructed in varied structural forms by diverse types of single-layer latticed shells and cable-strut systems. So, to provide references for model selection, this paper studied the efficient combination of latticed shells and cable-strut systems in different boundary conditions and proposed a performance evaluation method. The general modeling process was illustrated firstly, and several new structural forms with folded curved surfaces were proposed. Then, based on the improved equilibrium matrix theory, the force-finding analysis was carried out for the initial state, which can guarantee actual mechanical properties in the numerical model. Thus, the overall stiffness, the bearing capacity, and the cable reinforcement effect were obtained through the nonlinear stability analysis. And for the optimal selection from multiple structural forms, AHP-TOPSIS was used to judge the latticed shell system for the first time. The comprehensive structural performances were evaluated and ranked by this multi-attribute decision-making method. Finally, the results showed that the complicated cable-strut system could not necessarily lead to higher structural efficiency. Regardless of the cable-strut layouts, the spherical cable-stiffened latticed shell had a high bearing capacity when the ribbed grid was adopted. For the cylindrical structure, the folded latticed shell divided by orthogonal grids maximized the role of in-plane cables and was considered the best choice. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

Influence of Mix Proportioning Parameters and Curing Regimes on the Properties of Ultra-High Strength Alkali-Activated Concrete

This study investigates the influence of mix proportioning parameters and curing regimes on the material properties of alkali-activated binder-based ultra-high strength concrete (AAB-UHSC). The effects of five groups of mix proportioning parameters (i.e., fly ash replacement ratio, silica fume replacement ratio, alkali to binder ratio, water glass modulus, and steel fiber content) and three curing regimes(i.e., ambient curing, standard curing, and hybrid curing) on the workability, compressive strength, flexural strength and microstructure development of AAB-UHSC were systematically evaluated. The results indicated that increasing the steel fiber and silica fume dosage negatively affected the flowability of freshly mixed AAB-UHSC. There existed an optimal alkali-to-binder ratio and water glass modulus in terms of flowability, compressive strength, and flexural strength, but the fly ash replacement ratio had a complex effect on the material performance of the AAB-UHSC. The microstructures of the specimens cured in hybrid curing regimes were denser, and fewer cracks were observed, which resulted in higher strength compared to specimens cured under ambient curing and standard curing conditions. The three types of curing regimes adopted barely alter the phases and molecular bonds of hydration products based on the XRD and FTIR results. In addition, the correlations between the compressive strength of the AAB-UHSC obtained under ambient curing conditions, standard curing conditions, and obtained under hybrid curing and standard curing conditions were analyzed, and the fitted results had higher correlation coefficients (R2). © 2023, The Authors. This paper presents the effects of elevated temperatures and sustained load on the bond behavior between basalt fiber reinforced polymer sheet and concrete substrate. Three test replicates were performed through a single lap shear bond test. The temperatures were ranging from room temperature to 60 °C with the interval of 10 °C, and the sustained load was set as 35% peak load of the control specimens. Specimens with sustained load were exposed to elevated temperatures up to 3 h, and the failure test was performed at the elevated temperatures. Sustained load at elevated temperatures shows a significant effect on the bonding behavior. The specimens exposed at 30, 40, 50 and 60 °C increased the peak load by 9.6%, 31.2%, 29.6% and 20.2%, respectively. It was recognized that the shear stress redistributed at the concrete-BFRP interfaces during the test. The failure mode changed from concrete cohesion to adhesive failure with the increase of the temperatures. The variation of the failure patterns is attributed to the softening of the adhesion bond at elevated temperatures. © APFIS 2015. All rights reserved.
