In this paper, we investigate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assistant air-to-ground communication system, where multiple UAVs form a UAV-enabled virtual antenna array (UVAA) to communicate with remote base stations by utilizing collaborative beamforming. To improve the work efficiency of the UVAA, we formulate a UAV-enabled collaborative beamforming multi-objective optimization problem (UCBMOP) to simultaneously maximize the transmission rate of the UVAA and minimize the energy consumption of all UAVs by optimizing the positions and excitation current weights of all UAVs. This problem is challenging because these two optimization objectives conflict with each other, and they are non-concave to the optimization variables. Moreover, the system is dynamic, and the cooperation among UAVs is complex, making traditional methods take much time to compute the optimization solution for a single task. In addition, as the task changes, the previously obtained solution will become obsolete and invalid. To handle these issues, we leverage the multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) to address the UCBMOP. Specifically, we use the heterogeneous-agent trust region policy optimization (HATRPO) as the basic framework, and then propose an improved HATRPO algorithm, namely HATRPO-UCB, where three techniques are introduced to enhance the performance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can learn a better strategy compared with other methods. An Empirical Study on Information Extraction using Large Language Models

Human-like large language models (LLMs), especially the most powerful and popular ones in OpenAI’s GPT family, have proven to be very helpful for many natural language processing (NLP) related tasks. Therefore, various attempts have been made to apply LLMs to information extraction (IE), which is a fundamental NLP task that involves extracting information from unstructured plain text. To demonstrate the latest representative progress in LLMs’ information extraction ability, we assess the information extraction ability of GPT-4 (the latest version of GPT at the time of writing this paper) from four perspectives: Performance, Evaluation Criteria, Robustness, and Error Types. Our results suggest a visible performance gap between GPT-4 and state-of-the-art (SOTA) IE methods. To alleviate this problem, considering the LLMs’ human-like characteristics, we propose and analyze the effects of a series of simple prompt-based methods, which can be generalized to other LLMs and NLP tasks. Rich experiments show our methods’ effectiveness and some of their remaining issues in improving GPT-4’s information extraction ability. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Reinforced iterative knowledge distillation for cross-lingual named entity recognition

Named entity recognition (NER) is a fundamental component in many applications, such as Web Search and Voice Assistants. Although deep neural networks greatly improve the performance of NER, due to the requirement of large amounts of training data, deep neural networks can hardly scale out to many languages in an industry setting. To tackle this challenge, cross-lingual NER transfers knowledge from a rich-resource language to languages with low resources through pre-trained multilingual language models. Instead of using training data in target languages, cross-lingual NER has to rely on only training data in source languages, and optionally adds the translated training data derived from source languages. However, the existing cross-lingual NER methods do not make good use of rich unlabeled data in target languages, which is relatively easy to collect in industry applications. To address the opportunities and challenges, in this paper we describe our novel practice in Microsoft to leverage such large amounts of unlabeled data in target languages in real production settings. To effectively extract weak supervision signals from the unlabeled data, we develop a novel approach based on the ideas of semi-supervised learning and reinforcement learning. The empirical study on three benchmark data sets verifies that our approach establishes the new state-of-the-art performance with clear edges. Now, the NER techniques reported in this paper are on their way to become a fundamental component for Web ranking, Entity Pane, Answers Triggering, and Question Answering in the Microsoft Bing search engine. Moreover, our techniques will also serve as part of the Spoken Language Understanding module for a commercial voice assistant. In this paper, we investigate a transmission eigenvalue problem that couples the principles of acoustics and elasticity. This problem naturally arises when studying fluid-solid interactions and constructing bubbly-elastic structures to create metamaterials. We uncover intriguing local geometric structures of the transmission eigenfunctions near the corners of the domains, under typical regularity conditions. As applications, we present novel unique identifiability and visibility results for an inverse problem associated with an acoustoelastic system, which hold practical significance. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

