This study aimed to explore the relationship between physiological performance indicators and both intrinsic and extrinsic cognitive loads during a space robot grasping task, which involves teleoperation requiring high levels of spatial and motor coordination, attention, and decision-making. The hypothesis posited that operational mode would influence extrinsic cognitive load, while task difficulty would impact intrinsic cognitive load. Additionally, a correlation was expected between physiological performance indicators and cognitive load. To test this, a 2x2 factorial experiment was conducted with independent variables being task difficulty (high vs. low) and operational mode (joystick vs. keys), and dependent variables including cognitive load, performance, and learning outcomes. Subjective scales were used to assess intrinsic and extrinsic cognitive load, and physiological data were collected to examine their correlation with cognitive load. The results indicate that operational mode and task difficulty significantly affect cognitive load in space exploration contexts. Specifically, the 'Joystick' mode was associated with higher extrinsic cognitive load, likely due to the challenges it presents in precise control during complex tasks. Performance metrics showed that attention allocation varied by operational mode, with the 'Joystick' mode requiring greater focus on the side view and end-effector, in line with cognitive load theory. Physiological metrics, particularly pupil diameter and EEG data, were crucial in understanding these effects;a decrease in pupil diameter with increased task difficulty reflected heightened intrinsic cognitive load. EEG data further revealed significant variations in brain activity across frontal, prefrontal, and occipital regions, with distinct changes in alpha, theta, and beta frequency bands, highlighting the substantial impact of cognitive load on neural processes. Event Detection (ED) aims to recognize instances of specified types of event triggers in text. Existing graph neural network-based models have achieved promising progress to alleviate this problem by capturing different orders of syntactic information, but they are limited by two issues. First, the long-range syntactic information between words is not fully exploited. Second, they ignore the semantic information provided by dependency labels which provide linguistic knowledge that is useful to ED. As a result, we proposed a label-enhanced dense graph convolutional network that employs dense connectivity and Graph Transformer Networks (GTN) to learn a flexible selection of edge types and composite relations between the words. Each layer can make use of the collective knowledge of dense blocks in order to model syntactic dependencies over long distances through dense connectivity. The proposed model achieves state-of-the-art performance for ED on common datasets after extensive experiments are conducted to show its advantages.

NSPG-Miner: Mining Repetitive Negative Sequential Patterns

Sequential pattern mining (SPM) with gap constraints (or repetitive SPM or tandem repeat discovery in bioinformatics) can find frequent repetitive subsequences satisfying gap constraints, which are called positive sequential patterns with gap constraints (PSPGs). However, classical SPM with gap constraints cannot find the frequent missing items in the PSPGs. To tackle this issue, this paper explores negative sequential patterns with gap constraints (NSPGs). We propose an efficient NSPG-Miner algorithm that can mine both frequent PSPGs and NSPGs simultaneously. To effectively reduce candidate patterns, we propose a pattern join strategy with negative patterns which can generate both positive and negative candidate patterns at the same time. To calculate the support (frequency of occurrence) of a pattern in each sequence, we explore a NegPair algorithm that employs a key-value pair array structure to deal with the gap constraints and the negative items simultaneously and can avoid redundant rescanning of the original sequence, thus improving the efficiency of the algorithm. To report the performance of NSPG-Miner, 11 competitive algorithms and 11 datasets are employed. The experimental results not only validate the effectiveness of the strategies adopted by NSPG-Miner, but also verify that NSPG-Miner can discover more valuable information than the state-ofthe-art algorithms. Radio frequency fingerprint (RFF) identification (RFFI) is a promising technique for device authentication at the physical layer of the communication stacks. However, practical challenges, particularly in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenar-ios, and the lack of comprehensive studies on open-set recognition hinder the widespread application of RFFI. This paper presents an unsupervised open-set RFF identification algorithm designed to address the robustness challenges associated with low SNR. Our approach integrates the Noise2Noise method for de noising, drawing inspiration from its successful applications in image and speech processing. The proposed framework utilizes an image-based autoencoder (AE) to extract features from the differential constellation trace figure (DCTF) of the signals after Noise2Noise denoising. The open-set recognition task is performed by cosine distance measurement. We carried out extensive experimental evaluation involving 18 ZigBee devices and a USRP software-defined radio platform. Our proposed method can achieve a gain up to 25% under low SNRs.

GKG-LLM: A Unified Framework for Generalized knowledge Graph Construction

The construction of Generalized knowledge Graph (GKG), including knowledge graph, event knowledge graph and commonsense knowledge graph, is fundamental for various natural language processing tasks. Current studies typically construct these types of graph separately, overlooking holistic insights and potential unification that could be beneficial in computing resources and usage perspectives. However, a key challenge in developing a unified framework for GKG is obstacles arising from task-specific differences. In this study, we propose a unified framework for constructing generalized knowledge graphs to address this challenge. First, we collect data from 15 sub-tasks in 29 datasets across the three types of graphs, categorizing them into in-sample, counter-task, and out-of-distribution (OOD) data. Then, we propose a three-stage curriculum learning fine-tuning framework, by iteratively injecting knowledge from the three types of graphs into the Large Language Models. Extensive experiments show that our proposed model improves the construction of all three graph types across in-domain, OOD and counter-task data. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Unveiling Funded Research: Impact and Dual Innovation

