Superhydrophobic ceramic membrane coupled with a biphasic solvent for efficient CO_(2)capture

An innovative strategy was proposed by integration of membrane contactor(MC)with biphasic solvent for efficient CO_(2) capture from flue *** accessible fly ash-based ceramic membrane(CM)underwent hydrophobic modification through silane grafting,followed by fluoroalkylsilane decoration,to prepare the superhydrophobic membrane(CSCM).The CSCM significantly improved resistance to wetting by the biphasic solvent,consisting of amine(DETA)and sulfolane(TMS).Morphological characterizations and chemical analysis revealed the notable enhancements in pore structure and hydrophobic chemical groups for the modified *** of wetting/bubbling behavior based on static wetting theory referred the liquid entry pressure(LEP)of CSCM increased by 20 kPa compared to pristine *** with traditional amine solvents,the biphasic solvent presented the expected phase *** experiments demonstrated that the CO_(2) capture efficiency of the biphasic solvent increased by 7%,and the electrical energy required for desorption decreased by 32%.The 60-h continuous testing and supplemental characterization of used membrane confirmed the excellent adaptability and durability of the *** study provides a potential approach for accessing hydrophobic ceramic membranes and biphasic solvents for industrial CO_(2) capture.

The layer Hall effect describes electrons spontaneously deflected to opposite sides at different layers, which has been experimentally reported in the MnBi2Te4thin films under perpendicular electric fields. Here, we reveal a universal origin of the layer Hall effect in terms of the so-called hidden Berry curvature, as well as material design principles. Hence, it gives rise to zero Berry curvature in momentum space but non-zero layer-locked hidden Berry curvature in real space. We show that, compared to that of a trivial insulator, the layer Hall effect is significantly enhanced in antiferromagnetic topological insulators. Our universal picture provides a paradigm for revealing the hidden physics as a result of the interplay between the global and local symmetries, and can be generalized in various scenarios.

Bipolar junction transistors(BJTs) are often used in spacecraft due to their excellent working characteristics. However,the complex space radiation environment induces primary knock-on atoms(PKAs) in BJTs through collisions, resulting in hard-to-recover displacement damage and affecting the performance of electronic components. In this paper, the properties of PKAs induced by typical space heavy ions(C, N, O, Fe) in BJTs are investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. The simulated results show that the energy spectrum of ion-induced PKAs is primarily concentrated in the low-energy range(17eV–100eV) and displays similar features across all tested ions. The PKAs induced by the collision of energetic ions have large forward scattering angles, mainly around 88°. Moreover, the distribution of PKAs within a transistor as a function of depth displays a peak characteristic, and the peak position is linearly proportional to the incident energy at a certain energy range. These simulation outcomes serve as crucial theoretical support for long-term semiconductor material defect evolution and ground testing of semiconductor devices.

A Surrogate-Assisted Evolutionary Framework for Expensive Multitask Optimization Problems

This paper proposes a surrogate-assisted evolutionary framework (called SELF) to solve expensive multitask optimization problems (ExMTOPs). SELF consists of two main phases: global knowledge transfer phase and local knowledge transfer phase. In the former, a multitask Gaussian process model (MTGP) is established by fusing previously evaluated solutions of multiple optimization tasks. MTGP can capture task-relevant information and the knowledge of landscapes. Then, differential evolution assisted with MTGP is proposed to preselect high-quality candidates. During the preselection, the knowledge of landscapes is transferred among multiple optimization tasks for locating promising regions quickly. In the latter, for each optimization task, Bayesian optimization is adopted to improve the quality of the best individual in the population. Moreover, the improved best individuals in the populations of multiple optimization tasks are adaptively transferred based on a transfer probability, which is computed through the task-relevant information provided by MTGP. By combining these two phases, SELF not only achieves the tradeoff between exploration and exploitation, but also utilizes the global and local knowledge transfer to improve the efficiency for solving ExMTOPs. We test SELF on seven benchmark test problems in the IEEE CEC2017 evolutionary multitask optimization competition. The results demonstrate that the performance of SELF is better than that of other seven advanced methods. In addition, we also apply SELF to deal with two real-world ExMTOPs. The designs provided by SELF exhibit the best performance among all the compared methods, verifying the potential of SELF in practical engineering applications. IEEE