The use of deep learning for fault diagnosis is already a commonly used method. However, complex operating conditions under different working conditions significantly impact bearing vibration signals. Integrating the discriminative information of fault type and size into the deep learning model to achieve rich multi-task fault feature diagnosis still deserves attention. This study proposes a deep multi-task-based multi-scale feature fusion network MEAT(multi-task-based deep multi-scale feature fusion network) model to address these issues. Solve the limitations and poor adaptability of traditional convolutional neural network models under complex work. This model considers two sub-tasks, fault scale discrimination, and fault type discrimination, in the fault diagnosis multi-classification task through multi-task mapping decomposition. First, multi-dimensional features are extracted by convolution at different scales to obtain multi-dimensional fault information at different levels. Then these features are weighted and fused using a multi-layer attention mechanism to get accurate diagnosis results of bearing faults. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper is concerned with the unique identification of the shape of a scatterer through a single far-field pattern in an inverse elastic medium scattering problem with a generalized transmission boundary condition. The uniqueness issue by a single far-field measurement is a challenging problem in inverse scattering theory, which has a long and colorful history. In this paper, we demonstrate the well-posedness of the direct problem by the variational approach. We establish the uniqueness results by a single far-field measurement under a generic scenario when dealing with underlying elastic scatterers exhibiting polygonal-nest or polygonal-cell structures. Furthermore, for a polygonal-nest or polygonal-cell structure scatterer associated with density and boundary impedance parameters as piecewise constants, we show that these physical quantities can be uniquely determined simultaneously by a single far-field measurement. Ontology revision aims to seamlessly incorporate a new ontology into an existing ontology and plays a crucial role in tasks such as ontology evolution, ontology maintenance, and ontology alignment. Similar to repair single ontologies, resolving logical incoherence in the task of ontology revision is also important and meaningful, because incoherence is a main potential factor to cause inconsistency and reasoning with an inconsistent ontology will obtain meaningless answers. To deal with this problem, various ontology revision approaches have been proposed to define revision operators and design ranking strategies for axioms in an ontology. However, they rarely consider axiom semantics which provides important information to differentiate axioms. In addition, pre-trained models can be utilized to encode axiom semantics, and have been widely applied in many natural language processing tasks and ontology-related ones in recent years. Therefore, in this paper, we study how to apply pre-trained models to revise ontologies. We first define four scoring functions to rank axioms based on a pre-trained model by considering various information from an ontology. Based on the functions, an ontology revision algorithm is then proposed to deal with unsatisfiable concepts at once. To improve efficiency, an adapted revision algorithm is designed to deal with unsatisfiable concepts group by group. We conduct experiments over 19 ontology pairs and compare our algorithms and scoring functions with existing ones. According to the experiments, our algorithms could achieve promising performance. The adapted revision algorithm could improve the efficiency largely, and at most about 90% of the time could be saved for some ontology pairs. Some of our scoring functions like reliableOnt cos could help a revision algorithm obtain better results in many cases, especially for those challenging ontology pairs like OM8. The prediction of urban traffic congestion has always been one of the important contents in the research of intelligent transportation systems. The difficulty in predicting urban traffic congestion is that urban traffic operation is essentially a collection of spatial activity planning for residents under certain conditions. The huge group of residents themselves has great complexity and uncertainty. Traditional neural networks mostly focus on road characteristic data and road condition data, and lack of in-depth exploration of the fundamental factors of traffic congestion for residents' travel. So we propose a traffic congestion prediction model based on the analysis of residents' spatial activities. Starting from the residents' activities, the simulation of urban traffic operation conditions can more realistically reflect the traffic congestion situation of the city at specific times and roads, and quickly generate model results. The experimental results show that the model analyzed by residents' spatial activities runs fast and has high prediction accuracy. The results are in line with the actual situation and have strong practical value.

A Coarse-to-fine Cascaded Evidence-Distillation Neural Network for Explainable Fake News Detection

Existing fake news detection methods aim to classify a piece of news as true or false and provide veracity explanations, achieving remarkable performances. However, they often tailor automated solutions on manual fact-checked reports, suffering from limited news coverage and debunking delays. When a piece of news has not yet been fact-checked or debunked, certain amounts of relevant raw reports are usually disseminated on various media outlets, containing the wisdom of crowds to verify the news claim and explain its verdict. In this paper, we propose a novel Coarse-to-fine Cascaded Evidence-Distillation (CofCED) neural network for explainable fake news detection based on such raw reports, alleviating the dependency on fact-checked ones. Specifically, we first utilize a hierarchical encoder for web text representation, and then develop two cascaded selectors to select the most explainable sentences for verdicts on top of the selected top-K reports in a coarse-to-fine manner. Besides, we construct two explainable fake news datasets, which are publicly available. Experimental results demonstrate that our model significantly outperforms state-of-the-art baselines and generates high-quality explanations from diverse evaluation perspectives. Sample efficient imitation learning via reward function trained in advance

Imitation learning (IL) is a framework that learns to imitate expert behavior from demonstrations. Recently, IL shows promising results on high dimensional and control tasks. However, IL typically suffers from sample inefficiency in terms of environment interaction, which severely limits their application to simulated domains. In industrial applications, learner usually have a high interaction cost, the more interactions with environment, the more damage it causes to the environment and the learner itself. In this article, we make an effort to improve sample efficiency by introducing a novel scheme of inverse reinforcement learning. Our method, which we call Model Reward Function Based Imitation Learning (MRFIL), uses an ensemble dynamic model as a reward function, what is trained with expert demonstrations. The key idea is to provide the agent with an incentive to match the demonstrations over a long horizon, by providing a positive reward upon encountering states in line with the expert demonstration distribution. In addition, we demonstrate the convergence guarantee for new objective function. Experimental results show that our algorithm reaches the competitive performance and significantly reducing the environment interactions compared to IL methods. Copyright © 2021, The Authors.
