An accurate and operational bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BDRF) canopy model is the basis of quantitative vegetation remote sensing. The canopy reflectance should be approximated as the sum of the single scattering reflectance arising from the sun, pl, and the multiple scattering reflectance arising from the canopy, fin, as their directional characteristics are dramatically different. Based on the existing BRDF model, we obtain a new analytical expression of ρ1 and ρm in this paper, which is suitable for different illumination conditions and different vegetation canopies. According to the geometrical optic model at the leaf scale, the anisotropy of ρ1 can be ascribed to the geometry of the object, sun and the sensor, multiple scale clumping, and the fraction of direct solar radiation and diffuse sky radiation. Then, we parameterize the area ratios of four components: the sunlit foliage, sunlit ground, shadow foliage and shadow ground based on a Poisson distribution, and develop a new approximate analytical single scattering reflectance model. Assuming G=0.5, a recollision probability theory based scattering model is developed which considers the effects of diffuse sky radiation, scattering inside the canopy and rebounds between the canopy and soil. Validation using ground measurements of maize and black spruce forest proves the reliability of the model.

Studies on accident severity on mountainous freeways have predominantly centered on the personal injury level, rather than the aggregation level. However, for quantifying the accident causality, clustering the accident severity from multidimensional perspectives based on data-driven approach is seldom investigated in existing studies. To address this research gap, we propose a two-stage methodology that integrates accident clustering with Bayesian inference. Initially, a Gaussian mixture clustering algorithm is developed to categorize accident severity. Subsequently, a Bayesian network is constructed to explore the risk factors associated with accident severity. The proposed model is calibrated and validated using accident data collected from mountainous freeways in Yunnan Province, China, spanning the period from 2016 to 2021. The findings suggest that our proposed accident clustering method exhibits superior robustness compared to alternative clustering techniques. Bayesian inference analysis further elucidates that accident severity is significantly influenced by factors such as driving behavior, weather conditions, and road surface conditions.

As a part of developing an adaptive signal control system using VS-PLUS method for optimal network traffic control, a study was carried out along the Huangshan Road in Hefei, China, to evaluate this system. This paper described the study which included field survey about traffic performance; development of trip matrix using an improved Furness method; using the TRANSYT traffic modelling software to find the optimal fixed-time signal plan and VISSIM micro-simulation software to affirm and evaluate the TRANSYT model and to help assess the optimal signal plan; building adaptive frame signal plan and refining and evaluating the plan using VISSIM with VS-PLUS emulator. The results indicated that average delay per vehicle was reduced significantly with consequent improvement in network performance. Adaptive signal control plan was then designed for the VS-PLUS signal control system based on the optimal fixed-time signal plan. Through micro-simulation, it was shown that delay in the adaptive signal control was shortened noticeably than that in the fixed time control. This study has been the very first for this system. Further and more comprehensive studies are expected to follow to fully evaluate and appreciate this system. This study has filled some of the gaps in evaluating the performance of and provided a benchmark for such an adaptive traffic signal control system in a typical urban setting in cities in China. The study has also raised a number of questions in setting the optimal frame plan regarding driver behaviour, safety concerns and tradeoffs between shorter cycles and higher responsiveness to traffic variations.
