Effects of exogenous acylated homoserine lactones on biofilms in biofilters for gaseous toluene treatment

Biofilters are typical biofilm reactors, and they usually have poor biofilm formation resulting in limited reactor performance. Exogenous acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs) can enhance biofilm formation in many bioreactors based on quorum sensing regulation. However, their effect on biofilm in biofilters utilized for volatile organic compound (VOC) removal is unknown and needs to be investigated. In this study, the effects of the exogenous AHLs on biofilters for gaseous toluene removal were investigated. Analysis of biofilms in biofilters showed that the addition of exogenous AHLs considerably enhanced biofilm growth;the average biofilm concentration increased by 18%. Furthermore, the average biofilm coverage proportions in biofilters with and without exogenous AHLs were 17 % and 13 %, respectively, demonstrating the positive effect of exogenous AHLs on biofilm coverage. In particular, exogenous AHLs promoted the production of extracellular polymeric substances and the microbial adhesive strength of the biofilm. In addition, the exogenous AHLs showed no significant effect on the gaseous toluene removal efficiency of the biofilter. These results show that exogenous AHLs can enhance biofilm formation and can guide the application of exogenous AHLs in VOC biofilters.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS)has been used in atmospheric aerosol detection as it enables the high-resolution analysis of particulate ***,its use in the detection of historical samples without damaging the sampling membrane while achieving effective transfer and the high-sensitivity analysis of particulate matter from sample films remains *** this study,a new type of SERS tape was developed,consisting of Au nanoparticles(NPs)on an adhesive double-sided Cu film(DCu).The enhanced electromagnetic field generated by the coupled resonance of the local surface plasmon resonances of AuNPs and DCu led to an enhanced SERS signal with an experimental enhancement factor of 10^(7).The AuNPs were semi-embedded and distributed on the substrate,and the viscous DCu layer was exposed,enabling particle *** substrates exhibited good uniformity and favorable reproducibility with relative standard deviations of 13.53%and 9.74%respectively,and the substrates could be stored for 180 days with no signs of signal *** application of the substrates was demonstrated by the extraction and detection of malachite green and ammonium salt particulate *** results demonstrated that SERS substrates based on AuNPs and DCu are highly promising in real–world environmental particle monitoring and detection.

The interaction between fluid and sediment particles is widely involved in hydraulic engineering problems. In the current study, an explicit incompressible mesh-free method in the framework of the Moving Particle Semi-implicit(MPS) method is proposed to simulate the interaction between the two phases in submerged conditions. The proposed method solves two sets of the continuity and momentum equations, respectively, for the fluid phase and the sediment phase according to the mixture theory. In the method, the pressure and velocity fields are explicitly calculated for the sediment phase with the solid concentration obtained from the mixture theory, in which a rheology model is used to account for the viscosity and shear stress. The governing equations for the fluid are solved using the predictor-corrector time-splitting scheme and the resulting Poisson equation for pressure is calculated using an explicit scheme. In each loop, the discretized points move according to the velocity of the fluid in the mesh-free Lagrangian approach. The proposed method is used to simulate the submerged granular flows including submerged granular column collapse, submerged granular sliding on slopes, and erodible dambreak flow. In the simulations, the parameters of particle distance and collision distance in the numerical method are investigated. It is found that the flow characteristics in the granular flows are reflected by the proposed method and the simulated free surface and water-sediment interface profiles are in good agreement with experimental observations.

Particle Swarm Optimization with Migration (MPSO) is proposed to solve the issue that PSO will encounter unbearable time cost problems when dealing with High-dimension, Expensive and Black-box objective function tasks. The Migration operator is inspired by the migration of Salmon. Salmon will start a dangerous journey from the ocean to the home rivers for reproduction. The process of the entire behavior is similar to the reduction and recovery of dimension. Therefore, we design the Migration operator where a pretrained Wasserstein Autoencoders (WAE) is applied to simulate the migration behavior to accelerate the process of evolution in PSO, and we use Least-Squares Regression in lower space to produce better generation. In comparison with famous baseline methods in some benchmark functions, MPSO converges faster and more accurately, which shows the great potential of migration operations. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper,the piecewise spectral-collocation method is used to solve the second-order Volterra integral differential equation with nonvanishing *** this collocation method,the main discontinuity point of the solution of the equation is used to divide the partitions to overcome the disturbance of the numerical error convergence caused by the main discontinuity of the solution of the *** approximation in the sense of integral is constructed in numerical format,and the convergence of the spectral collocation method in the sense of the L¥and L2 norm is proved by the Dirichlet *** the same time,the error convergence also meets the effect of spectral accuracy *** numerical experimental results are given at the end also verify the correctness of the theoretically proven results.

Numerical Investigations on the Transient Behavior of Sand Waves in Beibu Gulf Under Normal and Extreme Sea Conditions

In this study, a morphodynamic numerical model is established with the Regional Ocean Modeling System(ROMS)to investigate the transient behavior of sand waves under realistic sea conditions. The simulation of sand wave evolution comprises two steps: 1) a regional-scale model is configured first to simulate the ocean hydrodynamics, i.e., tides and tidal currents, and 2) the transient behavior of sand waves is simulated in a small computational domain under the time-variant currents extracted from the large model. The evolution of sand waves on the continental shelf in the Beibu Gulf is specifically investigated. The numerical results of the two-year evolution of sand waves under normal sea conditions compare well with the field survey data. The transient behavior of sand waves in individual months shows that the sand waves are more stable in April and October than that in other months, which can be selected as the windows for seabed operations. The effects of sediment properties, including settling velocity, critical shear stress and surface erosion rate, on sand wave evolution are also analyzed. Then, the typhoon-induced currents are further superimposed on the tidal currents as the extreme weather conditions. Sand waves with the average wavelength generally have more active behavior than smaller or larger sand waves. The characteristics of the evolution of sand waves in an individual typhoon process are quite different for different hydrodynamic combinations. For the storm conditions, i.e., the real combination and maximum combination cases, the sand waves experience a significant migration together with a damping in height due to the dominant suspended sediment transport. For the mild conditions, i.e., the pure tidal current and minimum combination cases, the sand waves migrate less, but the heights continue growing due to the dominant bedload transport.