Recently, evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO) algorithms have been used in various application fields. Whereas many new EMO algorithms are proposed every year, well-known EMO algorithms such as NSGA-II, MOEA/D, SMS-EMOA and NSGA-III have been still frequently used in application papers as shown by their number of citations. Since most EMO algorithms have been designed for and evaluated by artificial test problems such as DTLZ and WFG, they do not always work well on real-world problems. Main difficulties of real-world problems are as follows: (i) their Pareto front shapes are irregular, (ii) some objectives have much larger values than others, (iii) some decision variables have much larger values than others, (iv) some objectives are highly correlated, and (v) solution evaluation is expensive. In this paper, we focus on the first four difficulties (except for expensive solution evaluation). Our goal is to clearly explain problematic search behaviors of NSGA-II, MOEA/D, SMS-EMOA and NSGA-III caused by these difficulties using simple distance minimization problems. We formulate various distance minimization problems with the above-mentioned four difficulties by changing the location of each target point on the map as well as the size and shape of the map. We also suggest simple remedies for performance improvement of each algorithm for real-world applications without changing the algorithm itself. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

To handle constrained multi-objective optimization problems (CMOPs), many constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (CMOEAs) have been proposed. However, a recent study has shown that many of these CMOEAs do not perform well on real-world CMOPs. In contrast, NSGA-II, proposed over 20 years ago with a simple constrained dominance principle, has demonstrated better performance than recent CMOEAs on many real-world CMOPs. Motivated by NSGA-II’s promising results, this paper aims to further enhance its performance. We explore the idea of enhancing NSGA-II with a knee point for solving CMOPs. Specifically, a knee point is identified using the minimum distance from the estimated ideal point, and always included in the next population of NSGA-II. Experimental results show that this simple idea improves the performance of NSGA-II on real-world CMOPs. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

A corrosion-resistant and age-hardenable Mg-Al-Mn-Ca-Ce dilute alloy with fine-grained structure processed by controlled rolling

Low strength and poor corrosion resistance are two long-standing bottlenecks with dilute Mg ***,we report that the corrosion resistance of Mg-0.6Al-0.5Mn-0.2Ca(wt.%)alloy sheet can be significantly improved by micro-alloying with 0.3 wt.%Ce,and the strength can be considerably augmented after aging *** optimization of strength,ductility,and corrosion resistance is difficult due to the inherent trade-off in Mg ***,our aged Mg-0.6Al-0.5Mn-0.2Ca-0.3Ce alloy features with yield strength(YS)of∼194 MPa,ultimate tensile strength(UTS)of∼265 MPa,elongation to failure(EF)of∼17.2%,and corrosion rate(CR)of 2.2 mm y^(−1),the combination of which exhibits competitive advantage over other comparative dilute Mg *** is found that Ce addition decreases the activity of cathodic phases,inhibits detrimental effects of Fe impurities,and forms a protective Ce-containing surface *** high strength stems from the precipitation of ordered Guinier-Preston(G.P.)zones dispersed in uniform fine grains with an average grain size of∼8.2μ*** atomic-scale *** result in a noticeable age hardening response but do not act as crack initiation and propagation site,so our alloy also performs satisfactory *** work sheds light on the design and fabrication of strong,ductile,and corrosion-resistant dilute magnesium alloys to be used in electronic products and automotive bodies.

Spring pair method of finding saddle points using the minimum energy path as a compass

Finding index-1 saddle points is crucial for understanding phase transitions. In this work, we propose a simple yet efficient approach, the spring pair method (SPM), to accurately locate saddle points. Without requiring the Hessian information, the SPM evolves a single pair of spring-coupled particles on an energy surface. By designing complementary drifting and climbing dynamics based on gradient decomposition, the spring pair converges onto the minimum energy path (MEP) and spontaneously aligns its orientation with the MEP tangent, providing a reliable ascent direction for efficient convergence to saddle points. The SPM fundamentally differs from traditional surface walking methods that rely on the eigenvectors of the Hessian, which may deviate from the MEP tangent and potentially lead to convergence failure or undesired saddle points. The efficiency of the SPM for finding saddle points is verified by ample examples, including Lennard-Jones clusters, Morse clusters, water clusters, and the Landau energy functional involving quasicrystal phase transitions.

Fast solution to the free return orbit's reachable domain of the manned lunar mission by deep neural network

It is important to calculate the reachable domain(RD)of the manned lunar mission to evaluate whether a lunar landing site could be reached by the spacecraft. In this paper, the RD of free return orbits is quickly evaluated and calculated via the classification and regression neural networks. An efficient databasegeneration method is developed for obtaining eight types of free return orbits and then the RD is defined by the orbit’s inclination and right ascension of ascending node(RAAN) at the perilune. A classify neural network and a regression network are trained respectively. The former is built for classifying the type of the RD, and the latter is built for calculating the inclination and RAAN of the RD. The simulation results show that two neural networks are well trained. The classification model has an accuracy of more than 99% and the mean square error of the regression model is less than 0.01°on the test set. Moreover, a serial strategy is proposed to combine the two surrogate models and a recognition tool is built to evaluate whether a lunar site could be reached. The proposed deep learning method shows the superiority in computation efficiency compared with the traditional double two-body model.
