Existing neural collaborative filtering (NCF) recommendation methods suffer from severe sparsity problem. knowledge Graph (KG), which commonly consists of fruitful connected facts about items, presents an unprecedented opportunity to alleviate the sparsity problem. However, pure NCF models can hardly model the high-order connectivity in KG, and ignores complex pairwise correlations between user/item embedding dimensions. To address these problems, we propose a novel knowledge graph enhanced Neural Collaborative Recommendation (K-NCR) framework, which effectively combines user–item interaction information and auxiliary knowledge information for recommendation task into three parts: (1) For items, the proposed propagating model learns the representation of item entity. It recursively aggregates information from its multi-hop neighbours in KG, and employs an attention mechanism to discriminate the importance of the relation type to mine users’ potential preferences. (2) For users, another heterogeneous attention weights are leveraged to strengthen the embedding learning of users. (3) The user and item embeddings are then fed into a newly designed two-dimensional interaction map with convolutional hidden layers to model the complex pairwise correlations between their embedding dimensions explicitly. Extensive experimental results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our K-NCR framework. © 2020

Passive metal reflectors for communication enhancement have appealing advantages such as ultra low cost, zero energy expenditure, maintenance-free operation, long life span, and full compatibility with legacy wireless systems. To unleash the full potential of passive reflectors for wireless communications, this paper proposes a new passive reflector architecture, termed flexible reflector (FR), for enabling the flexible adjustment of beamforming direction via the FR placement and rotation optimization. We consider the multi-FR aided area coverage enhancement and aim to maximize the minimum expected receive power over all locations within the target coverage area, by jointly optimizing the placement positions and rotation angles of multiple FRs. To gain useful insights, the special case of movable reflector (MR) with fixed rotation is first studied to maximize the expected receive power at a target location, where the optimal single-MR placement positions for electrically large and small reflectors are derived in closed-form, respectively. It is shown that the reflector should be placed at the specular reflection point for electrically large reflector. While for area coverage enhancement, the optimal placement is obtained for the single-MR case and a sequential placement algorithm is proposed for the multi-MR case. Moreover, for the general case of FR, joint placement and rotation design is considered for the single-/multi-FR aided coverage enhancement, respectively. Numerical results are presented which demonstrate significant performance gains of FRs over various benchmark schemes under different practical setups in terms of receive power enhancement. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we study transformers for text-based games. As a promising replacement of recurrent modules in Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks, the transformer architecture could be treated as a powerful state representation generator for reinforcement learning. However, the vanilla transformer is neither effective nor efficient to learn with a huge amount of weight parameters. Unlike existing research that encodes states using LSTMs or GRUs, we develop a novel lightweight transformer-based representation generator featured with reordered layer normalization, weight sharing and block-wise aggregation. The experimental results show that our proposed model not only solves single games with much fewer interactions, but also achieves better generalization on a set of unseen games. Furthermore, our model outperforms state-of-the-art agents in a variety of man-made games.

