Carbon emission right allowance is a double-edged sword, one edge is to reduce emission as its original design intention, another edge has in practice slain many less developed coal-consuming enterprises, especially for those in thermal power industry. Partially governed on the hilt in hands of the authority, body of this sword is the prices of carbon emission right. How should the thermal power plants dance on the blade motivates this research. Considering the impact of price fluctuations of carbon emission right allowance, we investigate the operation of Chinese thermal power plant by modeling the decision-making with optimal stopping problem, which is established on the stochastic environment with carbon emission allowance price process simulated by geometric Brownian motion. Under the overall goal of maximizing the ultimate profitability, the optimal stopping indicates the timing of suspend or halt of production, hence the optimal stopping boundary curve implies the edge of life and death with regard to this enterprise. Applying this methodology, real cases of failure and survival of several Chinese representative thermal power plants were analyzed to explore the industry ecotope, which leads to the findings that: 1) The survival environment of existed thermal power plants becomes severer when facing more pressure from the newborn carbon-finance market. 2) Boundaries of survival environment is mainly drawn by the technical improvements for rising the utilization rate of carbon emission. Based on the same optimal stopping model, outlook of this industry is drawn with a demarcation surface defining the vivosphere of thermal power plants with different levels of profitability. This finding provides benchmarks for those enterprises struggling for survival and policy makers scheming better supervision and necessary intervene. © 2021, CC BY-NC-SA.

Study of Bs→K(*)ℓ+ℓ− decays in the PQCD factorization approach with lattice QCD input

In this paper, we studied systematically the semileptonic decays B¯s→K(*)ℓ+ℓ− with l−=(e−,μ−,τ−) by using the perturbative QCD (PQCD) and the “PQCD+Lattice” factorization approach, respectively. We first evaluated all relevant form factors Fi(q2) in the low-q2 region using the PQCD approach, and we also took the available lattice QCD results at the end point qmax2 as additional inputs to improve the extrapolation of the form factors to the high-q2 region. We calculated the branching ratios and twelve other kinds of physical observables. From our studies, we find the following points: (a) for B¯s→Kl+l− decays, the PQCD and PQCD+Lattice predictions for branching ratios B(B¯s→Kl+l−), the ratios of the branching ratios RKeμ and RKμτ, and the longitudinal polarization asymmetry of the leptons PL agree well within errors; (b) the PQCD and PQCD+Lattice predictions for the CP-averaged branching ratio B(B¯s→K*μ+μ−) are (3.17−0.78+0.95)×10−8 and (2.48−0.50+0.56)×10−8 respectively, which agree well with the LHCb measured value (2.9±1.1)×10−8 and the light-cone sum rule prediction; (c) for the ratios RK*eμ and RK*μτ, the PQCD and PQCD+Lattice predictions agree well with each other and have a small error less than 10%; (d) for the direct CP asymmetries ACP of all considered decay modes, they are always very small as expected: less than 5% in magnitude; (e) for the angular observables P1,2,3 and P4,5,6,8′, our theoretical predictions for each kind of lepton are consistent within errors; (f) the theoretical predictions of the angular observables P3 and P6′ are less than 10−2 in size, but the magnitude of P1,2 and P4,5′ are larger than 0.2; and (g) the PQCD and PQCD+Lattice predictions of the binned values of all considered observables in the two q2 bins [0.1–0.98] GeV2 and [1.1–6] GeV2 generally agree with each other and are also consistent with the light-cone sum rule results within errors. We believe that above predictions could be tested by future LHCb and Belle-II experiment

Arbitrarily high-order structure-preserving schemes for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with angular momentum rotation in three dimensions

In this paper, we design a novel class of arbitrarily high-order structure-preserving numerical schemes for the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation with angular momentum rotation in three dimensions. Based on the idea of the scalar auxiliary variable approach which is proposed in the recent papers [J. Comput. Phys., 416 (2018) 353-407 and SIAM Rev., 61(2019) 474-506] for developing energy stable schemes for gradient flow systems, we firstly reformulate the Gross-Pitaevskii equation into an equivalent system with a modified energy conservation law. The reformulated system is then discretized by the Gauss collocation method in time and the standard Fourier pseudo-spectral method in space, respectively. We show that the proposed schemes can preserve the discrete mass and modified energy exactly. Numerical results are addressed to verify the efficiency and high-order accuracy of the proposed schemes. DRAM is a significant source of server power consumption especially when the server runs memory intensive applications. Current power aware scheduling assumes that DRAM is as energy proportional as other components. However, the non-energy proportionality of DRAM significantly affects the power and energy consumption of the whole server system when running memory intensive applications. Thus good knowledge of server power characterization under memory intensive workloads can help better workload placement with power reduction. In this paper, we investigate the power characteristics of memory intensive applications on real rack servers of different generations. Through comprehensive analysis we find that (1) Server power consumption changes with workload intensity and concurrent execution threads. However, fully utilized memory systems are not the most energy efficient. (2) Powered memory modules of installed memory capacity, i.e. the memory capacity per processor core has significant impact on the application’s performance and server power consumption even if the memory system is not fully utilized. (3) Memory utilization is not always a good indicator for server power consumption when it is running memory intensive applications. Our experiments show that hardware configuration, workload types, as well as concurrently running threads have significant impact on a server’s energy efficiency when running memory intensive applications. Our findings presented in this paper provide useful insights and guidance to system designers, as well as data center operators for energy efficiency aware job scheduling and power reductions. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ActivityNet-QA: A dataset for understanding complex web videos via question answering

