While El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)modulates landscape fire activities across the Pacific Rim,the detailed patterns and mode-specific variations of these effects remain poorly *** study aims to address that gap by systematically assessing the spatiotemporal variations in burned areas from 2001 to 2020 during different modes of ENSO,namely,Eastern Pacific(EP)El Niño,EP La Niña,Central Pacific(CP)El Niño and CP La Niñ*** evaluate the modulation patterns using classical correlation and cross-spectrum analyses,focusing on five hotspot regions:Temperate North America(TENA),Southern Hemisphere South America(SHSA),Northern Hemisphere South America(NHSA),Equatorial Asia(EQAS)and Australia and New Zealand(AUST).El Niño and La Niña exhibit asymmetrical opposite effects on burned areas,as *** findings reveal spatial non-uniformity in the impact of ENSO on landscape fires,with La Niña enhancing burned areas in TENA and SHSA,whereas El Niño predominantly affects AUST,EQAS and *** and EP ENSO events differ in intensity and their large-scale circulation *** differences cause notable variations in the regional burned *** vapour redistribution emerges as the key *** study emphasises the heterogeneity in ENSO modes in regulating landscape fires,providing insights for future landscape fire risk assessment and prevention efforts under climate change.

HIGH ACCURACY TECHNIQUES BASED ADAPTIVE FINITE ELEMENT METHODS FOR ELLIPTIC PDES

This paper aims to develop an efficient adaptive finite element method for the second-order elliptic problem. Although the theory for adaptive finite element methods based on residual-type a posteriori error estimator and bisection refinement has been well established, in practical computations, the use of non-asymptotic exact of error estimator and the excessive number of adaptive iteration steps often lead to inefficiency of the adaptive algorithm. We propose an efficient adaptive finite element method based on high-accuracy techniques including the superconvergence recovery technique and high-quality mesh optimization. The centroidal Voronoi Delaunay triangulation mesh optimization is embedded in the mesh adaption to provide high-quality mesh, and then assure that the superconvergence property of the recovered gradient and the asymptotical exactness of the error estimator. A tailored adaptive strategy, which could generate high-quality meshes with a target number of vertices, is developed to ensure the adaptive computation process terminated within 7 steps. Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) have achieved remarkable success in tackling complex combinatorial optimization problems. However, EAs often demand carefully-designed operators with the aid of domain expertise to achieve satisfactory performance. In this work, we present the first study on large language models (LLMs) as evolutionary combinatorial optimizers. The main advantage is that it requires minimal domain knowledge and human efforts, as well as no additional training of the model. This approach is referred to as LLM-driven EA (LMEA). Specifically, in each generation of the evolutionary search, LMEA instructs the LLM to select parent solutions from current population, and perform crossover and mutation to generate offspring solutions. Then, LMEA evaluates these new solutions and include them into the population for the next generation. LMEA is equipped with a self-adaptation mechanism that controls the temperature of the LLM. This enables it to balance between exploration and exploitation and prevents the search from getting stuck in local optima. We investigate the power of LMEA on the classical traveling salesman problems (TSPs) widely used in combinatorial optimization research. Notably, the results show that LMEA performs competitively to traditional heuristics in finding high-quality solutions on TSP instances with up to 20 nodes. Additionally, we also study the effectiveness of LLM-driven crossover/mutation and the self- adaptation mechanism in evolutionary search. In summary, our results reveal the great potentials of LLMs as evolutionary optimizers for solving combinatorial problems. We hope our research shall inspire future explorations on LLM-driven EAs for complex optimization challenges. © 2024 IEEE.

A Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer-based Multi-hop Clustering Routing Protocol for RF Energy Harvesting-Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks

Radio frequency energy harvesting (RF EH) and clustering are promising solutions to solve the energy constraint problem faced by cognitive radio sensor networks (CRSNs). However, study on clustering routing protocol design for RF EH-CRSNs is still in the initial stage, and there lacks of solutions for inter-cluster routing problem, which restricts the network scalability. In addition, unbalanced harvested energy and energy consumption may result in premature death of nodes in key position, which will significantly reduce the network performance. In this paper, a simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT)-based multi-hop clustering routing protocol (SMCRP) is proposed for RF EH-CRSNs to well balance the residual energy distribution among nodes and postpone node death. Apart from the RF energy harvested from dedicated or ambi-ent energy sources, the energy obtained through intra-cluster and inter-cluster SWIPT is also considered to facilitate high-quality cluster heads selection, cluster formation and inter-cluster route establishment. Power splitting ratio is derived based on the residual energy of CRSNs nodes and their energy consumption to enable effective implementation of SWIPT in CRSNs. simulation results show that SMCRP is effective in balancing the residual energy distribution among nodes and improving node sustainability. To be specific, compared with current clustering protocols, the network lifetime is extended by 64.07% while intra-cluster energy balance degree and network energy balance degree are improved by 15.1% and 7.82%, respectively. © 2023 ISSN 2414-8105 (Online).

Efficient numerical methods for computing stationary states of spherical Landau-Brazovskii model

In this paper, we develop a set of efficient methods to compute stationary states of the spherical Landau-Brazovskii (LB) model in a discretization-then-optimization way. First, we discretize the spherical LB energy functional into a finite-dimensional energy function by the spherical harmonic expansion. Then five optimization methods are developed to compute stationary states of the discretized energy function, including the accelerated adaptive Bregman proximal gradient, Nesterov, adaptive Nesterov, adaptive nonlinear conjugate gradient and adaptive gradient descent methods. To speed up the convergence, we propose a principal mode analysis (PMA) method to estimate good initial configurations and sphere radius. The PMA method also reveals the relationship between the optimal sphere radius and the dominant degree of spherical harmonics. Numerical experiments show that our approaches significantly reduce the number of iterations and the computational time. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A Simple Graph Contrastive Learning Framework for Short Text Classification

Short text classification has gained significant attention in the information age due to its prevalence and real-world applications. Recent advancements in graph learning combined with contrastive learning have shown promising results in addressing the challenges of semantic sparsity and limited labeled data in short text classification. However, existing models have certain limitations. They rely on explicit data augmentation techniques to generate contrastive views, resulting in semantic corruption and noise. Additionally, these models only focus on learning the intrinsic consistency between the generated views, neglecting valuable discriminative information from other potential views. To address these issues, we propose a Simple graph contrastive learning framework for Short Text Classification (SimSTC). Our approach involves performing graph learning on multiple text-related component graphs to obtain multi-view text embeddings. Subsequently, we directly apply contrastive learning on these embeddings. Notably, our method eliminates the need for data augmentation operations to generate contrastive views while still leveraging the benefits of multi-view contrastive learning. Despite its simplicity, our model achieves outstanding performance, surpassing large language models on various datasets. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Despite the great success of spoken language understanding (SLU) in high-resource languages, it remains challenging in low-resource languages mainly due to the lack of labeled training data. The recent multilingual code-switching approach achieves better alignments of model representations across languages by constructing a mixed-language context in zero-shot cross-lingual SLU. However, current code-switching methods are limited to implicit alignment and disregard the inherent semantic structure in SLU, i.e., the hierarchical inclusion of utterances, slots, and words. In this paper, we propose to model the utterance-slot-word structure by a multi-level contrastive learning framework at the utterance, slot, and word levels to facilitate explicit alignment. Novel code-switching schemes are introduced to generate hard negative examples for our contrastive learning framework. Furthermore, we develop a label-aware joint model leveraging label semantics to enhance the implicit alignment and feed to contrastive learning. Our experimental results show that our proposed methods significantly improve the performance compared with the strong baselines on two zero-shot cross-lingual SLU benchmark datasets. © 2022 Association for computational Linguistics.
