Privacy and Security in Ubiquitous Integrated Sensing and Communication: Threats, Challenges and Future Directions

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technology is at the forefront of next-generation communication, enhancing applications from intelligent transportation to unmanned aerial vehicle surveillance and healthcare through ubiquitous sensing capability. However, the advent of ISAC brings with it a dual-edged challenge. While it opens up new avenues for application, it also raises significant concerns regarding the privacy of sensitive data and the security of systems in an inherently open environment. To navigate these challenges and unlock ISAC’s full potential, this article starts with an analysis of the underlying factors that contribute to privacy and security vulnerabilities. It also identifies the technical obstacles that stand in the way of achieving a secure and private ISAC ecosystem within the confines of conventional network frameworks. As a solution, we introduce a security and privacy-preserving network (SPPN), designed to mitigate these potential threats and tackle the technical challenges through a secure framework for information handling and collaborative efforts among trusted parties, ISAC operators, and users. Central to SPPN’s security strategies is an artificial intelligence based system, equipped to detect unauthorized access and coordinate defense mechanisms, including deploying friendly jammers to thwart malicious devices and utilizing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to bolster the network’s defense mechanisms against potential attacks. Through detailed analysis and case studies, this paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the SPPN framework, which not only strengthens the network’s defenses but also significantly improves its sensing and communication capabilities. In an era of frequent extreme weather and global warming, obtaining precise, fine-grained near-surface weather forecasts is increasingly essential for human activities. Downscaling (DS), a crucial task in meteorological forecasting, enables the reconstruction of high-resolution meteorological states for target regions from global-scale forecast results. Previous downscaling methods, inspired by CNN and Transformer-based super-resolution models, lacked tailored designs for meteorology and encountered structural limitations. Notably, they failed to efficiently integrate topography, a crucial prior in the downscaling process. In this paper, we address these limitations by pioneering the selective state space model into the meteorological field downscaling and propose a novel model called MambaDS. This model enhances the utilization of multivariable correlations and topography information, unique challenges in the downscaling process while retaining the advantages of Mamba in long-range dependency modeling and linear computational complexity. Through extensive experiments in both China mainland and the continental United States (CONUS), we validated that our proposed MambaDS achieves state-of-the-art results in three different types of meteorological field downscaling settings. Semantic change detection is an important task in geoscience and earth observation. By producing a semantic change map for each temporal phase, both the land use land cover categories and change information can be interpreted. Recently some multi-task learning based semantic change detection methods have been proposed to decompose the task into semantic segmentation and binary change detection subtasks. However, previous works comprise triple branches in an entangled manner, which may not be optimal and hard to adopt foundation models. Besides, lacking explicit refinement of bitemporal features during fusion may cause low accuracy. In this letter, we propose a novel late-stage bitemporal feature fusion network to address the issue. Specifically, we propose local global attentional aggregation module to strengthen feature fusion, and propose local global context enhancement module to highlight pivotal semantics. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on two public datasets, including SECOND and Landsat-SCD. Quantitative and qualitative results show that our proposed model achieves new state-of-the-art performance on both datasets. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper studies kernel PCA in a decentralized setting, where data are distributively observed with full features in local nodes and a fusion center is prohibited. Compared with linear PCA, the use of kernel brings challenges to the design of decentralized consensus optimization: the local projection directions are data-dependent. As a result, the consensus constraint in distributed linear PCA is no longer valid. To overcome this problem, we propose a projection consensus constraint and obtain an effective decentralized consensus framework, where local solutions are expected to be the projection of the global solution on the column space of local dataset. We also derive a fully non-parametric, fast and convergent algorithm based on alternative direction method of multiplier, of which each iteration is analytic and communication-efficient. Experiments on a truly parallel architecture are conducted on real-world data, showing that the proposed decentralized algorithm is effective to utilize information of other nodes and takes great advantages in running time over the central kernel PCA. Constrained multiobjective optimization problems (CMOPs) are prevalent in various real-world applications, presenting a formidable challenge to existing evolutionary algorithms when faced with intricate constraints. When solving CMOPs, a crucial concern is achieving a balance between convergence, diversity, and feasibility. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a two-archive-based constrained multiobjective competitive swarm optimizer. The algorithm preserves two collaborative and complementary archives to improve population convergence and feasibility. By implementing a competitive particle swarm mechanism, offspring solutions are generated by drawing upon solutions from both archives, thus capitalizing on their synergistic effect and exceptional information. An adaptive parameter is also used to adjust the bias in choosing the winner in the paired competition during the evolution. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in handling constrained multiobjective optimization problems.