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF mMIMO) systems serve the user equipments (UEs) by geographically distributed access points (APs) by means of joint transmission and reception. To limit the power consumption due to fronthaul signaling and processing, each UE should only be served by a subset of the APs, but it is hard to identify that subset. Previous works have tackled this combinatorial problem heuristically. In this paper, we propose a sparse distributed processing design for CF mMIMO, where the AP-UE association and long-term signal processing coefficients are jointly optimized. We formulate two sparsity-inducing mean-squared error (MSE) minimization problems and solve them by using efficient proximal approaches with block-coordinate descent. For the downlink, more specifically, we develop a virtually optimized large-scale fading precoding (V-LSFP) scheme using uplink-downlink duality. The numerical results show that the proposed sparse processing schemes work well in both uplink and downlink. In particular, they achieve almost the same spectral efficiency as if all APs would serve all UEs, while the energy efficiency is 2-4 times higher thanks to the reduced processing and signaling. The fifth generation(5G) wireless communication networks are being deployed worldwide from 2020 and more capabilities are in the process of being standardized, such as mass connectivity, ultra-reliability,and guaranteed low latency. However, 5G will not meet all requirements of the future in 2030 and beyond, and sixth generation(6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligence level and security, etc. To meet these requirements, 6G networks will rely on new enabling technologies, i.e., air interface and transmission technologies and novel network architecture, such as waveform design, multiple access, channel coding schemes, multi-antenna technologies, network slicing, cell-free architecture, and cloud/fog/edge computing. Our vision on 6G is that it will have four new paradigm shifts. First, to satisfy the requirement of global coverage, 6G will not be limited to terrestrial communication networks, which will need to be complemented with non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) communication networks, thus achieving a space-airground-sea integrated communication network. Second, all spectra will be fully explored to further increase data rates and connection density, including the sub-6GHz, millimeter wave(mmWave), terahertz(THz),and optical frequency bands. Third, facing the big datasets generated by the use of extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, large numbers of antennas, wide bandwidths, and new service requirements, 6G networks will enable a new range of smart applications with the aid of artificial intelligence(AI) and big data technologies. Fourth, network security will have to be strengthened when developing 6G networks. This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances and future trends in these four aspects. In the Internet of things (IoT) era, vehicles and other intelligent components in an intelligent transportation system (ITS) are connected, forming vehicular networks (VNs) that provide efficient and safe traffic and ubiquitous access to various applications. However, as the number of nodes in an ITS increases, it is challenging to satisfy a varied and large number of service requests with different quality of service (QoS) and security requirements in highly dynamic VNs. Intelligent nodes in VNs can compete or cooperate for limited network resources to achieve the objective for either an individual or a group. Game theory (GT), a theoretical framework designed for strategic interactions among rational decision makers sharing scarce resources, can be used to model and analyze individual or group behaviors of communicating entities in VNs. This paper primarily surveys the recent developments of GT in solving various challenges of VNs. This survey starts with an introduction to the background of VNs. A review of GT models studied in the VNs is then introduced, including the basic concepts, classifications, and applicable vehicular issues. After discussing the requirements of VNs and the motivation of using GT, a comprehensive literature review on GT applications in dealing with the challenges of current VNs is provided. Furthermore, recent contributions of GT to VNs that are integrated with diverse emerging 5G technologies are surveyed. Finally, the lessons learned are given, and several key research challenges and possible solutions of applying GT in VNs are outlined. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Deep neural network (DNN) compression can reduce the memory footprint of deep networks effectively, so that the deep model can be deployed on the portable devices. However, most of the existing model compression methods cost lots of time, e.g., vector quantization or pruning, which makes them inept to the real-world applications that need fast online computation. In this paper, we therefore explore how to accelerate the model compression process by reducing the computation cost. Then, we propose a new deep model compression method, termed Dictionary Pair-based data-Free Fast DNN Compression, which aims at reducing the memory consumption of DNNs without extra training and can greatly improve the compression efficiency. Specifically, our proposed method performs tensor decomposition on the DNN model with a fast dictionary pair learning-based reconstruction approach, which can be deployed on different layers (e.g., convolution and fully-connection layers). Given a pre-trained DNN model, we first divide the parameters (i.e., weights) of each layer into a series of partitions for dictionary pair-based fast reconstruction, which can potentially discover more fine-grained information and provide the possibility for parallel model compression. Then, dictionaries of less memory occupation are learned to reconstruct the weights. Extensive experiments on popular DNNs (i.e., VGG-16, ResNet-18 and ResNet-50) showed that our proposed weight compression method can significantly reduce the memory footprint and speed up the compression process, with less performance loss.

Real-world data in emerging applications may suffer from highly-skewed class imbalanced distribution, however how to deal with this kind of problem appropriately through deep learning needs further investigation. In this paper, we mainly propose a novel cross-entropy based loss function, referred to as Additive Scale Loss (ASL), for deep representation learning and imbalanced classification. To deal with the class imbalanced problem, ASL aims at increasing the loss in case of misclassification, which can avoid the superimposed loss values caused by the large amount of easily classified data in the unbalanced database to dominate the loss value of misclassified data. Moreover, in real-world applications, one data source may be used for multiple scenarios, such as classification and embedding learning, however training two separable models to handle these problems is costly, especially in deep learning area. To tackle this issue, we present and integrate a discriminative inter-class separation term into ASL, and propose a discriminative ASL (D-ASL), which can not only improve the classification performance, but also obtain discriminative representations simultaneously. The discriminative inter-class separation term is general, and can be easily integrated to other loss functions, such as CE and FL, as the byproducts. Finally, a new deep convolutional neural network equipped with D-ASL and a fully-connected (FC) layer is proposed, which can classify the imbalanced image data and obtain the discriminative representations at the same time. Extensive experimental results verified the superior performance of our method.

Recent studies have shown the promise of direct data processing on hierarchically-compressed text documents. By removing the need for decompressing data, the direct data processing technique brings large savings in both time and space. However, its benefits have been limited to data traversal operations; for random accesses, direct data processing is several times slower than the state-of-the-art baselines. This paper presents a set of techniques that successfully eliminate the limitation, and for the first time, establishes the feasibility of effectively handling both data traversal operations and random data accesses on hierarchically-compressed data. The work yields a new library, which achieves 3.1× speedup over the state-of-the-art on random data accesses to compressed data, while preserving the capability of supporting traversal operations efficiently and providing large (3.9×) space savings.
