Assessing the degree of impact from iceberg activities on penguin colonies of Clarence Island

During August and September 2023,three giant icebergs,each bigger than Paris,successively grazed Clarence Island in the northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula,a home to a population of over 100000 *** incident may serve as a clarion call for the increasing iceberg calving due to global warming and its subsequent impact on the Antarctic *** we investigate this unexpected event and employ historical records and probabilistic analyses of iceberg grounding to assess the degree of impact on penguin colonies of Clarence *** the eleven colonies,there is one with low impact,eight with medium impact,and two with high *** low-impact colony,Cape Lloyd,is located in the northern part of the island,while the high-impact colonies,False Ridge and Pink Pool,are in the *** eight medium-impact colonies are distributed along both the eastern and western coasts of the *** study provides essential support for evaluating the impact of iceberg activity on penguin *** argue that penguin colonies located in areas prone to iceberg drift,such as Clarence Island,may become more vulnerable to the heightened risk of iceberg collisions or groundings in the warming ***,we hope the public will become more aware of the grave impacts of climate change on penguins and underscore the urgent need for effective conservation strategies.

Asymptotic stability of many numerical schemes for phase-field modeling

The numerical stability of nonlinear equations has been a long-standing concern and there is no standard framework for analyzing long-term qualitative behavior. In the recent breakthrough work [XX23], a rigorous numerical analysis was conducted on the numerical solution of a scalar ODE containing a cubic polynomial derived from the Allen-Cahn equation. It was found that only the implicit Euler method converge to the correct steady state for any given initial value u0 under the unique solvability and energy stability. But all the other commonly used second-order numerical schemes exhibit sensitivity to initial conditions and may converge to an incorrect equilibrium state as tn → ∞. This indicates that energy stability may not be decisive for the long-term qualitative correctness of numerical solutions. We found that using another fundamental property of the solution, namely monotonicity instead of energy stability, is sufficient to ensure that many common numerical schemes converge to the correct equilibrium state. This leads us to introduce the critical step size constant h∗ = h∗(u0, ϵ) that ensures the monotonicity and unique solvability of the numerical solutions, where the scaling parameter ϵ ∈ (0, 1). For a given numerical method, if the initial value u0 is given, no matter how large it is, we prove that h∗ > 0. As long as the actual simulation step 0 ∗, the numerical solution preserves monotonicity and converges to the correct equilibrium state. On the other hand, we prove that the implicit Euler scheme h∗ = h∗(ϵ), which is independent of u0 and only depends on ϵ. Hence regardless of the initial value taken, the simulation can be guaranteed to be correct when h ∗. But for various other numerical methods, no mater how small the step size h is in advance, there will always be initial values that cause simulation errors. The single event effect of a silicon–germanium heterojunction bipolar transistor(SiGe HBT) was thoroughly investigated. By considering the worst bias condition, the sensitive area of the proposed device was scanned with a pulsed *** variation of the collector bias and pulsed laser incident energy, the single event transient of the SiGe HBT was ***, the single event transient produced by laser irradiation at a wavelength of 532 nm was more pronounced than at a wavelength of 1064 nm. Finally, the impact of the equivalent linear energy transfer of the 1064 nm pulsed laser on the single event transient was qualitatively examined by performing technology computer-aided design simulations, and a good consistency between the experimental data and the simulated outcomes was attained.

Glacial-interglacial cycles recorded in clay minerals from the eastern Tibetan Plateau over the last 800 ka and their indications

Clay mineral proxies have been widely used to reconstruct changes in provenance and the ***,high-altitude clay mineral indications and long-term and orbital variations have not been fully ***,we present an800-ka clay-mineral record from a lacustrine sediment core(ZB13-C2)from the Zoige Basin on the eastern Tibetan Plateau(TP).X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to identify the clay mineral assemblages and their micromorphological characteristics of core *** results revealed that the clay minerals in core ZB13-C2 are mainly illite,with small amounts of chlorite,kaolinite,and smectite(including irregular mixed-layers of illite-smectite(I/S)and chloritesmectite(C/S)).The clay mineral assemblages and proxies exhibit three stages of change,which are mainly controlled by the Zoige watershed range under different climate *** watershed was limited to the southeastern region with altitudes ranging from~3500 to~4200 meters above sea level(m a.s.l.),and glacial-interglacial hydraulic erosion controlled the input of bedrock debris during 800-621 ka *** expanded to higher altitudes(~4200 to~4700 m a.s.l.)due to stronger seasonal freezethaw weathering without significant glacial-interglacial variations under a cooling and drying climate during 621-100 ka ***,it expanded to its highest altitudes of~4700 to~5200 m *** of the watershed after 100 ka BP,and hydraulic erosion increased obviously under a warm climate of the interstadial MIS 3 on the *** watershed underwent two major expansions under different climatic conditions at~621 ka and 100 ka BP,with the wet/dry alternation became strong at~621 ka *** results reveal that long-term temperature changes and the wet/dry alternation at high altitudes controlled the watershed range and degree of the physical erosion,and that the indications of clay minerals should be carefully clarified before they are used as climate indicators,especi

The hypervolume-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (HV-MOEAs) have proven to be highly effective in solving multi-objective optimization problems. However, the computation time of the hypervolume calculation increases significantly as the number of objectives increases. To address this issue, an R2-based hypervolume contribution approximation (R2-HVC) method was proposed. Nevertheless, the original R2-HVC generates a large number of vectors and computes the HVC only once. In this study, we propose an ensemble method based on the R2-HVC method. By using a small number of vectors for repetitive computation and majority voting, the ensemble method can reduce the probability of making incorrect choices. Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the approximation accuracy while maintaining a similar computation time to the original R2-HVC method. © 2023 IEEE.

Spectral super-resolution, which reconstructs hyperspectral images (HSI) from a single RGB image, has garnered increasing attention. Due to the limitations of CNN structures in spectral modeling and the high computational cost of Transformer structures, existing deep learning (DL)based methods struggle to balance spectral reconstruction quality and computational efficiency. Recently, Mamba methods base on state-space models (SSM) show great potential in modeling long-range dependencies with linear complexity. Therefore, we introduce the Mamba model into spectral super-resolution (SSR) task. Specifically, we propose a three-stage SSR network base on Mamba, called SSRMamba. We design SpaMamba, SSMamba, and SpeMamba modules for shallow spatial information extraction, mixed information encoding, and spectral information reconstruction, respectively. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that SSRMamba not only surpasses existing methods in terms of quantification and quality, achieving state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance, but also significantly reduces model size and computational cost. In this paper, we examine the effect of normalization in R2-based hypervolume and hypervolume contribution approximation. The fact is that the region with different scales on objective space brings approximation bias. The basic idea of normalization is to perform a coordinate transformation to make the shape of the approximated region more regular, and then transform it to obtain the final value according to the property of hypervolume and hypervolume contribution. The performance of normalization is evaluated on different datasets by comparing it with the original R2-based method. We use two different metrics to evaluate hypervolume and hypervolume contribution separately, and the results indicate that normalization does exactly improve the approximation accuracy and outperforms the original R2-based method. © 2023 IEEE.
