Referenced the fracture mechanics theories, based on the consideration of the destruction characteristics, the cementation force of ice in the ice and fictitious crack, the wing crack fracture model of base layer of reservoir Ice Layer. The fracture toughness, is the fracture mechanics performance of ice material, which must be measured by experiment It is the experimental method of fracture mechanics used in this paper. These ice specimens on the different thickness were tested with fracture mechanics method at low-temperature testing machine, to obtain the fracture flexibility change rate of ice body which contains pre-crack and the values of under different conditions of T andṖ, which could determine fracture toughness G˜C of ice body during the ice pressure generated, It is a meaningful attempt to research the anti-frost ice layer of reservoir in seasonal permafrost regions, and provides a reference for stability design. © 2011 IEEE.

The fracture energy release rate G∼C, which is the important parameter of ice pressure calculation model that is built on energy balance method, is the fracture mechanics performance of ice material. It is related with these factors such as ice material loading rate P , which must be measured by experiment. It is the experimental method of fracture mechanics used in this paper. These ice specimens on the different thickness loading rate P were tested with fracture mechanics method at low-temperature testing machine, to obtain the fracture flexibility change rate d/da(1/M) of ice body which contains pre-crack and the values of P-δ under different conditions of P, which could determine fracture energy release rate GC of ice body during the ice pressure generated, which provide the necessary experimental data to establish ice layer pressure calculation model for the application of energy balance method. © 2011 IEEE.

Reservoir revetment on cold regions are often frost damaged resulting from the joint action of low-temperature and cryogenic environment in winter, and then reservoir revetments are often broken to decline the usage function, even to lose the function completely. In this paper, practical problems in engineering were analyzed for the drainage pumping station of Tuanjie Reservoir. Based on traditional method in analysis and calculation, fracture mechanics was brought to make quantitative analysis and calculation on the problems of anti-freeze damage from the viewpoint of fracture mechanics. So as to put forward a new idea to resolve anti-freezing of reservoir slope protection on cold regions, doing meaningful exploration. ©2010 Society for Experimental Mechanics Inc.

Advanced prediction of the geological condition of anterior rock near tunnel's work area in the hydraulic tunnel construction not only to protect the safety for the construction unit, but also can save a lot of manpower, financial and material resources. Ground Penetrating Radar, GPR for short, has been widely used for its easy operation, rapid, nondestructive, veracity, intuition and etc. In this paper, the introduction of basic working principle and the application and skills of GPR in advanced prediction of water delivery tunnel was produced. © 2011 IEEE.

The rehabilitation properties of intelligent concrete beam reinforced with shape memory alloys (SMA) is investigated. In this study, SMA strands, made of 7 single wires, are used to replace the steel bars in ordinary concrete beam. The test of single point loading at the mid-span is conducted on the beam. The experiment has three stages including loading, unloading and heating the SMA strands. During heating the SMA strands by electrical current, the crack width can be reduced by taking the advantage of the shape memory effect of SMA strands. The results illustrate that SMA is a candidate material for rehabilitation of reinforced concrete structures. © (2011) Trans Tech Publications.

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are unique class materials that have the ability to undergo large deformations, while returning to their undeformed shape through either the applications of heat (SME) or removal of stress (SE). The unique properties lead to their wide applications in the biomedical, mechanical, aerospace, commercial industries, and recently in civil engineering. The paper presents two case studies of structural seismic vibration control using SMAs. The first one is a study of the SMA reinforced RC members. Two innovative applications in RC members, such as SMA-based Precast Concrete Frame Connection (SMA-PCFC), and SMA reinforced RC short column, were proposed. Moreover, the self-rehabilitation properties of SMAs-based Intelligent Reinforced Concrete Beams (SMA-IRCBs) were further experimentally investigated. The results show that SMAs can improve the mechanical properties of concrete members. SMA reinforced RC members have unique seismic performance compared to ordinarily steel reinforced concrete members. The second one is a study of the structural energy dissipation system using SMAs damping device. An innovative hybrid SMAs friction device (HSMAFD) which consists of pre-tensioned superelastic SMA wires and friction devices (FD) was presented. The results of cyclic tensile tests show that the HSMAFD exhibits stable large energy dissipation capacity and re-centering feature. The effectiveness of the HSMAFD in reducing horizontal response of structures subjected to strong seismic excitations was verified through shaking table tests carried out on a reduced-scale symmetric steel frame model with and without the HSMAFD. © (2011) Trans Tech Publications.

Reservoir revetment in cold regions is often damaged by frost due to the joint action of low-temperatures and cryogenic environment in winter. This damage reduces or even eliminates the function ofthe reservoir revelrnent. In this paper, practical problems in engineering were analyzed for the drainage pumping station of Tuanjie Reservoir. Based on a tradifional method of analysis and calculalion, fiacture mechanics was iricorporated to provide quantitative analysis and calculation on the problem of anti-freeze damage from the viewpoint of fracture mechanics. Thus, a new idea is put forward to resolve anti-freefing ofreservoir slope proteclion in cold regions.

This paper established a failure criterion of frozen soil based on fracture mechanics considering various defects and destruction mechanism of frozen soil. The criterion fits for frozen soil under small scale yielding conditions or brittle fracture. It indicates that the failure criterion is valid by applying to the actual anti-frozen research of hydraulic structures destruction. It provides a new idea for the research on the anti-frozen damage to hydraulic structures in seasonal frozen soil area.
