Visual Feedback in Eye-Controlled Interaction: A Study on the Applicability for Pointing and Selection Tasks Across Different Vibration Environments

Because of the advantages of short learning time and strong collaborative ability, eye-control interaction is considered to be a promising human-computer interaction method. In the process of eye-controlled interaction, the operator needs to choose more effective visual feedback to accurately understand the operation process, so as to reduce the wrong operation and the interaction burden. Meanwhile, vibration, as an unavoidable interaction environment in life, affects the performance of different visual feedback modalities to a great extent. Based on the above reasons, we want to explore the performance of different visual feedback in different vibration environments. First, we have investigated the performance of cross cursor and circle cursor in static, low vibration and high vibration environments to accomplish the pointing task. Second, we have investigated the performance of the time-delayed selection confirmation mechanism and selection sub-selection reconfirmation mechanism in the selection task under three vibration states. We found that in the pointing task, the circular cursor has a lower perceived workload and a longer onset of visual fatigue in the static environment. It turns out that the circular cursor is more suitable for the pointing task. In the selection task, the time-delayed selection mechanism had higher selection accuracy, lower perceptual workload, and higher subjective preference compared to the selection sub-selection reconfirmation mechanism, although there was no significant difference in the time to fatigue onset. By comparing quantitative ranking with qualitative contributions, we reveal that academic assessment has to put real contributions ahead of quantitative indicators and that rankings have nothing to do with universities’ and their libraries’ true values. The greatness of a university lies in its impacts on the progress for human knowledge and the promotion for social development. Although ranking of universities by way of quantitative indicators can reflect some information, we should pay more attention to qualitative contributions.

Disentangled Representation Learning with Transmitted Information Bottleneck

Encoding only the task-related information from the raw data, i.e., disentangled representation learning, can greatly contribute to the robustness and generalizability of models. Although significant advances have been made by regularizing the information in representations with information theory, two major challenges remain: 1) the representation compression inevitably leads to performance drop;2) the disentanglement constraints on representations are in complicated optimization. To these issues, we introduce Bayesian networks with transmitted information to formulate the interaction among input and representations during disentanglement. Building upon this framework, we propose DisTIB (Transmitted Information Bottleneck for Disentangled representation learning), a novel objective that navigates the balance between information compression and preservation. We employ variational inference to derive a tractable estimation for DisTIB. This estimation can be simply optimized via standard gradient descent with a reparameterization trick. Moreover, we theoretically prove that DisTIB can achieve optimal disentanglement, underscoring its superior efficacy. To solidify our claims, we conduct extensive experiments on various downstream tasks to demonstrate the appealing efficacy of DisTIB and validate our theoretical analyses. Generated method of transcriptional regulatory networks remains an important research in biology. Many approaches have been proposed to construct transcriptional regulatory networks. However, with the increase of ChIP-seq and RNA-seq data, the speed of constructing transcriptional regulation networks is still a challenge. Moreover, parallel computing lacks application in constructing gene regulatory networks through the analysis of the relationships between transcription factors (TFs) and target genes (TGs). Therefore, in this paper, a parallel generated method of transcriptional regulatory networks was proposed. First, two datasets, Michigan Cancer Foundation – 7 (MCF-7) and Cardiomyocytes (CM) were applied. Then, a parallel method was used to generate transcriptional regulatory network with their transcription factors (TFs) and target genes (TGs). Finally, experimental results showed that 61% regulatory relations in MCF-7 were validated in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), while 29% results needed further experimental verification. Besides, 56% regulatory relations in CM were consistent with GEO, while 33% results were not yet verified. Furthermore, speed of parallel algorithm was faster than traditional serial algorithm in generating transcriptional regulatory networks. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

PWG-IDS: An intrusion detection model for solving class imbalance in IIoT networks using generative adversarial networks

