Analyzing the latent relationship between parallel news articles and stock prices has become an important research issue which attracts more and more researchers' attention. It is believed that news articles have impact on prices. Many approaches address this issue either from the documents' sentiment point of view or from the word frequency point of view. In this paper, we propose a new model which captures the density of news articles and mines the latent relationship by employing information entropy to explore the news impact on the market. An empirical study is conducted to analyze market news articles' impact on stock prices. We compare our results with the traditional model which is based on support vector machine (baseline). Experimental results show that our proposed news density model has a better performance on predicting relatively long term news impact. © 2010 IEEE.

Sparse representation provides a new method of generating a super-resolution image from a single low resolution input image. An over-complete base for sparse representation is an essential part of such methods. However discovering the over-complete base with efficient representation from a large amount of image patches is a difficult problem. We make efforts in sparse representation and its implementation to solve the problem. In the representation, image patches are decomposed into two structure and texture components represented by the over-complete bases of their own spaces so that their high-level features can be captured by the bases. In the implementation, a prior knowledge about low resolution images generation is combined to the typical base construction for high construction quality. Finally a super-resolution construction based on multi-space sparse representation is proposed. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly improve the PSNR and visual quality of reconstructed high-resolution image. Copyright 2010 ACM.

The image data are obtained by a variety of multimedia, information equipment, which include amount of information, extensive coverage, and redundancy in ubiquitous computing paradigm. In order to make use of these information reasonably and efficiently, it is necessary to fuse such massive data, therefore the multi-sensor image information fusion become a key technology to ubiquitous computing. A new approach of image data fusion based on fuzzy neural network (FNN) is presented in this paper. Here, neural network is a parallel information processing model, there are more adaptive and self-organization, and can accomplish the complexity of real-time computing and mass data retrieval, it demonstrate its unique superiority of image understanding, pattern recognition and the handling of incomplete information. In the new approach, fuzzy theory has the advantages such as: easy-to-understand, flexible and inclusive of non-precise data, as well as using expert knowledge and based on the natural language. The fuzzy neural network system developed by us has used in multi-sensor image fusion, proved that the fusion is fast, effective, good, and can meet the real-time requirements of ubiquitous computing. ©2010 IEEE.

The requirement for supporting DVD-like functions raises new challenges to the design of P2P VoD systems. The uncertainty of frequent user DVD-like interactivity makes it difficult to ensure user perceived Quality of Experience (QoE) for real-time streaming services over distributed self-organized P2P overlay networks. Most existing solutions are based on the unreasonable assumption that all the users in P2P VoD systems have the same preference. Few attention has been paid to personalization, which accommodates the differences between users. In this paper, we present a video model which characterizes the personalization information for users' contents and preferences. Based on this model, we develop APEX, a practical personalization framework for P2P VoD applications. APEX makes the personalization practical by using a hybrid architecture which leverages the offline pattern mining on the server side and online collab.rative filtering on the peer side. Furthermore, APEX helps peers to personalize navigation, prefetching and membership management, aiming at improving QoE for DVD-like functions by reducing response latency and optimizing content sharing. Both theoretical analysis and comprehensive simulations show that APEX outperforms most existing schemes in terms of accumulated hit ratio, response latency, and searching efficiency.

In this paper, a system named QuickDiagram is proposed for quick diagram input and understanding. With a user sketching a (complete or partial) component/symbol or a wire (connecting two components) of the diagram, the system can recognize and beautify it immediately. After the entire diagram is finished, certain understandings can be obtained. Especially, the following two methods are used to interpret the recognized diagram: 1) Nodal Analysis on resistive circuits, and 2) generation of PSpice codes from the recognized diagrams. Experiments on a few sketched circuit diagrams show that the results are robust and accurate for both recognition and understanding. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Fairness is a convenient and popular tool when modelling and specifying concurrent systems, many fairness notions exist in the literature. However, there was no fully satisfactory abstract characterisation of fairness. In order to show fairness definitions are reasonable, a probabilistic framework for fairness notions was proposed, where concurrent systems were modelled inductively in the theorem prover Isabelle/HOL, and a general fairness notion was defined. It was shown that the set of fair infinite executions of concurrent systems has probability 1. Finally, the usage of this framework was argued. All formalisations and proofs have been carried out with Isabelle/HOL/Isar. © 2010 IEEE.

The morphable modeling method of reconstructing 3D human face is based on a single given image, and the model fitting is ambiguous owing to the lack of depth information and geometry constraints between images. In this paper, we introduce a new face reconstruction method from multiple views based on the morphable model. The morphable face model is matched with multiple face images from different views. Using the multi-view geometry constraints, the ambiguity is efficiently eliminated and more realistic results are provided. We test our algorithm on the MPI face database and real images from our multi-camera system. The experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed method. © 2010 IEEE.

Multi-source heterogeneous information fusion is an extremely challenging problem because of the complex and highly irregular nature of environment. We consider decision fusion problem in the presence of m-dependent evidences in this paper. A new evidence fusion approach for decision of proactive service has introduced, which is extending of Class D-S Evidence method. We applied this approach in our active space project for seamless nomadic service of pervasive computing paradigm, good results have been attained. The validity of approach of this paper has been tested. ©2010 IEEE.

Requirements engineering is essentially a social collab.rative activity in which involved stakeholders have to closely work together to communicate, elicit, negotiate, define, confirm, and finally come up with the requirements for the system to be implemented or upgraded. In the development of large and complex systems, with a huge number of uncertain stakeholders, the requirements engineering process becomes a challenging task due to overwhelming and dynamic social interactions, tradeoffs, and collective decisions made by above stakeholders. Traditional approaches and techniques are deficient in supporting this kind of social interactions in requirements-related activities, and managing the evolving requirements and their traceability caused by the social interactions. This paper proposes to address the challenges in the pre-requirements analysis of large and complex systems by employing the techniques from collective intelligence based on Web 2.0 tools and technologies, which is composed of three steps: first, obtain collective requirements knowledge through collab.rative tagging by stakeholders;second, transform collab.rative requirement tags into requirement ontologies;third, support collective requirement decision-making (i.e., collective intelligence) based on the requirement ontologies through requirements reasoning. © 2010 ACM.

Clusters provide powerful computing performance is at cost of huge energy consumption. Scheduling a parallel application with a set of precedence-constrained tasks on cluster is challenging because of high communication cost. Although task duplication based scheduling algorithm is applied to minimize communication overhead, most of them only consider scheduling lengths, however completely ignoring energy consumption of cluster. Based on this consideration, we propose a novel Energy-Performance Balanced Task Duplication based Clustering Scheduling algorithm (EPBTDCS for short) in homogenous clusters which can significantly saving energy by judiciously shrinking communication energy consumption when assigning parallel tasks to computing nodes. This algorithm not only reduces energy dissipation in cluster without significantly degrading system performance, but also gets an optimal scheduling with a simple and loose condition. We conducted extensive experiments based on real-world SPEC fpppp and Sparse Matrix Solver parallel tasks applications running on a simulated cluster. By comparing with task duplication-based scheduling (TDS for short) and non-duplication-based scheduling (MCP for short) algorithms to prove our algorithm can save energy consumption greatly. © 2010 IEEE.
