Because the eighteen online university digital museums of China confront a problem that the multi-discipline resources at these digital museums are isolated and dispersed without sufficient interconnection, ChinaGrid (China Education & Research Grid) supports a project named UDMGrid (University Digital Museum Grid), which studies a grid application for University Digital Museums using grid technology, especially information grid technology. According to the analysis on the problem, UDMGrid focuses on the resource sharing, information management and information service about those university digital museums. This paper presents research work on UDMGrid’s framework, metadata, replica management, application server, etc. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper presents the Intelligent Meeting Room, anongoing project dedicated to the development of anaugmented meeting room. which facilitates participantswith mobile device to argue or discuss their ideas. Forpresenter, the interaction becomes friendlier and moreefficient by personalizing shared devices-projector. Thecontext-aware note program, ConNote, can automaticallyadd the contextual information into note so that it lessensthe audience's burden of taking note. By making full usecontextual information, ConQuiz can help presenter toefficiently answer audience's question. ConLog modulecan create live meeting record. The underlying softwareinfrastructure is a multi agent system called SmartPlatform.

Hints for storage system come from three aspects: the first is in combination with accurate file or directory attribute layout. The second is from existing file system and depends on user input. The third is from file content analysis. However in the SOSS (smart object-based storage system), object, a new fundamental storage component different from traditional storage unit (file or block), is introduced, and object provides ample hints for storage system, which can help with designing more intelligent (or smarter) storage system. This paper gives a brief introduction about SOSS, and some methods adopted in SOSS to achieve intelligence, such as pattern recognition method, predicting object properties method and an adaptive cache replacement policy (all are based on object attribute), are studied.

A scalable object-based intelligent storage device (SOID) is presented in this paper. A scalable way of describing the object attributes of SOID is discussed and is adaptive to many application fields. In the SOID system, the users can register and upload methods at the device and associate an object with a chain of methods. Any kind of operations on objects can be performed by the method chains which are executed by taking the object as an input stream in a SOID. The SOID has also explored two promising enhancements: object-based interface and embedded computational capabilities. It improves the scalability of storage system.

In this paper, mechanisms in human learning are incorporated into the reinforcement learning to improve the learning efficiency. A new learning method is presented based on the spatial and temporal association of states, which is inspired by the analogy and recall in human learning. The fuzzy state is proposed to represent the spatial association of states in the state space. The delayed optimization of the control process is proposed for learning with temporally correlated states. In the experiment, the proposed method is applied to a maze problem, which shows that the proposed method has improved learning performance.

This paper analyses the mathematical properties of four famous wavelets and evaluates their coding performance for different kinds of images in EZW image coders. It can be found that although the 9/7 biorthogonal wavelets, which obtain better tradeoff among incompatible mathematical properties, give the best performance. But it still can't code edges and textures efficiently due to existing ringing and smearing artifacts at low bit rates. The harmonic decomposition must follow the uncertainty principle that prevents any atom perfectly, which is well localized in the space domain to retain frequency localization. It gives an opportunity to develop new paradigms to efficiently representing and coding structures very well localized in the space domain, but with large frequency band such as edges and textures.

In order to classify packet, a novel IP classification is proposed based the non-collision hash and jumping table trie-tree (NHJTTT) algorithm, which is based on non-collision hash trie-tree algorithm and grid of tries algorithm. The core of algorithm has three parts: one is the structure of hash function, which is constructed mainly based on destination/source port and protocol type field so that the hash function can avoid space explosion problem; two is that we transform grid of tries for the true trie-tree and jumping table in order to reduce space complexity; lastly we introduce the source port number (or source port range) bitmap chunk algorithm. After expanding normally, it doesn't increase the time complex of algorithm because we introduce the jumping table. Space complexity consumed and space requirement of this algorithm are less than those of non-collision hash and grid of tries. The test results show that the classification rate of NHJTTT algorithm is up to 1 million packets per second and the maximum memory consumed is 8 MB for 10,000 rules.

In most of the modern information retrieval (IR) systems, such as Okapi system, there are a variety of parameters to be turned which are data-dependent and sensitive. Manual parameter setting with fixed experimental values is not always feasible and reliable in practical cases. Furthermore, the supervised learning approaches are not applicable for lacking of relevant information while retrieving. Therefore, an automatic unsupervised parameter learning mechanism is necessary and important. In this paper, a genetic algorithm (GA) based parameter optimization approach is proposed and experimented on Okapi system using large scale data sets of TREC11, TREC10 and TREC9 web track collections. It indicates that our algorithm is effective to adjust system parameters and improve the retrieval performance significantly.

In this paper, we propose a framework for wireless/mobile pervasive computing to augment capabilities and to save scanty resources of mobile host by making full use of available resources in the surrounding. Firstly, a mobile device finds and utilizes the cheap computer as a surrogate to forward the service requests. Secondly, after the surrogate discovers the services, it will filter, synthesize or handoff them according to the context information. We also take consideration of robustness, scalability, and load balancing by utilizing multi surrogates. Service descriptions are encoded by the extensible markup language (XML) technology to provide flexibility. The analytical results on the performance of our framework show that it has significant advantages in terms of reducing wireless bandwidth consumption, ant etc.

In the ubiquitous computing environment (UCE), how to seamlessly provision the service or application to its occupant or its mobile user is an interesting research topic. This paper introduces our two UCEs called smart classroom (SCR) and intelligent meeting room (IMR) respectively. When a teacher gives his lesson in the SCR, different services will automatically be provisioned to him according to captured context information. When the users with various kinds of portable devices, such as PDA, mobile phone or laptop, attend a meeting in IMR, they can easily organize a meeting and unobtrusively access the services provided by IMR, for example, they could give presentation by "projector service". The paper also describes the software infrastructure of SCR and IMR - smart platform, a multi agents (MAs) system.