With the continuous development of industrial IoT (IIoT) technology, network security is becoming more and more important. And intrusion detection is an important part of its security. However, since the amount of attack traffic is very small compared to normal traffic, this imbalance makes intrusion detection in it very difficult. To address this imbalance, an intrusion detection system called pretraining Wasserstein generative adversarial network intrusion detection system (PWG-IDS) is proposed in this paper. This system is divided into two main modules: 1) In this module, we introduce the pretraining mechanism in the Wasserstein generative adversarial network with gradient penalty (WGAN-GP) for the first time, firstly using the normal network traffic to train the WGAN-GP, and then inputting the imbalance data into the pre-trained WGAN-GP to retrain and generate the final required data. 2) Intrusion detection module: We use LightGBM as the classification algorithm to detect attack traffic in IIoT networks. The experimental results show that our proposed PWG-IDS outperforms other models, with F1-scores of 99% and 89% on the 2 datasets, respectively. And the pretraining mechanism we proposed can also be widely used in other GANs, providing a new way of thinking for the training of GANs. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Early interlaced videos usually contain multiple and interlacing and complex compression artifacts, which significantly reduce the visual quality. Although the high-definition reconstruction technology for early videos has made great progress in recent years, related research on deinterlacing is still lacking. Traditional methods mainly focus on simple interlacing mechanism, and cannot deal with the complex artifacts in real-world early videos. Recent interlaced video reconstruction deep deinterlacing models only focus on single frame, while neglecting important temporal information. Therefore, this paper proposes a multiframe deinterlacing network joint enhancement network for early interlaced videos that consists of three modules, i.e., spatial vertical interpolation module, temporal alignment and fusion module, and final refinement module. The proposed method can effectively remove the complex artifacts in early videos by using temporal redundancy of multi-fields. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can recover high quality results for both synthetic dataset and real-world early interlaced videos. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Low-rank representation is powerful for recovering and clustering the subspace structures, but it cannot obtain deep hierarchical information due to the single-layer mode. In this paper, we present a new and effective strategy to extend the single-layer latent low-rank models into multiple-layers, and propose a new and progressive Deep Latent Low-Rank Fusion Network (DLRF-Net) to uncover deep features and structures embedded in input data. The basic idea of DLRF-Net is to refine features progressively from the previous layers by fusing the subspaces in each layer, which can potentially obtain accurate features and subspaces for representation. To learn deep information, DLRF-Net inputs shallow features of the last layers into subsequent layers. Then, it recovers the deeper features and hierarchical information by congregating the projective subspaces and clustering subspaces respectively in each layer. Thus, one can learn hierarchical subspaces, remove noise and discover the underlying clean subspaces. Note that most existing latent low-rank coding models can be extended to multilayers using DLRF-Net. This paper explores a novel multi-modal alternating learning paradigm pursuing a reconciliation between the exploitation of uni-modal features and the exploration of cross-modal interactions. This is motivated by the fact that current paradigms of multi-modal learning tend to explore multi-modal features simultaneously. The resulting gradient prohibits further exploitation of the features in the weak modality, leading to modality competition, where the dominant modality overpowers the learning process. To address this issue, we study the modality-alternating learning paradigm to achieve reconcilement. Specifically, we propose a new method called ReconBoost to update a fixed modality each time. Herein, the learning objective is dynamically adjusted with a reconcilement regularization against competition with the historical models. By choosing a KL-based reconcilement, we show that the proposed method resembles Friedman's Gradient-Boosting (GB) algorithm, where the updated learner can correct errors made by others and help enhance the overall performance. The major difference with the classic GB is that we only preserve the newest model for each modality to avoid overfitting caused by ensembling strong learners. Furthermore, we propose a memory consolidation scheme and a global rectification scheme to make this strategy more effective. Experiments over six multi-modal benchmarks speak to the efficacy of the method. We release the code at https://***/huacong/ReconBoost.

Q&A driven conversational recommendation integrating multiple interest modeling

The conversational recommendation aims to provide users with recommendations in an interaction form of “System Ask-User Respond”. Existing studies rarely consider combining users’ multi-interest at the attribute level for preference modeling, and conduct inefficient conversational recommendation strategy learning, which affects the recommendation performance and conversation performance. To this end, we proposed a Q-A driven conversational recommendation method integrating multiple interest modeling. Specifically, we integrate the user’s positive and negative feedback to model a session dynamic graph, then use the signed graph convolutional network for graph representation learning, and we model multiple interest sequences based on the attention mechanism, then obtain the user interest state representation by fusing of sequence representations to solve the problem of insufficient user preference representation. Besides, we proposed a personalized decision space optimization method to narrow the range of action candidates and train the model with a multi-agent reinforcement learning method integrating hierarchical decision debiasing to solve the problem of poor conversational recommendation strategy learning effect. Experimental results on three public datasets, LastFM, Yelp, and Book, show that compared with existing conversational recommendation methods, our method demonstrates consistent performance improvement across all datasets. In addition, the results of ablation experiments verify the effectiveness of each component in our method.

Single Image Deraining task aims at recovering the rain-free background from an image degraded by rain streaks and rain accumulation. For the powerful fitting ability of deep neural networks and massive training data, data-driven deep SID methods obtained significant improvement over traditional ones. Current SID methods usually focus on improving the deraining performance by proposing different kinds of deraining networks, while neglecting the interpretation of the solving process. As a result, the generalization ability may still be limited in real-world scenarios, and the deraining results also cannot effectively improve the performance of subsequent high-level tasks (e.g., object detection). To explore these issues, we in this paper re-examine the three important factors (i.e., data, rain model and network architecture) for the SID problem, and specifically analyze them by proposing new and more reasonable criteria (i.e., general vs. specific, synthetical vs. mathematical, black-box vs. white-box). We also study the relationship of the three factors from a new perspective of data, and reveal two different solving paradigms (explicit vs. implicit) for the SID task. We further discuss the current mainstream data-driven SID methods from five aspects, i.e., training strategy, network pipeline, domain knowledge, data preprocessing, and objective function, and some useful conclusions are summarized by statistics. Besides, we profoundly studied one of the three factors, i.e., data, and measured the performance of current methods on different datasets through extensive experiments to reveal the effectiveness of SID data. Finally, with the comprehensive review and in-depth analysis, we draw some valuable conclusions and suggestions for future research. © 2021, CC BY.