The manufacturing sector is envisioned to be heavily influenced by artificial-intelligence-based technologies with the extraordinary increases in computational power and data volumes. A central challenge in the manufacturing sector lies in the requirement of a general framework to ensure satisfied diagnosis and monitoring performances in different manufacturing applications. Here, we propose a general data-driven,end-to-end framework for the monitoring of manufacturing systems. This framework, derived from deep-learning techniques, evaluates fused sensory measurements to detect and even predict faults and wearing conditions. This work exploits the predictive power of deep learning to automatically extract hidden degradation features from noisy, time-course data. We have experimented the proposed framework on 10 representative data sets drawn from a wide variety of manufacturing applications. Results reveal that the framework performs well in examined benchmark applications and can be applied in diverse contexts,indicating its potential use as a critical cornerstone in smart manufacturing.

The high-speed train inspection robot needs to perform alignment parking and image acquisition at the position of the train bogie, and reliable alignment identification marks are the basis for the inspection robot to achieve highprecision alignment parking. The existing alignment method is mainly based on the way of artificial beacons, in the inspection workshop through manual laying of additional identification marks such as QR codes, magnetic stripes, RFID electronic tags, auxiliary robot alignment parking, but this type of method in beacon maintenance, laying costs and other aspects have certain limitations. Aiming at the problem, this paper proposes a vision-based bogie beacon detection method, which combines the target detection technology with the unique bogie spatial structure feature of the train, and provides reliable identification marks for the alignment and parking of the inspection robot. This method improves the alignment accuracy, reduces the cost of laying and maintaining artificial beacons, and has high application value. © 2022 IEEE.

Human motion prediction aims to predict future 3D skeletal sequences by giving a limited human motion as inputs. Two popular methods, recurrent neural networks and feed-forward deep networks, are able to predict rough motion trend, but motion details such as limb movement may be lost. To predict more accurate future human motion, we propose an Adversarial Refinement Network (ARNet) following a simple yet effective coarse-to-fine mechanism with novel adversarial error augmentation. Specifically, we take both the historical motion sequences and coarse prediction as input of our cascaded refinement network to predict refined human motion and strengthen the refinement network with adversarial error augmentation. During training, we deliberately introduce the error distribution by learning through the adversarial mechanism among different subjects. In testing, our cascaded refinement network alleviates the prediction error from the coarse predictor resulting in a finer prediction robustly. This adversarial error augmentation provides rich error cases as input to our refinement network, leading to better generalization performance on the testing dataset. We conduct extensive experiments on three standard benchmark datasets and show that our proposed ARNet outperforms other state-of-the-art methods, especially on challenging aperiodic actions in both short-term and long-term predictions. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The traditional kinematic calibration method for manipulators requires precise three-dimensional measuring instruments to measure the end pose, which is not only expensive due to the high cost of the measuring instruments but also not applicable to all manipulators. Another calibration method uses a camera, but the system error caused by the camera's parameters affects the calibration accuracy of the kinematics of the robot arm. In order to solve this problem, this paper reduces the dimensionality of the experimental data and redesigns the objective function to be optimized. That is, the three-dimensional positions of the feature points of the calibration plate under each manipulator attitude corresponding to the actual kinematic model and the classic D-H kinematic model are mapped into the pixel coordinate system, and the sum of Euclidean distance errors of the pixel coordinates of the two is used as the objective function to be optimized. And then, nonlinear optimization and parameter compensation are performed. The experimental results show that the pixel deviation of the end pose corresponding to the optimized D-H kinematic model proposed in this paper and the end pose corresponding to the actual kinematic model in the pixel coordinate system is 0.99 pixels. Compared with the 7.9 deviation pixels between the pixel coordinates calculated by the classic D-H kinematic model and the actual pixel coordinates, the deviation is reduced by nearly 7 pixels for an 87% reduction in error. Therefore, the proposed method can effectively avoid system errors caused by camera parameters in visual calibration, can improve the absolute positioning accuracy of the end of the robotic arm, and has good economy and universality. © 2022 IEEE.
