Assessing the effectiveness and mechanisms of Fe/PS, Fe/H_(2)O_(2), and O_(3) treatment for water disinfection: Spotlight on VBNC bacteria

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) exhibit significant potential forwater disinfection dueto their generation of large quantities of highly oxidizing free radicals. However, the neglectof viable but nonculturable (VBNC) cells obscures their true disinfection efficacy and potentialenvironmental health risks. Therefore, the study evaluated the disinfection effectivenessand mechanisms of typical AOPs, including Fe/H_(2)O_(2), Fe/persulfate (PS), and O_(3), fromthe perspective of the production of VBNC bacteria. The results indicate that Fe/PS exhibitsthe strongest bacterial inactivation rate (99.94%), and the cells lose their ability to ***/H_(2)O_(2) and O_(3) induce more cells to enter the VBNC state compared to Fe/PS. Moreover,different AOPs result in varying levels of free radical production and utilization efficiency,with SO(4)^(·−) and O_(3) exhibiting greater selectivity in deactivating bacteria comparedto HO^(·). The inhibition of VBNC bacteria production by Fe/PS treatment may be attributed tothe combined action of HO^(·) and SO(4)^(·−) on microorganisms, leading to oxidative stress andmetabolic disruption in bacteria through the inhibition of biofilm formation and aminoacyltRNAbiosynthesis (p < 0.05), thereby causing direct bacterial death rather than entry intothe VBNC state. In contrast, Fe/H_(2)O_(2) and O_(3) result in the upregulation of the metabolismof alanine, aspartate, and glutamate, as well as styrene degradation capacity by the bacteria,leading to the production of more VBNC bacteria. Overall, the study offers insights intomitigating potential biological risks in water disinfection and developing environmentallyfriendly and efficient disinfection technologies.

Accurate cross sections of neutron induced fission reactions are required in the design of advanced nuclear systems and the development of fission *** projection chambers(TPCs),with their track reconstruction and particle identification capabilities,are considered the best detectors for high-precision fission cross section *** TPC developed by the back-streaming white neutron source(Back-n)team of the China Spallation Neutron Source(CSNS)was used as the fission fragment detector in *** this study,the cross sections of the ^(232)Th(n,f)reaction at five neutron energies in the 4.50−5.40 MeV region were *** fission fragments and α particles were well identified using our TPC,which led to a higher detection efficiency of the fission fragments and smaller uncertainty of the measured cross *** is the first measurement of the ^(232)Th(n,f)reaction using a TPC for the detection of fission *** uncertainties less than 5%,our cross sections are consistent with the data in different evaluation libraries,including JENDL-4.0,ROSFOND-2010,CENDL-3.2,ENDF/B-VⅢ.0,and BROND-3.1,whose uncertainties can be reduced after future improvement of the measurement.

—Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as the potential aerial base stations (BSs) to improve terrestrial communications. However, the limited onboard energy and antenna power of a UAV restrict its communication range and transmission capability. To address these limitations, this work employs collaborative beamforming through a UAV-enabled virtual antenna array to improve transmission performance from the UAV to terrestrial mobile users, under interference from non-associated BSs and dynamic channel conditions. Specifically, we introduce a memory-based random walk model to more accurately depict the mobility patterns of terrestrial mobile users. Following this, we formulate a multi-objective optimization problem (MOP) focused on maximizing the transmission rate while minimizing the flight energy consumption of the UAV swarm. Given the NP-hard nature of the formulated MOP and the highly dynamic environment, we transform this problem into a multi-objective Markov decision process and propose an improved evolutionary multi-objective reinforcement learning algorithm. Specifically, this algorithm introduces an evolutionary learning approach to obtain the approximate Pareto set for the formulated MOP. Moreover, the algorithm incorporates a long short-term memory network and hyper-sphere-based task selection method to discern the movement patterns of terrestrial mobile users and improve the diversity of the obtained Pareto set. simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively generates a diverse range of non-dominated policies and outperforms existing methods. Additional simulations demonstrate the scalability and robustness of the proposed CB-based method under different system parameters and various unexpected circumstances. © 2025 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. Text clustering is a critical step in text data analysis and has been extensively studied by the text mining community. Most existing text clustering algorithms are based on the bag-of-words model, which faces the high-dimensional and sparsity problems and ignores text structural and sequence information. Deep learning-based models such as convolutional neural networks and recurrent neural networks regard texts as sequences but lack supervised signals and explainable results. In this paper, we propose a deep feature-based text clustering (DFTC) framework that incorporates pretrained text encoders into text clustering tasks. This model, which is based on sequence representations, breaks the dependency on supervision. The experimental results show that our model outperforms classic text clustering algorithms on almost all the considered datasets. In addition, the explanation of the clustering results is significant for understanding the principles of the deep learning approach. Our proposed clustering framework includes an explanation module that can help users understand the meaning and quality of the clustering results. Mobile CrowdSensing (MCS) is a data sensing paradigm that recruits users carrying mobile terminals to collect data. As its variant, Sparse MCS has been further proposed for large-scale and fine-grained sensing task with the advantage of collecting only a few data to infer unsensed data. However, in many real-world scenarios, such as early prevention of epidemic, people are interested in not only the data at the current, but also in the future or even long-term future, and the latter may be more important. Long-term prediction not only reduces sensing cost, but also identifies trends or other characteristics of the data. In this paper, we propose a spatiotemporal model based on Transformer to infer and predict the data with sparse sensed data by utilizing spatiotemporal relationships. We design a spatiotemporal feature embedding to embed the prior spatiotemporal information of sensing map into the model to guide model learning. Moreover, we also design a novel multi-head spatiotemporal attention mechanism to dynamically capture spatiotemporal relationships among data. Extensive experiments have been conducted on three types of typical urban sensing tasks, which verify the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms in improving the inference and long-term prediction accuracy with the sparse sensed data. © 2023 IEEE.