Recent developments in modeling language and vision have been successfully applied to image question answering. It is both crucial and natural to extend this research direction to the video domain for video question answering (VideoQA). Compared to the image domain where large scale and fully annotated benchmark datasets exists, VideoQA datasets are limited to small scale and are automatically generated, etc. These limitations restrict their applicability in practice. Here we introduce ActivityNet-QA, a fully annotated and large scale VideoQA dataset. The dataset consists of 58,000 QA pairs on 5,800 complex web videos derived from the popular ActivityNet dataset. We present a statistical analysis of our ActivityNet-QA dataset and conduct extensive experiments on it by comparing existing VideoQA baselines. Moreover, we explore various video representation strategies to improve VideoQA performance, especially for long videos. The dataset is available at https://***/MILVLG/ activitynet-qa. Currently, many cloud providers deploy their big data processing systems as cloud services, which helps users conveniently manage and process their data in clouds. Among different service providers’ big data processing services, how to evaluate and compare their scalability is an interesting and challenging work. Most traditional benchmark tools focus on performance evaluation of big data processing systems, such as aggregated throughput and IOPS, but fail to conduct a quantitative analysis of their scalability. In this paper, we propose a measurement methodology to quantify the scalability of big data processing services, which makes the cloud services scalability comparable. We conduct a group of comparative experiments on AliCloud E-MapReduce and Baidu MRS, and collect their respective scalability characteristics under Hadoop and Spark workloads. The scalability characteristics observed in our work could help cloud users choose the best cloud service platform to set up an optimized big data processing system to achieve their specific goals more successfully. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Inspired by the recent experimental progress in noisy kicked rotor systems,we investigate the effect of temporal disorder or quasi-periodicity in one-dimensional kicked lattices with pulsed on-site *** found that,unlike the spatial disorder or quasi-periodicity which usually leads to localization,the effect of the temporal one is more complex and depends on the spatial *** the kicked on-site potential is periodic in real space,then the wave packet will stay diffusive in the presence of temporal disorder or *** the other hand,if the kicked on-site potential is spatially quasi-periodic,then the temporal disorder or quasi-periodicity may lead to a shift of the transition point of the dynamical localization and destroy the dynamical localization in a certain parameter *** results we obtained can be readily tested by experiments and may help us better understand the dynamical localization.

Multimodal unified attention networks for vision-and-language interactions

Learning an effective attention mechanism for multimodal data is important in many vision-and-language tasks that require a synergic understanding of both the visual and textual contents. Existing state-of-the-art approaches use co-attention models to associate each visual object (e.g., image region) with each textual object (e.g., query word). Despite the success of these co-attention models, they only model inter-modal interactions while neglecting intra-modal interactions. Here we propose a general 'unified attention' model that simultaneously captures the intra- and inter-modal interactions of multimodal features and outputs their corresponding attended representations. By stacking such unified attention blocks in depth, we obtain the deep Multimodal Unified Attention Network (MUAN), which can seamlessly be applied to the visual question answering (VQA) and visual grounding tasks. We evaluate our MUAN models on two VQA datasets and three visual grounding datasets, and the results show that MUAN achieves top level performance on both tasks without bells and whistles. Spring festival points the way to cleaner air in China

Human migration during the Chinese Spring Festival (SF) is the largest collective human activity of its kind in the modern era-involving about one-tenth of the world population and over six percent of the earth's land surface area. The festival results in a drop of air pollutant emissions that causes dramatic changes of atmospheric composition over China's most polluted regions. Based on satellite and in-situ measurements for the years 2005-2019 over 50 cities in eastern China, we find that the atmospheric NO2 pollution dropped by ~40% during the SF week, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) decreased by ~30% in the following week, reflecting the effectiveness of precursor emission controls on the mitigation of secondary PM2.5 formation. However, although human activity and emissions are at the lowest level, air pollution over eastern China during the SF still far exceeds that over other worldwide pollution hotspots. Our analyses suggest that measures based solely on end-of-pipe controls and industry upgrades may not suffice to meet air quality goals. Further cleaning of the air in China depends fundamentally on sustainable advances in both heavy industry upgrades and clean energy transition. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this work, we investigate the secrecy performance in multi-antenna untrusted relay networks, where destination-aided jamming is incorporated to help reduce the amount of confidential information leaked to an untrusted relay. We conduct a robust secrecy performance analysis for the worst-case scenario, where the antenna selection technique is performed at the untrusted relay for data reception and retransmission, and the selected antenna is the one with the highest probability of interrupting the confidential information. In addition, maximal ratio transmission is used at the source and destination for sending information and jamming signals. Under this transmission scheme, we derive the novel exact and asymptotic closed-form expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) to evaluate the secrecy performance with arbitrary number of antennas. Numerical and simulation results indicate that there exists an optimal number of transmit antennas at the source to achieve the tradeoff between reliability and security. © 2019 IEEE.