In the relentless pursuit of scientific advancement, comprehending the profound impact and innovation nature inherent in funded research projects assumes paramount significance. To illuminate this matter, I delve into the realm of research supported by the esteemed National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the distinguished National Science Foundation (NSF). Our evaluative framework encompasses a spectrum of metrics, including the 5-year citation, normalized citation, and citation to patents, as markers of research impact. Moreover, I embrace ex-ante innovation (Novelty) and ex-post innovation (Disruption) as dual indispensable yardsticks for evaluating the innovative nature of research projects. Novelty denotes the manifestation of atypical combinations of existing knowledge, while Disruption signifies the extent of paradigm-shifting potential and the ability to exert a disruptive influence on future research endeavors. First, the analysis reveals that funded research projects manifest a conspicuously heightened impact in comparison to their non-funded counterparts. Second, I uncover a noteworthy finding, namely that funded research demonstrates significantly higher levels of ex-ante innovation (Novelty). However, in a surprising twist, the investigation also uncovers that funded research exhibits significantly lower levels of ex-post innovation (Disruption). Additionally, I undertake a meticulous scrutiny of the robustness of the research findings by scrutinizing patterns across disparate years and fields. This comprehensive analysis further unveils inconspicuous heterogeneity, thus substantiating the multifaceted nature of funded research and the vast potential for its innovation across various disciplines and temporal dimensions. © 2023, The Authors. Extracting emergency events from a large amount of unstructured information is essential for improving early warning and emergency response. Existing event extraction methods for specialist fields often rely on well-designed syntactic dependencies or external knowledge graphs, which can provide high accuracy in their specialist fields. However, these approaches may have poor generalization capabilities and are difficult to apply directly to the emergency field. In addition, most existing methods ignore the interdependencies between event triggers and event arguments, which may be crucial semantic features for event extraction. To solve these problems, we propose a Chinese emergent event extraction method based on contrastive learning with event semantic features(CNEmergEE). Firstly, the proposed approach automatically expands the pre-trained model's vocabulary on a domain corpus. Then, continuing learning on the same corpus allows the model to complete domain adaptation. Finally, we use contrast learning to enable models to learn semantic representations of events. Experimental results on the CEC (Chinese Emergency Corpus) dataset show that our approach achieves better improvement. © 2023 IEEE.

With the advancement of deep learning models nowadays, they have successfully applied in the semi-supervised medical image segmentation where there are few annotated medical images and a large number of unlabeled ones. A representative approach in this regard is the semi-supervised method based on consistency regularization, which improves model training by imposing consistency constraints (perturbations) on unlabeled data. However, the perturbations in this kind of methods are often artificially designed, which may introduce biases unfavorable to the model learning in the handling of medical image segmentation. On the other hand, the majority of such methods often overlook the supervision in the Encoder stage of training and primarily focus on the outcomes in the later stages, potentially leading to chaotic learning in the initial phase and subsequently impacting the learning process of the model in the later stages. At the meanwhile, they miss the intrinsic spatial-frequency information of the images. Therefore, in this study, we propose a new semi-supervised medical image segmentation approach based on frequency domain aware stable consistency regularization. Specifically, to avoid the bias introduced by artificially setting perturbations, we first utilize the inherent frequency domain information of images, including both high and low frequencies, as the consistency constraint. Secondly, we incorporate supervision in the Encoder stage of model training to ensure that the model does not fail to learn due to the disruption of the original feature space caused by strong augmentation. Finally, extensive experimentation validates the effectiveness of our semi-supervised approach.

Nature-inspired population-based stochastic search algorithms (SSA) have demonstrated effectiveness in solving many real-world dynamic optimization problems (DOPs), such as dynamic optimal power flow (DOPF) problems. The basic idea of solving DOPs using SSAs is to “track the moving optima”, rather than solving the changed problems from scratch. Its hidden assumption is that the problems are slightly changed in general, and it is expected that the search process can be accelerated by learning from past search experiences. However, the hidden assumption that the current search process can always benefit from previous search experiences might not be true for certain cases. For example, if the current problem is not similar to any of its previous problems, the historical solutions might not be helpful for the current search. To reduce such negative transfer, the following issues are worthy of study: how to choose which historical problems to learn from, and how to determine the degree of learning from historical problems. To solve the above problems, we propose a dynamic processing framework based on fuzzy rules from the perspective of incorporating human knowledge for optima tracking. The experimental results on the DOPF problems show that the SSA with the proposed optima tracking strategy outperforms other comparative algorithms. Deep learning approaches for multimodal aspect-level sentiment classification (MALSC) often require extensive data, which is costly and time-consuming to obtain. To mitigate this, current methods typically fine-tune small-scale pretrained models like BERT and BART with few-shot examples. While these models have shown success, Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) offer significant advantages due to their greater capacity and ability to understand nuanced language in both zero-shot and few-shot settings. However, there is limited work on fine-tuning LVLMs for MALSC. A major challenge lies in selecting few-shot examples that effectively capture the underlying patterns in data for these LVLMs. To bridge this research gap, we propose an acquisition function designed to select challenging samples for the few-shot learning of LVLMs for MALSC. We compare our approach, Verification and ZERO-shot feedback acquisition (VERO), with diverse acquisition functions for few-shot learning in MALSC. Our experiments show that VERO outperforms prior methods, achieving an F1 score improvement of up to 6.07% on MALSC benchmark datasets. © 2025, Association for the Advancement of Artificial.