Carbon-based solid acids have been successfully employed as acidic catalysts for pollutant mitigation in *** fully tap the potentials of commercially viable carbons for the preparation of solid acids and enhance their catalytic performances is a challenging *** this work,three commercialized carbons including biochar,activated carbon and graphite were preprocessed(ball-milling,Hummer exfoliation,HNO3 soaking,and microwave heating in HNO_(3),etc.),sulfonated,and evaluated as solid-acid catalysts for tylosin ***-originated solid acid performed the best through a balling-milling preprocess,while biochar-originated solid acids behaved well under all preprocessing treatments,in which 40 mg L^(−1) of tylosin was mitigated within 8 min by 1 g L^(−1) of biochar-originated solid *** biochar solid acid through the ball-milling preprocess presented high total acidity and large amounts of-SO_(3)H groups,due to dramatically increased surface area and the rise of activation groups(hydroxyl,alkyl and alkoxy groups,etc.)facilitating electrophilic *** addition,decreased particle size and aromaticity and increased structural defects also *** calculation of average local ionization energy(ALIE)of condensed aromatic model molecules with substituted activation groups confirmed the promoting effects on sulfonation from strong to weak were 8.40-9.06 *** findings have deepened the knowledge in tuning carbon surface chemistry for better sulfonation,thus strengthening catalytic degradation of *** value of this study is in pulling a clear thread for maneuvering solid-acid catalysts using carbons,which holds a novel promise for rationally functionalizing biochar-based catalysts for the remediation of macrolide antibiotics in polluted water.

In various applications of alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) for hydrogen production, the efficiency of AWE stacks is a critical concern. Emerging applications involve significant dynamic operations, necessitating the evaluation of their impact on stack efficiency. However, a quantitative understanding of the power losses within AWE stacks under dynamic conditions remains limited. A significant research challenge exists in the development of models for AWE stacks that can accommodate dynamic operating conditions, and there is a need for a systematic approach to classify and quantify energy losses within the stack. This paper presents a quantitative assessment method for losses in AWE stacks based on a semi-empirical equivalent circuit model (SECM). The losses within the AWE stack are categorized into four types based on their generation mechanisms: overpotential losses, shunt current losses, non-Faradaic losses, and electrochemical cycling losses (cycling losses for short). Using experimental data from 5 MW and 10 kW AWE stacks, the parameters of the SECM observer are identified through a stepwise data-driven approach, resulting in a mean square error of less than 46.4 mV for 5 MW stack and 80.9 mV for 10 kW stack. The constructed SECM observer is employed to simulate the proportion of various losses under different dynamic operating conditions. This paper focuses on the efficiency and loss behaviors of AWE stacks under multi-stack switching strategies. Case studies demonstrate that the current range, ramp rate, regulation period, and duty cycle significantly influence the four types of losses. Based on the SECM observer, recommended parameters for multi-stack switching are provided. This work contributes to accurate assessment of AWE stack efficiency under dynamic operations and provides a methodology for designing AWE stack operating strategies. © 2025 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

Considering the problem that the optimal error dynamics can only converge at the terminal time,an impact angle/time constraint missile guidance law with finite-time convergence is designed in this paper,which is based on the pure proportional navigation(PPN)guidance law and the fast terminal error dynamics(FTED)*** missile guidance model and FTED equation are given first,and the dynamic equation of impact angle/time error based on PPN is also ***,the guidance law is designed based on FTED,and the guidance error can converge to 0 in a finite ***,considering the field of view constraint,the guidance law is improved by using the saturation function mapping ***,a numerical simulation example is given to verify the effectiveness of the guidance law,which shows that the guidance law proposed in this paper can make the missile quickly adjust to the desired states in advance,and effectively relieve the overload saturation pressure of the actuator.
